Introducing the newest member of my Furby family, Dis-Co-Dazz the DJ Furblet! I've been so excited for these little guys to be released, I was waiting until Walmart had them but I just couldn't wait anymore and bought one on Amazon! I think it's soooo pretty and a lot of fun! I love how stretching and retracting it changes the speed of the music.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fun fact, this is actually the second Dis-Co-Dazz I ordered! The first one didn't work, likely making me the first person to ever receive a broken DJ Furblet haha. But it's all good because I got a refund and a new working one!

New Organization System!
Hello everyone! I'm here with an idea that I totally copied from @furbytech!
Each Furby that I repair will be given a serial number to identify it by. I will be keeping a personal log of each of these Furbys with pictures and descriptions of issues they had and how I fixed them. This will help me keep track of what I did to each Furby in case something is wrong with it or I need to reference it to fix a different Furby. It will also tell a bit about the Furby, which will be helpful to visualize which Furby it is when it's disassembled. I will also be putting the Furby's serial number in the tags of any post that mentions them. This way, I (or anyone else who's interested) can search for all posts about a certain Furby to find resources easier.
Here is an example of how my serial numbers will work:
Tumblr media
This is Norman, the first 1998 Furby I restored and the second Furby I restored. His serial number is F98002JT.
This is what the number means:
F: Stands for Furby, to indicate an adult furby. Babies will be given a B instead. I'm considering Furby Party Rockers, Furblings, and Furblets as babies as well if I ever have to fix any of those.
98: Indicates a Furby from the original 1998 generation. 2005 Furbys will be given 05, 2012 Furbys will be given 12, Furby Booms will be given 13, Furby Connects will be given 16, and 2023 Furbys will be given 23. And I suppose a DJ Furby would be given a 25, but I hope I don't have to fix any of those for a while, haha!
002: Norman was the second Furby I ever restored, so he gets the number 002. This is useful for identification, and just kind of fun to count how many Furbys I repair.
JT: This is the factory Norman came from (each 1998 Furby has 2 letters to indicate which factory made it). This is really only useful for 1998 Furbys, so for later generations I may just leave this part out, or since JT/Jetta manufactures all Furbys from later generations (I think, correct me if I'm wrong), I could just put JT.
Thanks for reading all that and hopefully you all like the idea! I just want my blog to be a bit more organized and easy to reference.
Here is the post that inspired me!
Also, not copied from anyone, I will be using a couple other tags to organize as well! Any post about repairing Furbys will be tagged "furby repair", any post showing off a new Furby I got will be tagged "new furby" and any post showing off a finished restoration will be tagged "finished restoration". I think that will make it so that anyone can easily search for a certain kind of post!

Introducing my next project! This is a Furby I've been very excited to restore! It's just so filthy. It's a JT Dragon I bought on eBay purely because it's just so gross I need to help it. It does work, but the battery compartment is a little corroded, it's mute, and the tummy sensor doesn't seem to work (although it's kind of hard to tell since it doesn't talk). It needs a bath ASAP!!

The Tie-Dye Furby is finished being restored! The before pictures are on top and the after pictures are on bottom.
I'm very happy with how it turned out! This was only my second 1998 restoration, and I think it turned out a lot better than my first. I'm learning better techniques and skills as I go!
I bought this furby at a toy collector's fair. When I bought it, it was dirty, had a yellowed faceplate, bent eyelashes, battery corrosion, and didn't turn on.
Things I did to this Furby: - Skinned - Washed skin using water and Woolite Delicates, using a toothbrush to scrub out any stains - Brushed fur with a pet brush to make it fluffy - Retrobrighted faceplate using 40v hair developer and UV lights - Bent eyelashes into a better shape by heating them with hot water and bending them with my fingers (I know I said I would replace them, but I figured that they weren't bent enough for it to be worth the trouble of completely replacing them) - Cleaned out battery corrosion with white vinegar on a toothbrush - Jumpstarted by spinning the gear - Cleaned gears with isopropyl alcohol - Re-lubricated gears with 3-in-1 silicone oil
The Furby works great now! I bought it from a very nice man who was very excited and happy that I would be able to fix it up to its original glory. I planned to bring it to the next time they have the fair to show him how happy his Furby is now, but unfortunately he passed away a few months ago. I like to think he'd be happy with my work though.
(Also sorry about the lighting differences in the before and after photos, the before photos were taken before I bought my larger Furby shelf that blocks out my window, so I don't have any natural light anymore lmao. So all photos from now on will have the lighting like in the after photos.)

The Tie-Dye Furby is finally ready to be re-skinned! The last step was to clean the gears. The 20-year-old grease was making them sticky, which made the motor struggle, causing it to completely stop moving when the Furby would try to lean forward. I used 91% isopropyl alcohol on a paintbrush to clean the gears, and then dropped 3-in-1 silicone oil on them to re-lubricate them. It fixed the issue and the gears sound so much better now!
Here's a video of it getting stuck:

The Retrobrighting was a success! The Tie-dye's faceplate is back to its original color. It was a fun experiment, and I learned some new things in the process! Next time, I'll save the skin washing until after I Retrobright, since I have to wash the hydrogen peroxide off and if I can wash the skin just once instead of twice I'd rather do that. Next up, fixing the eyelashes! This furby is almost all fixed up!
Here is the tutorial I used: https://www.tumblr.com/furbyfab/179013244003/alright-back-at-it-again-at-krispy-kreme-home?source=share

Time to (hopefully) fix the yellowed plastic on the Tie-dye's faceplate. I've never tried to Retrobright anything before, so this is kind of an experiment. I used a paintbrush to paint Super Star 40 volume cream peroxide developer onto the plastic, and put the skin into a box I lined with aluminum foil and UV light strips. We'll see how it goes!

This is my newest Furby acquisition, Tay-Toh! I found him at a flea market for $8, and he works perfectly! My 2 childhood Booms are now broken, so it was really fun to get to use the app to play with one again!

The Tie-Dye Furby has been skinned and washed! It's so much softer and fluffier now! I had to jumpstart it, it took a lot of spinning the gear but it finally started up. The gears don't sound great and the light sensor doesn't seem to pick up light unless it's super bright light in a completely dark room, I'll see what I can do to fix those. Next I'll clean out the battery corrosion I somehow didn't notice before, and then probably give it some nice new eyelashes since these ones are pretty bent up!

Introducing my new victim project! I got this JT Tie-Dye 1998 Furby at a collector fair a while back and I'm finally getting around to fixing it up! It's a little dirty, the eyelashes are really bent, the faceplate is slightly yellowed, and it doesn't work. Hopefully it's just in need of a makeover and a jumpstart, we'll see!
