H. C. Anderson’s The Little Mermaid is about his unrequited love, Edvard Collin. Anderson wrote the tale after Collin married a woman and subsequently broke his heart. The protagonist, a nameless mermaid, pursues a human prince and sacrifices much of herself to be with him. Despite giving up her voice, ridding herself of her tail, and being condemned to agony with each step she takes, he chooses another woman. The mermaid then dissolves into sea foam in her despair. The silencing of the nameless mermaid, her transformation into an acceptable form, her eternal pain, her eventual death...all is a reflection of Anderson’s own struggles, a cry of queer loneliness in a heterosexual world.
