Halloween/Autumn Movies To Watch List!
I love Halloween for many reasons, but the biggest reason is that it inspires a sense of cozy nostalgia in me. The months of October, November, and December are my favorite months of the year because they make me want nothing more than to stay home, throw on comfy pjs, light a couple of candles, turn on my string lights, and watch movies.
It’s still a little warm in Queens, NY so, to get in the spirit, I thought it’d be fun to share my favorite Halloween movies! As soon as the chilly weather hits, here’s what I’ll be spending my free time watching…
Tumblr media
Hocus Pocus - the gold standard, really. I loved this movie as a kid, and I still love it now. As the sometimes annoying little sister to a teenaged big brother, I related to Dani and loved the brother-sister themes in the movie. A couple of years ago, my brother was dating a girl who asked him to watch the movie with her, and afterwards he texted me to say the characters reminded him of us when we were kids. That meant so much to me. This movie makes me feel happy and nostalgic and it always makes me laugh.
Tumblr media
Practical Magic - Do all little girls go through a witch phase? All the girls I went to school with certainly did, and I was no exception. When I was a kid, Sabrina the Teenage Witch premiered, and then a little later in my childhood Charmed popped up on tv. My childhood bff Kathy and I used to stand in the schoolyard during lunch and try to figure out how we would know if we were witches, and what our powers would be. My love of witchy things never really went away, and I love movies that feature witches, be they good or bad. I listened to the audiobook version of Practical Magic this year and it was so great, and makes me more excited than ever to rewatch the movie this year. Between the Stevie Nicks and Joni Mitchell dotted sountrack and the female/sisterly friendships that dominate the film, this has become one of my favorite October movies for when I want to feel cozy and romantic.
Tumblr media
When Harry Met Sally - There are actually only a couple of autumnal scenes in this movie, but goodness, do they stick out in my memory. I love that the fashion in this film has sort of come full circle and most of Meg Ryan’s wardrobe in the film would look right at home on NYC streets again. As an NYC native, I sometimes get frustrated at the harmful stereotypes or unrealistic expectations that transplants to the city seem to believe, but one thing is true: NYC is at its best in the autumn. New York is meant to be walked through, and there’s no better feeling than strolling through some tree-lined city street or park with someone you like, wearing a blazer, maybe carrying a cup of coffee… it’s during those moments that I feel most grateful to call NYC my home. And if you’ve ever visited the Temple of Dendur at the Met during the fall, like Harry and Sally do in the film, you know how magical it can be.
Tumblr media
Casper - I think one of my first crushes was Devon Sawa as the human form of Casper at the end of this movie. I was 8 years old when this came out and I absolutely loved it. For some reason it was one of the movies that my school used to show in the auditorium on really snowy or rainy days when attendance was way down (did all schools do that?) and I remember always swooning a little bit when they’re dancing and Casper repeats his question to Cat: “Can I keep you?” I actually sort of forgot about this movie for a few years, and then watched it again last year and loved the very 90s fashion and sweet, sad tone of the film. Now it’s becoming part of my annual rotation!
Tumblr media
Addams Family Values - Speaking of early crushes. Sometimes being bisexual means encountering something from your childhood for the first time as an adult and going “OH, right” as you recognize that the reason you were obsessed with a character in a movie or tv show is that you totally had a big lesbian crush on them, but our dumb heteronormative society doesn’t let you know that that is a possibility so you just think you find the character “funny” or “cool.” But between Joan Cusak and Christina Ricci, this film is basically my root. This movie holds up pretty well, except for the Thanksgiving at camp scene- while it’s still funny in parts, it’s also kind of unsettling to watch a bunch of white kids pretend to be Native Americans! Ah, the 90s. Everyone thought they were so damn progressive and they were so often wrong.
Tumblr media
Beetlejuice - My poor parents. I was always asking them to let me watch movies that I was not actually mature enough to handle yet! I still am not a fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas (unpopular opinion, I know!) largely because I was so freaked out by it as a child that it ruined the whole experience for me. Beetlejuice, luckily, didn’t quite fall into this category. I swore up and down that I wanted to watch the movie after seeing a commercial for it, and my parents had the good sense to watch it with me and to turn it off once it started getting creepy and inappropriate. I watched it properly for the first time when I was about 13, which was exactly the right age for this movie. Now as an adult I still find new things to laugh about- the horrible artwork and tastes of Lydia’s stepmom, the bureaucracy of the afterlife- but I also happily associate it with a happy viewing experience as a preteen and not a potentially scarring one as a much younger kid.
Tumblr media
The Craft - I think this is it, guys. I think this is the year I show my husband The Craft, one of my favorite teen horror movies. He’s never seen it, and I think he’d love the campy 90s drama of this teen witch movie. This was another important formative witch-obsession building block experience, and my friends and I absolutely tried out “light as a feather, stiff as a board” at our slumber parties after seeing this. I do love a good metaphorical journey through the horror of being a teenage girl.
Tumblr media
Ghostbusters - One of my favorite films of all time, delightful to watch at any time of year, but especially fun to enjoy during the Halloween season.
Tumblr media
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - I mean, all of the Harry Potter films are appropriate for basically any major international holiday, but especially Halloween and Christmas, right? But this one is certainly the most Halloween appropriate (despite the strong competition of the slow close up of the floating candles and Jack-O-Lanterns in the first film, and the chilly, dark-foresty vibe of Deathly Hallows part I). Alfonso Cuaron knows how to set a mood, and the entire film feels like it somehow all takes place in mid autumn.
Tumblr media
Crimson Peak - I think this is the most recent film on my list!  It is moody, gothic, a little frightening, fairly disgusting, kind of beautiful, and features some incredible performances, including some incredibly memorable, bonkers scenery chewing by Jessica Chastain.
Tumblr media
An American Werewolf in London - I don’t know what I was expecting when I first decided to watch this film a few years ago, but it wasn’t what I got. What I got was snarky, funny, weirdly sweet, and maybe secretly about Nazis? It’s quickly become one of my favorite films.
Tumblr media
Jennifer’s Body - “Hell is a teenage girl.” There is a whole subgenre of horror films which are metaphorical depictions of the ways in which high school, puberty, and your teenage years can be a nightmare, and those are (clearly, based on this list!) some of the best horror movies, in my opinion. This film is criminally underrated. I think it got some bad reviews in part because film reviewers tend to be older men- they were never going to really get or enjoy a film that revolves around teenage girls. Megan Fox has also gotten a bad reputation through no real fault of her own- between this film and her stint on New Girl, I actually think she might secretly be one of the best comedic actresses of our time. Anyway, this movie is practically perfect in my eyes, and I love that I’ve been able to see it screened twice in the last couple of years because people are beginning to take a second look at films that were dismissed at least in part due to sexism. I know a lot of people still don’t like this film, and that’s fine! But I think it deserves tons of credit for being a) a clever and original film and b) hella queer.
Tumblr media
Ginger Snaps - Without An American Werewolf in London, there would be no Ginger Snaps, and without Ginger Snaps, there would be no Jennifer’s Body. These three films would make for a perfect triple feature- and one lazy Sunday this October, I think I’ll go ahead and make that happen for myself.

This is so true, I feel like everyone who experience or saw something like this, know exactly how well done is this chapter. Is overwhelming, sad, I even felt anger. I wish I could be strong as Persephone is, I wish everyone could be that strong
Tumblr media
Love how this was portrayed. I love the fact that we have one of the love gods teaching Persephone about love, consent ,and trauma. I love how this can be read by other survivors of abuse. No partner (or in this case, anyone who claims to be a partner) should ever abuse you. Abuse does not come from love, nor should you stay with someone who abuses you because of love.
Props to the artist, did an amazing job with the portrayal of the reveal.
