Reflection 15th May
1) Describe what has been completed in the week, lectures, studio session, workshops research and out of hours things?
Monday- photoshoot mama, editing old photos of grandparents, finally got the right image edited photo for painting
Tuesday- started painting of mama, tutorial with Dominic, finished mama painting
Wednesday- reworked papa painting to fit in with others
Thursday- tried working on big blue painting
Friday- working on big blue painting again, not happy with, reflecting on paintings and decided on which to include in the exhibition.
2) What have I learned from the week? what has been achieved/ completed and has it been successful?
I’ve got everything I need to do done now is just tying up and other submission requirements. It’s weird seeing everyone else submit. I just hope that I’ve got enough and that leaving out so many paintings isn’t a big mistake. But the paintings I do have feel strong as a group. Now the important part is showcasing them well> i know the titles I want are portrait 1, portrait 2 etc. but is white wall really the perfect place? and what sort of formation?
3) How will this reflection influence my actions later? What’s the plan now? How will I take forward my successes to develop the work and improve?
about 5/6 days till I need to submit.
I have so much to do in such little time. AAA. Exhibtion mock up, 20 pages, and critical evaluation 1000 words. I think I can do it I just need to FOCUS. tutorial on tuesday with Dominic so get as much done as possible.

so theses are all the paintings I’ve completed over this project. Here you can see the ones that didn’t make the cut for my final exhibition. The checkered one was too busy and confusing, the hands animated the painting more but then the viewers were distracted and it became less about the nature of how it is painted and the character but trying to figure out the narrative. The small yellow one had a blue face which made it too alien, also it originated from a digital photo so I felt it would not make sense to include it as this is about an anologue- digital - analogue transformation. The black and orange one didn’t make the cut because the pose made the painting seem threatening, and I just felt the style didn’t align. The big blue one, well that didn’t make the cut because it’s ugly and too simple and it would be weird to have 2 self portraits in the final collection.

thursday+ friday
working on this painting again. I forgot to take a lot of progress shots. Anyway I had planned to add in more black to link with other paintings but I don’t know, I think I just ruined this painting… I’ve decided I’m just not going to include it because I’ve spent a lot of time working on this painting and it’s getting close to the deadline and I still need to start my critical evaluation and 20 pages and exhibition mock up. It also doesn’t flow with other works, there’s something about the face being too basic, it looks quite overworked, and maybe it would be odd to have two self portraits of myself amongst everyone else? I think it’s best to leave it out and let my other works stand for themselves as they are a lot stronger and united.
I checked and it looked better with the other paintings before I made any changes to it… but it still didn’t fit in completely anyway. I’m glad to just leave this painting behind. Sorry mama.

i had to reblog from a new account I made because apparently I’ve reached the max number of posts?
tuesday
feeling good about this painting of mama as it fits in well with my other established painting of mama, the technique I used of making the initial polaroid black and white first and then adding similar colours I’d already used in previous paintings really worked.

tuesday tutorial
Dominic agrees painting of papa doesn’t quite fit in with others, maybe I could hang it separately or I can change to fit in with others, but it’s up to me as I am the one who knows and I should follow my intuition as an artist. Mama one is good, maybe a bit simple.
he asked about the other blue self portrait I was doing but I said I’d left it for now, he said oh that’s a shame I liked it but also I should follow my gut because it’s my paintings and I feel that is the right decision then I should stick by it.
