Il y a 10 ans, le dimanche 11 janvier 2015, suite à l'attaque terroriste contre Charlie Hebdo du 7 janvier 2015, une immense marche, historique, plus grande mobilisation jamais enregistrée dans le pays, qui rassemblera 1,5 million de personnes à Paris et 4 millions dans toute la France, est organisée en hommage aux victimes des attaques, contre le terrorisme, pour la liberté d’expression.

Jean-Marie Lepen a paradoxalement fini par passer l’arme à gauche. Cracher ou danser sur sa tombe fait débat, il y a pourtant longtemps que le menhir d’extrême droite n’était plus qu’un point de détail de l’histoire actuelle du renouveau fasciste. Ses idées restent et se répandent, plus populaires aujourd’hui que de son vivant, Bardella fait Führer sur Tiktok, Marine porte son nom plus haut que jamais.

Entre 2000 et 2015, je suis allé photographier les rassemblements du Front National du 1er Mai à Paris. Cette série de portraits s’appelait "Visages du Front", parce qu’à l’époque le FN faisait un petit score inquiétant mais que personne n’osait revendiquer ce vote. Progressivement une fierté mal placée a remplacé la honte.

Il y a 10 ans, le 7 Janvier 2015, massacre à Charlie Hebdo. L’incroyable nouvelle tourne en boucle toute la journée. Le soir même, une réunion spontanée sur la Place de la République, j’y vais sans réfléchir, j’imagine que nous serons quelques centaines. Mais la place se remplit très vite et finit par déborder, il y a des milliers de personnes dans toutes les rues affluentes. Au début, c’est le silence qui est impressionnant, tout le monde chuchote ou se tait, le choc est terrible et il n’y a pas de mots. Juste un, qui monte parfois comme un murmure dans la foule, Charlie.

It was the end of the day, harvesters were only women, more than a douzain, but a man came with a truck to load all the bags. He was weighing every bag and the salary of the workers depended on it. 

I had been around making photos for some time, observing silently, until one of the women pointed at me and her bag saying something like, help me instead of taking pictures. I said ok, no problem, and pretended I could not lift the bag to make them all laugh and they did. But I’m almost sure I could never have lifted it, put it on my head and walked down this brutal slope.
