I think that the reason that it works when Sydney calls Carmen on his shit versus the rest of his family is that Sydney doesn’t make him stew in it. She’s (usually, not always) straightforward about what she wants or needs and then she moves on. She’s not guilt tripping him, it’s, “I’m not your fucking babysitter.” “Chef.” “Great, thank you,” and she moves on with her day.

It’s the way she just snatches him by the scruff, tells him to act right, and if it requires a lengthier conversation than that she lets him come to her.
