Logan Sargeant: What Went Wrong? Part 2

{Reminder that this is a multi-part series 馃挋}
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FIA Formula 3 Championship ~ 2019
Logan would return to Carlin to contest the 2019 FIA Formula 3 Championship, joining Teppi Natori & Felipe Drugovich at the team. Logan would score point on four different occasions, his top finishes being eighth place at Circuit Paul Richard & the Hungaroring. Logan would end the season 19th in the championship with five points; Drugovich & Natori scored eight & one points.
At the end of 2019, Logan had competed in the Macau Grand Prix. He placed 10th in qualifying, placing above his teammates Felipe Drugovich & Dan Ticktum. During quali, Logan was in an opening-lap crash with Arjun Maini that resulted in taking out Arjun Maini, Jake Hughes & Enaam Ahmed, Logan ended up avoiding damage & actually finished sixth in quali. Logan would finish the race on the podium in third, behind J眉ri Vips & race winner Richard Verschoor.
2020
For the 2020 season, Logan switched teams, moving to Prema Racing, partnering with Frederik Vesti & Oscar Piastri. He amassed two podium finishes at the Red Bull Ring & another podium from pole position in the first Silverstone feature race. He scored his first FIA F3 victory at the second race at Silverstone, which ended up promoting him to the lead in the championship. He took a third pole at Barcelona & finished third in the main race, keeping the championship after round six out of nine.
Logan's next win would be at Spa-Francorchamps, where he won the sprint race & had a point advantage of his teammate Oscar. But, he would end his point scoring streak with collisions with Cl茅ment Novalak & his teammate Vesti at Monza Circuit resulted in Logan getting no points and a grid penalty in the ninth round. Finishing sixth place in the Mugello feature race left him tied with Oscar Piastri on 160 points going into the final race, but contact with Lirim Zendeli on the opening lap eliminated him from contention as Oscar went on to claim the title. Championship contender Th茅o Pourchaire finished on the podium, leaving Logan third in the standing, one point behind Th茅o Pouchaire & four points behind Oscar Piastri.
2021
In February 2021, Logan ruled out a move to the FIA Formula 2 Championship despite performing a test with Campos Racing, giving financial reasons & revealed his interest in pursuing options in sports car racing or Indy Lights. In April, Logan took part of pre-season testing for the F3 team Charouz Racing System, who had finished last in the Teams' Championship the year before. After this an announcement of Logan's return to the championship for 2021 with Charouz came shortly before the first race of the season.
Logan Sargeant: What Went Wrong? Part 1
{Another multi-part series }
Today, let's talk about Logan Sargeant. The only American driver on the grid right now. Possibly the most disappointing performance for a driver in a while. So, what happened?
Logan Hunter Sargeant, born Decemeber 31, 2000, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Mallika Sarabhai & Daniel Sargeant. He has one older brother Dalton Sargeant.
Karting
Logan began his motorsport career in karting in 2008. In his first year of karting, Logan had competed in the Rotax Micro Max class in the regional & national championships. He finished third in the Florida Winter Tour & the Rotax Max Challenge USA. In 2012, Logan & his family would move to Europe, where he would go on to compete in the ROK Cup International Final, the Trofeo Delle Industrie & the WSK Euro Series, where he competed in the OK class.
Formula 4
In the winter of 2016-2017, Sargeant made his Formula 4 debut in the Formula 4 UAE Championship with Team Motopark. While he didn't win, he was on the podium in 15 of the 18 official races & finished second in the standings behind his teammate Jonathan Aberdein. In 2017, Logan joined the racing team Carlin to compete in the F4 British Championship. He had amassed 10 podium finishes in 30 races, with two race wins at Rockingham & Silverstone, even finishing third in standings behind Oscar Piastri & his teammate & champion Jamie Caroline.
Formula Renault Eurocup
In 2018, Logan made a full-time switch to the Formula Renault Eurocup with R-ace GP. He won the season-opening race at Circuit Paul Ricard & he would later add victories at the N眉rburgring & the season finale at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. With 218 points, Logan finished fourth in the championship behind Yifei Ye, Christian Lundgaard & his teammate & champion Max Fewtrell, yet he finished ahead of his teammates Victor Martin & Charles Milesi. Logan was the second-highest placed rookie that season, behind Christian Lundgaard.
Brocedes: What is it? Part 5
2016
So in 2015, Nico was so close to winning & I assume, Lewis pulling the move he did & him getting P1 & winning the championship was just the last straw for him. So he decided it was all or nothing. According to Nico himself this was when him & Lewis stopped talking completely, as well as when Nico stopped sleeping in the same bed as his wife, stopped taking care of his kids, & instead opted to spend every moment trying to get into Lewis' head. Therefore the both of them throwing away 15+ years of friendship.
Nico won the last couple races of 2015 & the first four races of 2016, Lewis was having car troubles which gave Nico a good lead on him in the championship.
The Spanish GP, Nico made a switch error on the formation lap which causes the car to go into the wrong engine mode, which makes his car run a lot slower than Lewis' car, who is fighting for P1. Nico closes the gap between him & Lewis, Lewis lost control on the grass & spins into Nico & takes the both of them out of the race. Niki Lauda, contrary to last time, says this crash was Lewis' fault.
Niki Lauda:
"Lewis is too aggressive. It is stupid, we could've won this race"
Austrian GP, Nico had been struggling with a brake issue all race, but was still well on his way to win the race, But on the last lap Lewis caught up & overtook him.
As Nico has done in the past, he doesn't back down & him & Lewis end up colliding. Lewis ended up taking P1 & Nico took P4. The two both blamed each other & Toto Wolff threatens the two with team orders in the future.
The stewards blame Nico for this collison, giving him two penalty points, claiming Nico failed to leave "racing room" & causing a collision.
Abu Dhabi GP, in the final laps of the race Lewis ignored team orders from his race engineer & the technical director.
He purposefully slowed down & backed Nico into the pack hoping they would overtake him & that there would be enough of a points difference between the two to win the title.
Nico finishes second & won the title by five points.
Then comes Nico's surprise retirement announcement.
Lewis' response:
"This is the first time he's won in 18 years, hence why it was not a surprise that he decided to stop."
"But he's also got a family to focus on and probably wants to have more children, Formula One takes up so much of your time."
"In terms of missing the rivalry, of course because we started karting when we were 13 and we would always talk about being champions. When I join this team, Nico was there which was something we spoke about when we were kids. So, it's going to be very, very strange, and, for sure, it will be sad to not have him in the team next year."
This was the last we heard of the brocedes rivalry. As of late the two have seen each other at other races, Nico even interviewing Lewis at the 2024 Hungarian GP
{Hi guys! This is the end of this series, let me know what you guys would like to hear me write about in the submit box.}
Brocedes: What is it? Part 4
{Just a note that this is a multi-part series 馃挍}
Read Part 1 here, read Part 2 here & Part 3 here
Picking back up in 2014
Hungarian GP, Lewis has an engine failure in qualifying, so he will be starting from the pit lane for the race, during the race Lewis does well to make up positions that he lost, then a safety car comes around which puts Lewis in front of Nico but on a different strategy than what Mercedes intended.
Nico asks his race engineer to get Lewis to give him the position back because he needs to pit again before the race end, which will eventually give Nico back P1, Lewis says no, because he started from last and Nico started on pole, basically saying why should I slow down for the guy who is going to be world champion, because I want to be world champion.
Mercedes heavily implied at the time that Lewis' blocking majorly messed up Nico's whole race, but Niki Lauda comes to Lewis' defense, so Mercedes doesn't "punish" Lewis (even though Lewis explicitly denied team orders/refused to be a team player)
It is speculated that after this race, since it was the last race before the summer break, Nico was seething for the next four weeks, but we don't know if that is actually what happened. Just speculation.
Belgian GP, the messiest thing Nico had ever done to Lewis to date. On the second lap of the race, Nico attempts a risky & clumsy move, which results in him making contact with Lewis, giving Lewis' car a puncture wound & knocking him out of the race.
Looking past the controversy that clouds this situation, the facts are that, Nico crashed into Lewis intentionally & didn't back out of the corner to "prove a point". Nico finished P2, but was punished by Mercedes, forced to apologize & he was even booed off the podium.
2014 Abu Dhabi, Lewis wins & becomes world champion, Nico finishes P14, Nico congratulates Lewis, that's the end of 2014 for the two now rivals.
2015
Chinese GP, it's a Mercedes one-two, Lewis is one, Nico is two, but Nico is claiming that Lewis kept backing him up into Sebastian, Nico even going as far as to say that Lewis was trying to compromise his race.
Lewis on the other hand says this:
"It is not my job to look after Nico's race, it's my job to manage the car and bring the car home as healthy and as fast as possible. That's what I did."
U.S. GP, Lewis is trying to take the championship early, so he makes a move that aggressively forces Nico wide at turn 1, which lets Lewis take the lead, where he then is fighting off Redbull & Nico, with Nico eventually leading near the closing laps, but he makes a mistake & turns wide, leaving enough room for Lewis to pass him & claim P1.
Nico finishes P2, not only knocking him out of winning the race, but also knocking him out of the championship. Nico's fuming and calls the move Lewis made in the beginning
"one step too far"
We have now reached the infamous hat throw, where Lewis throws Nico his P2 hat & Nico chucks it back at Lewis.
Brocedes: What is it? Part 3
{Just a note that this will be a multi-part series 馃挍}
Read part 1 here & part 2 here
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2006-2008
In 2006 Nico joins F1, signing with Williams & in 2007 Lewis joins F1 with McLaren. Which was a big season for Lewis because he nearly won his rookie season but he missed out by one point to Fernando Alonso but during his second season he won the championship again by one point.
2008 Australia is big for the both of them because Nico gets his first podium & Lewis wins the GP, which gave us the lovely clip below of the two of them celebrating each others wins.
2013
This is brocedes reunited!
Nico:
"every other day there are moments or things that pop up and I can smirk and think, 'that's exactly the same as it was 15 years ago' "
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2014
At the Bahrain GP Nico & Lewis were fighting for the win & had a collision which sparked a "fight" which I put that way because it was a fake fight, it wasn't real, but they were having a "fight" in parc ferme after the race. But it turns out Nico won the race due to his advantage with an engine mode that gave him a power advantage, which would upset Lewis.
At the Spanish GP, this is now Lewis' fourth win in a row & he has the lead in the championship, Lewis & Nico were fighting till the last lap & Lewis gets across the finish line 0.6 seconds ahead of Nico, who had reportedly said he could have passed Lewis if there was another lap.
It was said Lewis used the same engine mode that Nico used at the Bahrain GP.
Monaco GP is peak pettiness. Nico & Lewis are both on an outlap, Nico is ahead or Lewis, Nico is on provisional pole & Lewis is not far behind. When out of nowhere Nico just stops his car. He claims he made a mistake but there was no crash, no lock up, nothing that could have marked a mistake, and no issues reported by the team with the car, Nico just rolls to a stop on a slip road. Which then causes yellow flags to be waved & therefore forcing Lewis to abort his lap that was in makings of a pole.
Stewards from this GP say that Nico's move was okay & not intentional, but Lewis on the other hand, was convinced that Nico's actions were completely intentional, even claiming that Mercedes had the data to prove it, but said proof was never revealed.
After this comes the interview where Lewis says to the world, that him & Nico are no longer friends.
Nico goes on to win this race, which also ends Lewis' four win streak & puts Nico in the lead for the championship.
Brocedes: What is it? Part 2
{Just a note this will be a multi-part series 馃挍}
Read part 1 here for information on key people and background :)
2000
Nico & Lewis are both 15 years old & are teammates for the Formula A team Mercedes Benz McLaren.
Here is a quote from Robert Kubica:
"there was always competition. But they didn't fight. It was friendly competition. There was always laughing afterwards." //"they would even have races to eat pizza"
The two were reported to often share hotel rooms in their younger years, the rooms being reported as the
"scene of many wrestling matches between them"
Dino Chiesa even saying this:
"many times I was called by reception about some problem in the room. It might be noise, or they might have broken something. They would never sleep so they were always tired in the morning."
"they both liked ice cream so much, particularly vanilla. During the night they wanted to eat ice cream always, so I had to go out everywhere to find some and keep them happy."
Lewis even saying that he would often persuade Nico to buy him sweets.
The two were known to have competitions over absolutely everything.
Lewis:
"we always had great competition whether on the racetrack or computer games or playing football"
"probably the first bit of competition we had was when Nico used to ride a unicycle everywhere so I thought, 'I've got to learn how to ride this unicycle. I've got to be better than him' I spent all my time outside the go-kart learning to ride this unicycle."
It is said that Lewis taught himself how to ride the unicycle in two hours
2013
While the two were still friends Lewis reflected on his friendship with Nico & he said this:
"I have never laughed so much than when we were racing together. Nico was kicking everyone's butt at that time. We had so great races together and built a great relationship."
"we were just arriving and enjoying go-karts and eating pizzas every weekend, fighting all the time and just having fun, whereas now it's all business"
The two often talked about what they would do when the two of them got to F1 together, making plans to hopefully be teammates one day & go on to become world champions together.
Lewis:
"Nico would say 'when i"m in formula one' and for me it was always 'if i ever get to formula one.' Because obviously Nico's dad was a formula 1 driver- he knew he was going to make it."
Esteban Ocon & Pierre Gasly: What Went Wrong?
Esteban & Pierre. Let's start all the way at the beginning.
2003
Esteban was 6 & Pierre was 7. They both grew up together in Normandy, France, the pair only living 20 minutes from each other. Both being on the track, they decided to get to know each other & over time actually becoming good friends, the two even describing their relationship as "very close". With Esteban even claiming that the first kart Pierre got into, was Esteban's. The two were friends for 4 years.
But the start of this beef between the two, started in 2008.
2008
Esteban & Pierre were racing in a national championship & Pierre overtook Esteban on the last lap of the race, which made Pierre the winner. While however Pierre did end up getting disqualified, it still made Esteban upset, therefore creating a wedge in between the two of them. While the two still competed against each other it is believed the rivalry continued brewing over the years until 2016-2017 came around.
2016-2022
Over the years Esteban & Pierre would try their best to steer clear of each other which meant not becoming teammates & not talking basically at all. So 2016, Esteban Ocon joined F1, signing as a reserve driver for Renault Sport F1. Esteban Ocon in 2017, signs with Force India which was a part of his multi-year Mercedes deal. But at the same time Pierre is making his debut with Scuderia Toro Rosso, at the Malaysian Grand Prix. 2019, Esteban joins Mercedes as a reserve driver after Racing Point (Force India had a name change) replaced Esteban with Lance Stroll. However Esteban was supposed to go to Renault, but the deal fell through. 2019, however for Pierre, was the year that he signed with RedBull Racing. But before the Belgian Grand Prix, Pierre is demoted back to Toro Rosso. 2020, Esteban joins Renault, signing a 2-year deal. At the same time, Pierre is signing with AlphaTauri, a 2-year deal. While in 2021, Esteban just signed a 4-year deal with Alpine.
2022
In 2022, it is announced that Pierre will be joining Alpine. Which for Esteban is a sore spot. But the two don鈥檛 seem to forget about the feud even bringing it up in Drive To Survive where the two say they will never be friends again but will try to be cordial teammates.
A/N - hiiii so I鈥檓 Gigi, this is obviously my first post here, let me know anything you guys would like to see about F1, if you want more deep dives about drama, let me know :)))
