Well this is fucking awkward. I just ran into That Friend. Should have known he'd come to this bar.
It was nostalgic, and I'm about to go out and say hello to everyone, but this fast-tracks what I was gonna say to him. Tomorrow, I'm gonna be cordial and say it was nice to see everyone, but I'm gonna tell him that I'm not coming back and that I'm planning to move to Canberra.

Song Machine is a very eclectic collection of songs. I mean the ethos of the project is making really good singles, and the album is basically collecting all of them after the fact. I feel like Song Machine's appeal is that monthly release of music videos.
I think I've been spoiled by concept albums tbh, like how every King Gizzard album is something completely different. But this could be exacerbated by the fact that I just listened to Plastic Beach before this album.
There was a point where I thought Song Machine season one could be equally as good as Plastic Beach, if not better. As an album, Plastic Beach is better than Song Machine. Singles-wise... considering that Plastic Beach is as solid of an album as it is, with as good of a reputation as it does for its singles, and Song Machine is an album of singles? I think Song Machine is equal to Plastic Beach on this front, if not slightly better.
I say that because every single off of Song Machine was a banger, and there were like 9 of them. Quality and quantity. Plastic Beach had like four of them - not counting Doncamatic - that were either at the same standard of quality or slightly above. Gorillaz have always excelled at its singles, and this entire album of singles never had a single miss.
Either way, both albums are good. Even if Plastic Beach is slightly better, Song Machine season one is a close, close second.

A really cool experience is hearing all these single songs popping up in different places than their single releases. Like, the first 3 songs are the last three singles, but I'm still not used to The Lost Chord being the third song I listen to.

So I'm listening to Song Machine volume one for the first time. I heard all the singles, but this is my first album playthrough.
I have mixed feelings about Strange Timez, always have, but it leads into The Valley of the Pagans really well.

The only two songs on Plastic Beach I don't really like are Glitter Freeze and Sweepstakes. Pirate Jet used to be an aggressively meh song for me, but it's just a closer and I can respect it for that.
Plastic Beach has a 14/16 hit ratio. This truly was one of the best albums of the 2010's.

The only miss on Plastic Beach for me is Glitter Freeze so far. Like it's bouncy and fun, but it lasts for way too long.
It's immediately followed up by one of the most fun, bouncy songs on the album through. The chorus of Some Kind of Nature makes me smile every time.
It makes me nostalgic for Vinesauce. It was through Vinny playing the song on stream that I first came to appreciate. I really hope the Vinny stuff gets sorted out soon, for better or worse, so I'm not just sitting on the fence and tempted to watch content I might regret later on.

There are songs on Plastic Beach that took so long for me to get into, but once they established themselves in my mind they became lifelong favorites.
On Melancholy Hill and Broken, instant favorites. White Flag, Rhinestone Eyes and Some Kind of Nature? Years of avoidance until they clicked into place.

I was gonna go on this massive diatribe about shipping, I was 20 minutes early to a doctor's appointment so I thought I was in for a long wait. I got called in 3 or so minutes after I started writing and I was out 5 minutes before my appointment was even scheduled.
Then I started writing this in line at KFC and I s2g my food came faster than I can recall in recent memory.
Maybe if I fiddle with this post now, the cab I'm waiting for will come around the bend...?
