Drivers BCM Laptops & Desktops

Here's an interesting problem. Several weeks ago, I tested Manjaro 18.0.4 Illyria on my HP Pavilion laptop, and I've come across an interesting phenomenon. The laptop is equipped with a Broadcom Wireless card, and in the live session, both with free and nonfree drivers, the network was up and running okay. However, after the installation, I had no Wireless.

Looking at system looks, I found an error that said WLC_SCAN error (-22). Once I hit the Intertubes with this search, all hell broke loose. I found dozens of Arch and Manjaro forum posts talking about this issue. There were some solutions offered, but they were either ineffective or very difficult to implement. So I decided to try to fix this on my own, hence this guide. Follow me.

This is the latest wireless drivers from Acer for the Atheros and also the Broadcom drivers. Note that this is for a 64 bit system running on Windows 8.1. It has been mainly used by Acer on its laptop the Acer Aspire E5-411G L. Note this is for both the Bluetooth driver as well as the wireless driver from both Atheros and Broadcom.

Problem in more detail

As it happens, in my case, I did have the Wireless icon showing up, and the Network Manager did list a number of access points in the vicinity of the laptop. But when I tried to connect, nothing would happen. I'd type in the password, wait, and then, the selected access point would simply disappear from the list, and no connection would be established. Running dmesg, I saw the following text:

Equally strange, contrary to the affirmation above station-drivers does have Windows drivers for Broadcom 43xx chipset. A simple search with the only word Broadcom does return a full listing of what they have. Then a targeted search with Broadcom bcm-43xx return an appropriate list of drivers available for Windows.

I did have a Wireless network card identified (up and running). Elonex laptops & desktops driver download for windows 10 laptop. The (free) wl kernel module was loaded into memory. However, the system was unable to establish a connection. Turning off IPv6 did not help - this is just an artifact of not using IPv6 on the router(s).

I did attempt some of the quick fixes suggested in the various threads. One of them was to use the hardware button on the laptop case to turn the Wireless antenna on/off, and then check the status with the rfkill command. Some people reported having this help them 'unblock' their cards. It didn't work for me.

I didn't want to start fiddling with yaourt at this point, trying broadcom-wl-dkms, and other tips and tricks mentioned. I wanted to see if I could resolve this with minimal changes to my system state, and hopefully, no need for any downloads via wired network (or similar).

Solution

Looking at other distributions I've used on this machine - including the somewhat problematic Fedora 30, as well as others that did have good, reasonable network connectivity and speed, I realized that I should be using the b43 kernel modules for the Wireless device rather than the wl blob. The first step was to manually unload the existing module (wl) and load the b43 one:

sudo modprobe -r wl

sudo modprobe b43

Once I did this, the problem changed. I no longer had Wireless at all, even though the b43 module has been loaded into memory. So I checked the system messages once again, and I saw the following error:

( 120.170582) Support for cores revisions 0x17 and 0x18 disabled by module param allhwsupport=0. Try b43.allhwsupport=1 ( 120.170590) b43: probe of bcma0:1 failed with error -524 ( 120.170611) Broadcom 43xx driver loaded ( Features: PNLS )

As the error says, I needed to load the module with different parameters:

sudo modprobe b43 allhwsupport=1

Success! Once I did this, the Wireless card came back to life, I was able to connect and use the network just fine. So the problem is solved - but we still need to understand why and then auto-enable the use of the b43 module on boot.

Blacklisted modules

For some reason, both the free and nonfree editions of Manjaro Illyria have the b43 module blacklisted, which would explain why they wouldn't be loaded on boot. You can check this by examining the contents of the file named linux419-broadcom-wl.conf under /etc/modprobe.d. Inside, the whole range of relevant module was listed, including b43, b43legacy, bcma, ssb, and others.

Enable b43 loading on boot

Now that we have a manual fix, we need to make it permanent. This requires editing two files. One, you need to add b43 to the list of modules to boot under /etc/modules-load.d/modules.conf. If you cat the contents of this files, it will show something like:

# List of modules to load at boot

You need to add b43 underneath, like this:

# List of modules to load at boot b43

But that's not all. We need to add a module loading option under /etc/modprobe.d. This is similar to what we did with the Realtek Wireless card to make it work on older 3.X kernels. You need to create a configuration file with the following format: 'module name'.conf. In this case, b43.conf. Inside this file, we need the allhwsupport option:

options b43 allhwsupport=1

To verify, the file should look like this:

cat /etc/modprobe.d/b43.conf options b43 allhwsupport=1

And that's it. Reboot, and you will have your Wireless up and running.

Conclusion

There we go. This wasn't trivial. But I find this more elegant than manually compiling and building modules, and having to use a separate network just to grab the necessary packages. The fact there are also two different directories you need to use to enable the module loading also makes this a bit more complicated.

Anyway, the long-term solution is to have the distro automatically detect potentially 'bad' hardware already in the live stage and make adjustments accordingly - install compilation tools and headers, modify the system configuration in advance, and such, so when the user logs in the first time, everything works. Broadcom Corporation BCM4311, BCM4312, BCM4313, BCM4321, BCM4322, BCM43224, BCM43225, BCM43227 and BCM43228 Based Wireless NICs

In order to install Broadcom BCM4311, BCM4312, BCM4313, BCM4321 or BCM4322, BCM43224, BCM43225, BCM43227, or BCM43228 based wireless network cards, the next steps should be followed:

Step 1: Determining WLAN chip and installing dependencies

First of all, make sure you are the 'proud owner of Broadcom BCM43xx wireless card':

After the WLAN chip model was determined, make sure you have no missing packages needed at compile-time and install them if you do:

Of course, if you're compiling the driver for Xen kernel (i.e. kernel-xen), you should install kernel-xen-devel instead of kernel-devel.

Step 2: Downloading and extracting Broadcom driver archive

Download the Broadcom BCM43xx linux driver archive from Broadcom Official website - you'll find it as in the search results list as either Linux® STA 32-bit driver or Linux® STA 64-bit driver - to your machine and extract it to /usr/local/src/hybrid-wl and feel free to change the ownership of the directory and it's contents to some unprivileged user

NOTE: Why not extract it to arbitrary location and leave the ownership it is? Well, this way the driver module sources remain on the system - where you left them - so you can build the driver module whenever you want (e.g. in case you upgrade the kernel - since driver modules are always compiled for a particular kernel), plus, you can do this as an unprivileged user!

Step 3a: Compiling the Broadcom driver module (on EL6 and EL7)

Driver module can be compiled as follows:

Mind the quotes (i.e. back quotes).

Now, with the current driver (version 6.30.223.271) it's almost certain you'll get an error message instead of compiled driver module (in fact, different scenario other that this error message is unknown to the author). The message might/will vary depending on the kernel and OS version, but on CentOS 6 it should look something like this:

NOTE: This is where the instructions for EL6 and EL7 part ways. So, for EL6, you should follow through step 3a, while for EL7, you need to apply only the patch from step 3a, and patches/sed commands from step 3b, applicable to EL7 only, and compile it as shown in this step (3a). So yes, for EL7, skip the 'sed' commands in step 3a.

On EL6, the driver won't compile because of the if-then-else clause for kernel version checking in file wl_cfg80211_hybrid.c. To remedy this, we'll run the following sed replacement commands:

Just these 'sed' replacements are not enough to ensure proper driver compilation. So, we also need to apply the following patch wl-kmod-fix-ioctl-handling.patch prior to actually compiling the driver. Download it to /usr/local/src and run the following command to patch the driver source code:

Now, try compiling the driver module again:

What you will notice, is that driver module file size reduces (from 8.2MB to 7.2MB). And yes, your driver module works

Step 3b: Compiling the Broadcom driver module (specifics required for EL7)

NOTE: Lately, it's required to apply the patches before the sed statements, which may not always be the case, so if the compilation fails, try doing things other way around, i.e. sed before you patch.

Depending on EL7 point release (or better yet, the kernel version you're running), sub-set of sed replacements to apply will differ. So, stock kernels shipped with EL 7.0 (i.e. kernel-3.10.0-123.X), don't require running any of the commands below, EL 7.1 (i.e. kernel-3.10.0-229.X) require the first two, EL 7.2 (i.e. kernel-3.10.0-327.X), require first four 'sed' commands, EL 7.3 requires first 6 executed, EL7.4 first 7, and for EL 7.5 all 'sed' commands are required so as to make the code compile (along with the one from step 3a):

Again, esp. if you're running EL 7.3, or one of its kernels, you'll have to apply the following patches wl-kmod-01_kernel_4.7_IEEE80211_BAND_to_NL80211_BAND.patchwl-kmod-02_kernel_4.8_add_cfg80211_scan_info_struct.patchwl-kmod-03_fix_kernel_warnings.patchwl-kmod-04_kernel_4.11_remove_last_rx_in_net_device_struct.patchwl-kmod-05_kernel_4.12_add_cfg80211_roam_info_struct.patchBEFORE you apply the above sed replacement commands (otherwise, compilation won't work). Also, don't forget the patch from step 3a:

After applying these to the source code, just follow through the reminder of step 3a - compile the driver, and strip debugging info from it. Again, kernel builds =>229 require first two commands ONLY, builds => 327 require running first four sed replacements, builds >=514 require 6, builds >=693 require 7, and for builds >=862 all sed replacements are needed for driver to compile

Step 4a: Loading the driver module into kernel

Having successfully compiled the driver module, you can now load it into kernel, and eventually set up automatic driver load on system boot (to do all this, you'll have to assume root privileges). Of course, driver module loading can be done only after you remove the existing/conflicting wireless driver modules from kernel (in case these are loaded):

copy the driver module file to a location where kernel can find it:

to be consistent with all other external modules that have been / may be installed from a kmod packages (e.g. fuse, ntfs-3g, etc.)

Next, run:

in order to create a list of module dependencies, and now load the driver module:

If no error was reported, the driver module is now successfully loaded and ready to use. The 'ndiswrapper' kernel module can be removed, provided you don't use it for anything else but wireless driver - but this is not necessary.

Step 4b: Loading the driver module into kernel on boot time

Couple of more steps are needed to get your module load every time the system boots. First, edit the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file adding the lines:

By doing so, you're preventing these modules from being loaded into kernel at boot time and conflicting with the wl module. Second, in order to load the wl module into the kernel on boot time, create/edit the file /etc/sysconfig/modules/kmod-wl.modules and copy-paste the following contents into it:

Your driver should now load every time you reboot (except of course, when you install the new kernel, in which case the driver has to be re-compiled for it following these same steps).

Appendix B: Broadcom chip intermittent problems

This driver module, in author's experience, is sometimes known to require multiple reboots to make the WiFi work. In layman's terms, the WiFi card, finds the AP(s), but fails to associate it with the driver. I've made numerous attempts to make the card/driver work without a reboot, to no avail. Starting/stopping wpa_supplicant service, turning WiFi on/off, (un)loading the driver, ..etc. Sometimes it would only start working after several reboots.

Rumour has it, this is caused by 'improper' loading of the WiFi card firmware on boot, hence, only rebooting the system fixes it.

Another problem (probably caused by improperly loaded firmware) is choppy/flaky network connectivity. The cards appears to have associated to the AP, but shows poor signal quality even though you're in the same room with the AP. even pings are dropping, and bottom line - connection is useless. Again, this should be resolved by repeated reboots until the firmware is loaded properly.

In the Windows start search bar, type device and printers. This article helps to fix an issue in which Windows 10 doesn't install specific drivers for USB audio devices on the first connection.

Original product version: Windows 10, version 1703 Original KB number: 4021854

Symptom

When you connect a USB audio device to a Windows 10 Version 1703-based computer the first time, the operating system detects the device but loads the standard USB audio 2.0 driver (usbaudio2.sys) instead of the specific device driver.

Cause

This issue occurs because the USB audio 2.0 driver (usbaudio2.sys) isn't classified as a generic driver in Windows 10 Version 1703. Therefore, the system assumes that a compatible, nongeneric driver is installed for the device even though the driver is generic.

This issue also causes Windows 10 Version 1703 to postpone the search for other compatible drivers through Windows Update that typically occurs immediately after you install a new device.

Resolution

To fix this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

To resolve this issue, install update 4022716.

Method 2

If the device-specific driver is distributed through Windows Update, you can manually update the driver by using Device Manager. For more information about how to do this, see update drivers in Windows 10.

Method 3

If the device is not yet connected, first install the device-specific driver, such as by using the appropriate installer. After the device-specific driver is installed, Windows 10 will select that driver instead of the standard USB audio 2.0 driver when you first connect the device.

Method 4

If the driver isn't distributed through Windows Update, you can manually reinstall the driver. To do this, follow these steps:

Install the device-specific driver (see Method 2).

Open Device Manager.

When it restarts, Windows will try to reinstall the device by using the device-specific driver.

TrueView® enables you to display a graphical representation of steno outlines and their TrueStroke data generated by the Luminex, Diamante and Wave writers. TrueView helps you analyze your writing results and to understand how the writer has interpreted your strokes. TrueView files are saved and can be reopened for review by scrolling and searching for specific steno or timestamps.

The Splash Screen Loader Utility allows you to see a photograph of your own choice upon startup of the Diamante. A collection of stock photos is included if you wish to use one of them. Simply create an RTF-CRE personal dictionary and up to seven job dictionaries from your CAT software and use the instructions and the RTF2Writer utility provided.

DateTime to Stentura Format Utility for non-CATalyst CAT Software Size: 1.15MB MB Date: 8-27-15

Even if you don’t have Case CATalyst 7.02 or higher, you can use the DateTime format in your Luminex, Diamante, élan Mira A3 or Stentura Fusion writer. The DateTime To Stentura program converts Stenograph Writer files that are stored in the date and time format (i.e. 20090710-084528) to Stentura compatible format (File.00X). Once converted, they can be read into your CAT software as usual.

OpusToWav Conversion Program If you are not using Case CATalyst Version 20 or higher and have been given an Opus audio file, you may use the OpusToWav Conversion Program to convert the Opus audio file to Wav format. The Wav format file will not automatically synchronize to the Case CATalyst transcript. If you are using Case CATalyst Version 20 or higher, there is no need to convert the Opus file to Wav format. The Elonex ONE (also known as ONE) was a netbook computer marketed to the education sector by Elonex. The ONE's operating system was called Linos, based on Linux kernel 2.6.21,(1) and the device had Wi-Fi connectivity, Ethernet networking, a solid-state hard drive, two USB ports and weighed less than 1 kg.(2)

The ONE was described by Elonex at the time as the cheapest laptop in the UK at a retail price of £99 in the UK. Its official unveiling took place on 28 February 2008 at The Education Show at the NEC in Birmingham(3) and a shipping date of June 2008 was announced.(4) Customer deliveries started in August 2008.(5)

In February 2008, Elonex stated their vision was for 'every pupil to have their own laptop' to 'improve computer literacy across the nation'. Elonex aligned the cost of the ONE with the aims of the DCSF closing the achievement gap between those from low-income and disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers. To support this initiative Elonex committed to 'donate 1 ONE to underprivileged children from disadvantaged areas for every hundred sold'.(6)

The Elonex Sliver is a mixed bag, but while it does have its issues, if you're after an attractive machine for browsing the web and writing the odd email, this is a great option.
