Kamika Ekadashi – Day to attain salvation

Kamika Ekadashi festival is dedicated to worshipping Lord Vishnu and is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over by Hindus, all across the country. It is an auspicious fasting day of Hindus. Kamika Ekadashi is celebrated during Krishna paksha (dark fortnight) of Shravan month. In the English calendar, it corresponds to the months of July-August. This year, Kamika Ekadashi will be celebrated on July 28, 2019. It is believed that this holy Ekadashi pardons all the sins and the person attains ‘moksha’.

The Main Legend (Story)

An interesting story depicts the glory of Kamika Ekadashi. In ancient times, there was a landlord in a village. Once this landlord fought with a Brahmin and accidentally killed him out of anger. The landlord wanted to repent by being a part of the Brahmin’s cremation rituals, but the villagers denied permission. Hence, he was cursed with a Brahmin’s killing. Then the landlord approached a saint if he could get rid of the sin. The saint advised him to keep a fast on Kamika Ekadashi and worship Lord Vishnu. The landlord kept a fast in the same way the saints told him. That night, the landlord was sleeping beside the Lord’s idol. Lord Vishnu appeared in his dream and relieved him of his sins.

He was finally forgiven by the Lord. It is believed that Kamika Ekadashi story was narrated by Lord Krishna to Yudhishthir. Before this, it was told by Saint Vashishta to King Dilip, who attained salvation. The sacred day even eradicates the sin of killing a Brahmin.

However, one should NOT think that one can kill a Brahmin or other innocent folk and then go unpunished simply by hearing of this Ekadasi. Such knowing commission of sin is punishable.

Whosoever hears these glories of the Kamika Ekadasi with faith becomes free of all sins and returns home, back to Godhead - Vishnu-Loka, Vaikuntha. The one who worships Lord Vishnu on this day receives immense benefits and gets relieved from the sins.

Kamika Ekadasi Rituals (Vrat Vidhi)

On the day of Kamika Ekadasi, devotees take a bath early in the morning followed by the prayer dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Panchamrut is offered to Lord Vishnu and worshipped with colourful flowers, Tulsi leaves, fruits, milk and sesame seeds. Feeding a Brahmin and donating him some money, lamps, clothes hold immense importance on the day of Kamika Ekadashi. They keep Jagaran on Ekadashi night and spend their time in singing bhajans. On Dwadashi which is the next day of the Ekadashi, devotees break their fast.

Devotees worshipping Lord Vishnu on Kamika Ekadashi are blessed, with prosperity and health. On Kamika Ekadashi, Hindus also visit pilgrim centres and take a bath in various Tirth like Ganga, Godavari, Yamuna, Krishna and Kaveri. Kamika Ekadashi also helps one to be relieved from ‘Pitru Dosha’.

ISRO was set to launch India’s most prestigious moon mission Chandrayaan-2 on July 15 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Shriharikota in Andra Pradesh but just before few minutes of liftoff, the much-awaited launch of Chandrayaan-2 was called off. Due to the technical snag, ISRO was forced to suspend the launch of Chandrayaan-2.

The Rs. 978 crores Chandrayaan-2 project is India’s second lunar exploration mission after Chandrayan 1 includes a lunar orbiter, lander and rover, all developed domestically. The main aim of these three modules is to analyse the moon’s surface and conduct scientific experiments. The instruments on the rover will observe the lunar surface closely and send back data, after which ISRO will carry out analysis of the lunar soil.

Chandrayaan-2 has now been rescheduled on July 22, 2019, at 2.43 PM. If successful, Chandrayaan-2 will be the second mission to soft-land near the lunar south pole after the Chinese Chang’e 4 mission and would make India the 4th country to achieve a soft landing on the moon, after USSR, USA and China.

In spite of living such a bizarre and amoral life, where nudity, cannibalism, indecency, ribaldry, and unscrupulousness is involved, they are yet known as beings who transcend physical barriers in reaching the ultimate. This is because Aghori Babas feel that only by accepting what is real and only by going through the realm of darkness, can one witness the illuminating light of God. While practicing such a lifestyle, they mean no harm to anybody else, but it’s just the way with which they approach life and its possibilities. They believe in indulging in the “Left Hand” Tantric worship where Lord Dattatreya is said to be the founding deity of Aghor. As such, Aghori Sadhus are not involved in the context of the society or how the society feels about them as they are immensely enmeshed with themselves, and their process. Dark Night of the Soul- An Initiation into a Better Life

 Are you feeling lost or sad or meaningless or hopeless, or all of them? Almost everyone experiences something like this at least once in their lifetime. The developments in the sky have fascinated & intrigued humankind for a very long time. Till a few centuries back, people were unaware of the happenings even in that part of space which is close to our planet Earth. Space is full of mysteries. How the ancients experienced the Solar Eclipse? 

In ancient times, cultures tried to understand why the Sun temporarily disappeared from the sky, so they came up with various reasons for what caused a solar eclipse.

There were many cultures wherein the legends surrounding solar eclipses involved mythical figures consuming or stealing the Sun. Others interpreted the event as a sign of angry or fighting gods.

And as for China, people there believed that a celestial dragon thought to lunch on the Sun, causing a solar eclipse. Thus, the Chinese word of an eclipse is chih or shih, which means to eat.

Well, in ancient Hindu mythology, the demon Rahu was beheaded by the gods for capturing and drinking Amrita, the Gods' nectar (Amrit). The head of Rahu flies off into the sky and consumes the Sun resulting in an eclipse.

Korean mythology has another explanation for solar eclipses. It says that solar eclipses happen because mythical dogs are trying to steal the Sun.

Well, people in several cultures traditionally get together to bang pots and pans and make loud noises during a solar eclipse. It is believed that making a noise terrifies the demon causing the eclipse away.

How Was The Lunar Eclipse Seen In Different Parts Of The World?

In Mesopotamia, a lunar eclipse was considered a direct attack on the king. As they could predict an eclipse with reasonable accuracy, they would put in place a proxy king for its duration. Someone who could do it would pose as the king, while the real king will hide and wait for the eclipse to pass. The proxy king would then disappear, and the old king is reinstated.

As for the Indian mythology also known as Hindu Astrology, people saw lunar eclipses as the result of the demon Rahu drinking the Amrit (elixir) of immortality. The two deities, the Sun and Moon quickly decapitate Rahu, but having consumed the Amrit, Rahu’s head turns immortal. As revenge, Rahu’s head chases the Sun and Moon to devour them. If he catches them we have an eclipse – Rahu swallows the Moon causing the eclipse.

And in Islamic cultures, eclipses were interpreted without superstition. In Islam, the Sun and Moon indicate a lot of respect for Allah, so during special eclipse prayers are chanted, including a Salat-al-khusuf, a “prayer on a lunar eclipse”. It seeks Allah’s forgiveness and re-establish Allah’s greatness.

On the other hand, Christianity has equated lunar eclipses with the wrath of God and often identifies them with the crucifixion of Jesus. Notably, Easter is the first Sunday after the first full Moon of spring, ensuring that an eclipse can never fall on Easter Sunday, a potential mark of Judgement Day.

What is Metaphysics? Metaphysics translates into over and beyond (meta-) the knowledge of nature (-physika). Metaphysics deals with the philosophy of reality. As a branch of philosophy, Metaphysics aims at understanding the essence of the “being.” Metaphysics seeks to understand the first cause of life, the reason for existence, and the ultimate nature of consciousness. These were the earliest interpretations of the world around us. Aristotle wrote a complete set of books examining three main questions- What is existence and what sort of things exist in the world? How can things continue to exist and still undergo changes? And, how can this world be understood? Aristotle called his works Ta Meta Ta Physika (after Physics). According to him, these were the first philosophies, and anyone who understood these was worthy of teaching them to others. Aristotle’s works became one of the earliest philosophical doctrines. What kind of Questions do Meta-physicists deal with? While exploring metaphysical subjects, you will come across the kind of questions Metaphysics deals with (and has been dealing with). One of the most important things that Metaphysics deals with is the existence of reality- what are the things that exist, and how are they related? 16th century English philosopher Francis Bacon argued that Reality is Absolute. Things exist, hence we perceive them. However, Indian Vedantas have long argued that everything around us is Maya- a creation of the mind. You will find many such theories. Does reality exist? If yes, then what is reality? You will find a lot of answers in Metaphysics. Metaphysics also deals with the concepts of identity and change. What exactly is an identity? How do we relate to things? This also explores the mind-body conundrum- are they separate, or are they the same thing? Metaphysics seeks to look into the space-time issue as well- the past, present, and future. What are the laws controlling space and time? Are they objects or just plain simple concepts? Is time a single straight line of events? Aristotle considered it that way. But, several philosophers/ scientists (Einstein) viewed it as being relative to the observer. So many theories argue for and against the concept of time-travel. People who treat time like confetti (example: Stephen Hawking), view time-travel as something that is not only possible but in existence. Time is just one of the many things the great philosophers worry about. The most important thing that everyone talks about is the origin, evolution, and future of the Universe i.e., cosmology. Scientists have their own theories. But, people dealing with concepts beyond physics have postulated certain amazing doctrines. It all boils down to different world-views. Religion views the origin of the Universe as mystical, God-made. Interestingly, some of these philosophies view the circle of creation, evolution, and destruction as something that keeps repeating itself (the Hindu and Greek philosophies are great examples). The others see it as one world with a definite end (see: some of the Norse mythology stories). This brings us to another topic that Meta-physicists deal with- the concept of determinism. Determinism is the belief that everything that happens in the Universe is pre-planned, and we are all but pawns. Another interesting concept that Meta-physicists deal with is the relationship between everything. Here, philosophers attempt to learn the way things correlate to each other, and the cause and effect of stuff. For instance, astrology explores the movements and positions of various celestial objects and their influence on human beings. These planetary movements signify tendencies, such as love, in our lives. For people who believe in this, the entire Universe is connected; the study of the Universe becomes the study of the relationship between the various objects in it. To fuel our curiosity, we have time and again tried to build a basis for reality. Our basic instinct is to know what is happening and why is it happening. And if we do not feed that instinct, we won’t be able to attend to our other needs. It’s simple; if we can’t perceive reality, how will we live in this world? Every person has his/ her version of reality, which is completely fine. One cannot have one single explanation of the Universe. Besides, the base of an individual’s knowledge stems from his/ her understanding of reality. And that’s what meta-physicists aim to achieve. We don’t need to be great philosophers and go about unearthing the workings of the Universe. But, an average human will always desire a belief system which forms the basis of his/ her existence. One is free to choose from a vast array of metaphysical beliefs (religion, mysticism, astrology, meditation). Note that not all philosophers will ask you to answer the metaphysical questions. Buddha, himself, did not believe wasting time asking questions about the Universe. He called them unnecessary (avyakta). However, modern Buddhists did come up with a theory of reality revolving around their understanding of dhammas (the ultimate physical and mental events). The Cosmic Dance of Shiva

We always wonder as to how existence came into being! Is the whole of the universe made of energy particles that abide by the rules of matter and energy? Or is it still impossible to know the intrinsic nature of the Universe and existence in its entirety? There are a lot of philosophies attached to these questions with no perfect answer and yet there have come sages and saints who have clearly expressed that everything is as simple as it is complex in nature. It is just about experiencing this Brahman (cosmos) within yourself. One of the mythological stories interestingly says that the dance of Shiva created the universe and the same dance in a different form can destroy it as well. Dance, here, is a form of energy that vibrated throughout the cosmos when Shiva became the Nataraja (Nata = dance and raja = lord). In Yogic science, it is believed that the whole of cosmos exists on the lap of Shiva (Shiva is equivalent to nothingness, which is why it is referred to as “that which is not”). Furthermore, the Nataraja form of Shiva denotes the cyclic nature of the cosmos and it also signifies how the whole of the universe is in the form of a dance, an ecstatic dance. The universe seems to be an unimaginable random chaotic phenomenon that cannot be explained by logic or with an intellectual understanding. This is beautifully expressed by Carl Jung who once said that “In all chaos, there is a cosmos, in all disorder a secret order”. Therefore, even though existence in itself seems to be accidental, erratic, unsystematic and arbitrary, a close and deeper look at it feels that it is more systematic and planned than anything else we could ever discover. Similarly, the cosmic dance of Shiva is sacred and in absolute geometry, not just mere random movements of the body, but a perfect dance by a perfect dancer. Scientists across the world, also postulate that the whole of existence is nothing but the dance of energy particles in different forms. Thus, resembling this creation with a superlative dance form which is mystical, transcendent and magnificent in its nature. This ecstatic dance, performed by the ecstatic and blissful dancer Shiva, is called Lasya and Tandava, one associated with the creation of the world and the latter associated with the destruction of all the things that resist the evolution of a being to a higher possibility. The statue of Nataraja is described in many Hindu textbooks and the artwork is carved in unique ways at the Ellora and Badami caves in around 6th century BC. Also around 10th century BC, the Chola Dynasty had built a bronze sculpture of this form of Shiva with precise details and arrangements taken from the various Hindu texts, which now stands at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The Nataraja pose of Lord Shiva has the following important features and attributes: This art shows Shiva standing on his left leg and uplifting his right one with respect to the Natya Shashtra pose while dancing in extreme ecstasy. In his left hand at the back, he holds Agni (fire) representing the forces of creation as well as destruction, the front hand is in the elephant hand mode also known as the Gajahasta Mudra or in the stick hand mode also known as the Dandahasta Mudra. The hand in the front is wrapped around with a snake which depicts Abhaya or fearlessness and the other hand at the back holds the Damru, in the Damaruhasta Mudra, which denotes time and rhythm. The other body parts of Shiva in the Nataraja pose like the fingers, neck, face, ankles, head, ear lobes, etc is decorated with symbolic items that have their own significance. Shiva, in this form, is also seen with three eyes representing the Sun, the Moon and the Third Eye which is the eye of wisdom. He is also seen smiling, portraying that in spite of being in this immense energetic form, he is still calm and blissed out from the inside. He is shown standing on a lotus pedestal and is surrounded by a circle of flame which symbolises the cosmos. This arch of flames is also called Prabha Mandala which, in Hindu mythology, represents the cyclic existence of life which creates and consumes everything. The statue also shows Shiva lifting his left leg, and balancing himself on his right one over a dwarf demon Apasmara Purusha who symbolises ignorance and evil. Thus, crushing down the phrase “Ignorance is bliss” which is often used to solace oneself and others around. But you can't ignore your life, right?
