part of the reason why understanding comics has become the most universally accepted and widely taught piece of comics theory is that unlike a lot of theory (comics or otherwise) mccloud is able to immediately show you what he means because understanding comics is of course itself a comic and he can thereby demonstrate what he's describing in a way that makes it much more immediately recognizable to the reader. of course understanding comics does have its flaws which have been discussed at length by other comics artists and theorists and probably needs an updated version (mostly little things like aspect to aspect panel transitions being much more prevalent in modern american comics than he says due to the influx and influence of manga into the american market or the new forms and formats introduced by digital and online comics) but overall if you want to understand comics... read understanding comics

counterplay was impossible because 90% of the time sending any card to graveyard or god forbid banishing it would activate another complicated ass chain allowing your opponent to replay that card and pick a card from their deck and play it and then get a token on each card which triggered another card effect that allowed them to special summon a card from their special deck with like 3000 atk and 100x def with x being the amount of cards in the graveyard which has another effect that lets you summon another version of it with the reverse stats where the card art is just a flipped and recolored version of the first card and this will all be happening during YOUR attack phase so they have their whole turn ahead of them to do even more of this until they can summon some even more bullshit monster from their special deck thatll kill my blue eyes with enough overkill damage to one hit ko me. and this was every match

i used to get my ass beat on yugioh duel links every day because i refused to play an otk deck but i wanted the free orbs or whatever from entering live matches. my only hope was having kidmodo or ancient rules and a blue eyes in my hand and even then i would still get beaten badly by someones bullshit combo of 5 cards all with a stupid made up word like infinicross in their names that all had card text a mile long because you can have as many duplicates of those as you want but they only let me have one ancient rules in a 60 card deck. as you can see im still mad about it

i wish i could get my hands on full scanned and translated shonen jump magazines from the 70s and 80s because i think its really interesting how japanese comics culture is so heavily influenced by the weekly/monthly magazine format to this day which is a format that has effectively gone extinct in mainstream american comics outside of imports. besides the smaller franco-belgian market america and japan are the two most dominant producers of comics culture and yet the modes of publication and distribution are very different and have influenced the actual content of the comics themselves (and honestly is a big part of why modern american comics and comics culture seem so stagnant when compared to their japanese counterparts). i would love to be able to survey what readers were getting out of shonen jump in its first couple decades that made it so long lasting

i still dont get the hype for part 5 like there were some good side characters but overall i think it was way less compelling than part 4 or 3 by a wide margin. 6 and 7 both have really good and really bad parts but overall i like them more than part 5 because they were never boring and the bad parts looped around to being funny again the same way they did in part 3. part 8 i cant speak on because i never read it and part 2 i have said my piece on and made my peace with. part 1 was great because it was a classic late 20th century vampire story from the time when vampires could do anything. and also they still had hamon... man i miss hamon. at least they brought it back for part 7 one of many reasons that gyros the goat
