Japanese Mobile Phone Culture
Keitai denwa (携帯電話), meaning “portable phone” in Japanese, is the full length term used for cellphones in Japan. More often though, cellphones are simply referred to by its shortened form, keitai (ケータイ), and the more recently popular; smartphone (スマホ).
Garakei (ガラケー), otherwise known as the clamshell style cellphone was the most popular style in mainstream Japanese society beginning in the mid to late 90s. However, the popularity began to fade in the early 2010s when smartphones became more widespread. This page serves as a tribute to the mobile phone culture in Japan with a focus on the garakei era (ガラケー時代).
