Today I am just chilling at home after a long walk on Wormwood Scrubs with my two lurchers. I love to watch old fashion shows and films and nothing beats the first ever fashion film made by Peggy Moffitt’s husband William Claxton in 1967. @cynthiaerivo - The Story Continues Q: If you were giving advice to women about achieving excellence in their lives, in the way you have, what would that advice be? A: The first thing I would say, is focus, know what you want and then make the steps to getting it. A lot of the time people don't realise that the first step to being successful and achieving excellence or achieving the thing you want is actually knowing what the thing is, if you have no direction how you move forward or up. The second thing I would say is to not be afraid of truly being yourself, there's only one of you and if you don't stop pretending to be someone else how will we see what your potential is?! Q: Who would you rate as a goddess and why? A: Josephine Baker!! Quite frankly she was a style icon and practically a super hero all at once!! Before Cynthia left for the bright lights of Broadway, I spent some time with this petite powerhouse - just us girls talking about life, love, fashion and of course vintage! Here is some of what we talked about: Q: What does being a goddess mean to you? A: I think being a Goddess comes with great responsibility, I don't think it's just about the way you look or the clothes you wear, but the kind of person that you are. I think it's about encouraging other women to be confident and to excel in the things that they do and to help others. I hope I'm able to live up to the duties of a goddess! Q:Why does vintage fashion appeal to you? A: I think vintage fashion appeals to me because there are certain cuts in certain fabrics that just aren't used any more that for me, compliment the way the body looks. They make me feel confident, they are full of history and they help to achieve style in a way that, I personally, think that is hard to get sometimes wearing the new clothes of the day. There is something also quite cool about wearing a piece of clothing that was for someone else at some point that fits like a glove now for you, I own a pair of tailored red trousers, that were originally made, I believe in the 50s for someone who's waist size is exactly the same as mine and the length is perfect so they fit almost like they've been made just for me. Q: How would you describe your fashion style? A: I think I could probably describe my style as chic and structured. I may use colour-blocking from time to time, I will probably always use a heel, but I'm probably not going to use floral very often. There is sometimes, however, a dash of Afrocentrism because I'm Nigerian and I can't help myself and print is way too much fun. Today marks the opening of The Color Purple on Broadway starring 'our goddess', the divine @cynthiaerivo in the title role of Celie, alongside @iamjhud @daniebb3 and produced by none other than @oprah. Over the past year and a half, I have had the pleasure of dressing Cynthia numerous times on the red carpet but she has also become a dear friend, almost like a younger sister. As with all of the women I dress, she is such a goddess. Having graduated from RADA about 6 years ago, her career has gone from strength to strength. And speaking of strength, she is super fit and trains like a demon! She has the voice of several angels and dare I say - can nail 'And I Am Telling You' beautifully. Watch it on Youtube.
