These two hm and um at each other in such a genuine way compared to a lot of “confused” scenes we get. They’ve been through a lot in 3 days, more so than just surviving the island. Zoro got Brook his shadow back. He received shusui only to almost die hours later. Brook saw that happen too.
They watched one another bounce between death, and life, and duty. They sit before a grave of Brook’s crew—his former life. Zoro asks to bury a dead friend too, in yubashiri.
There is a lot in this awkwardness, but I think most of it is quiet respect.
Nami who hordes things. Sometimes food, sometimes valuables, sometimes other items. Nami who collects little trinkets and can't get herself to throw anything away. Picks up every penny she sees on the ground even though she doesn't need it. Gets almost irrational if anything she owns is moved around or she can't find it. Steals things and then puts them back to just to prove she could take them if she had to. Habitually scans every room for items of value and anything sharp she could defend herself with. Nami who is free and happy and following her dreams, but Nami who will always have a scared little girl surviving as a thief inside her.
Ok I said this and haven't been able to stop thinking about how we see Zoro face hardships and come out on the other side with scars to bear except with kuma at thriller bark. Sure he was beat to hell and back, but didn't seem to have any noticeable scar left from it other than a mental one. I think not having some sort of scar or permanent mark to say "I made it through. I survived" probably kinda fucked with him. Worth noting how we see Zoro have a flashback to the events of thriller bark later at sabaody, something that's never happened with any of his other fights (at least iirc) idk where I'm going with this really but. Zoro and scars and their importance to him. Basically.
