If you ask your grandfather, he would share about how it was physically and mentally challenging to earn income back in his days. The situation has greatly changed over these years and it is now easier to earn money as compared to a few decades ago because of how internet has been able to assist the users. The use of internet has opened a lot of opportunities for the users to earn money to the extent that many people earn a lot of money from the internet by just sitting at home. We have moved from a time where earning money meant going out and doing jobs to a time where we can now earn money by sitting at home (Rob, 2012).

The seven-year-old boy, Ryan, earned his money by making videos of reviewing different toys. As stated by Forbes between June 2017 and June 2018 Ryan earned $22 million in pretax through his YouTube channel Ryan ToysReview, and this figure showed an increase by 100% from the previous year.

YouTube Media Switch Up
The application which I have selected for this week is YouTube. The social media application differs from my usual usage because otherwise, on regular basis, I am more frequently making use of the applications like WhatsApp, Facebook and then Instagram. YouTube is not my everyday go-to application which I use. Instead it is more like an application that I open rarely. However, the usage has been quiet changed ever since, I started this assignment, as I make use of YouTube more often now to learn about its usage and the demographics which are more involved in its usage.
The most interesting thing which I learned about this media application is that YouTube is now used more for blogging purposes and many businesses are now doing their marketing on YouTube and it has become a source of earning for them. This problem is even frustrating after knowing the smart phone ownership statistics which reveals that 92% of the population of age 18 to 29 owns smart phone (Milijc, 2019). This makes a huge portion and it has become one of the major reasons for wasting our time into non-productive activities. Nielsen study also reports that American spend 11 hours on daily basis on their screens (Milijc, 2019). Ward mentions the quotation of Sherry Turkle that “Computers don’t just do things for us, they do things to us, including to our ways of thinking about ourselves and other people” (Ward, 2017, p. 5). This problem does not ends here but instead, the researchers have found the incorporation of internet technology in our lives have resulted in causing more problems and few successes.
The community that uses this platform more often as YouTube is regarded as the American online video sharing platform which has been headquartered in San Bruno, California. Three of the significant former employees of PayPal named Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim created this service in February 2005 (IseQualto, 2019). The site was then bought by Google in November 2006 for the worth of US $ 1.65 billion (Kemp, 2020). This is the reason why YouTube is regarded as one of the subsidiaries of Google. YouTube is the platform that allows the users to view, upload, rate, share, report, comment and add the videos and other subscribers to the videos. It has the potential to offer the wide range of corporate media and other user generated content.
It is estimated that around 3.48 billion people, or 45% of the people living on this planet, now use social media (Kemp, 2020). Compared to 2018, the number of social media users have grown by 9% and it is estimated that 366 million people used social media for the first time (Sarah, 2008). This statistic is interesting if we look at it from the way that 1 million users were registered on social media every day during 2018. 3.26 billion people use smart phones in order to use the social media and it is estimated that an average social media user spends an average of 2.5 hours per day (Milijc, 2019). It was estimated that around 70% of the adults in the United States use one social media platform at least (Kemp, 2020).
Americans use different social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Skype, SnapChat, Instagram and others on a regular basis and one person may be using all these social media platforms on their smartphone devices. It is estimated that an average social media user in the United States holds around 7.1 social media accounts (Cooper, 2020). The trend of using social media is higher among adults between 18 and 29 years of age and this figure estimates to 88% (Kemp, 2020). The majority of the social media users claimed that it would be extremely difficult for them to give up on social media. The format of media which is used on this platform is based on video content.
The available media content include audio recording, music videos, documentary films, educational videos, movie trailers, live streams and other blogging. YouTube has also been used as the source of income in the present times because of the services which it offers and the AdSense potential. The study sheds light on the perspective of how YouTube has been used as the potential to generate large income among the potential users. Social media has not only progressed because of the marketing advantages that it offers to businesses, it has also developed because it is a very effective source to gain feedback from potential customers. As businesses can connect with consumers in different parts of the world, they can instantly assist with their support to customers, and if necessary they can also gather feedback to make improvements for the organization. There was a time when print advertisements were the only option, but now the world has started to shift away from print marketing to digital marketing because of the benefits it has to offer (Walker, 2012).
As by the time of February 2017, there have been more than 400 hours of the contents which was uploaded on the YouTube every single minute and one billion hours of the content was being watched on the YouTube channel every single day. As per the time of August 2018, the YouTube has been able to be ranked as the second most populous site which has been used in the entire world. This has been reported by the Alexa Internet, which has regarded the site to be just behind Google. As per the report mentioned by May 2019, there have been more than 500 hours of the video content which has been generated and uploaded on the YouTube every single minute (IseQualto, 2019). This has been based on the reported quarterly advertising revenue as well. YouTube for that reason has estimated to have more than US $15 billion in the given annual revenues (Todd, 2010).
The brands and other organizations make use of this platform by marketing their brands using video content. It is estimated that around 90% of known brands used social media to promote their brands and social media platforms have also given birth to many businesses that have become successful today (Milijc, 2019). Social media platforms paved the way for existing businesses to increase their market share and promote their brands in other parts of the world.  Because such a huge population relates to each other through the social media, it was never easier for businesses to reach out to their customers.

Twitter Switch Up 6
For this week’s selection I selected Twitter as my social media medium. Twitter is one of the famous social media platforms available however I never had the chance of using Twitter formerly because I felt that other platforms consumed much of my time already. I had always heard of many celebrities using this platform, and had a faint idea because many tweets are also shared on other social media platforms. Choosing this social media platform was a difficult choice because I was not sure how I would be able to adjust myself using it. However, I was also excited to know more about the application because it seemed different than other applications and I was interested in how I can learn using it in my daily life in a positive way.
I am normally fond of using social media platforms where I am able to interact with people I know in different ways. For instance, I tend to share pictures, video, events and many other posts with my friends and family members so I can share my memories with them. The idea behind using Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and many others are the same; to share your life with people you may know in different ways. However, Twitter’s concept may be more or less the same but it is different in a way that people cannot carry out a lot of activities using this platform. To start off with people tend to share their thoughts in form of Tweets which are usually limited in words. After joining Twitter I realized that while other social media platforms help to connect with our loved ones, Twitter actually helps connect with famous personalities around the world.

It was very interesting to know the statistics associated with Twitter. To start off it was interesting to know that 66% of the Twitter users are males whereas the rest are females (core, 2020). There are more than 330 million monthly active users on Twitter and 80% of the total users access the social media platform through their mobile device (core, 2020). Twenty six percent of the Twitter users are between the age group of 30 to 49 years whereas 38% of the users are between the age group of 18 to 29 years old (core, 2020). Apart from the United States, the countries where Twitter is used the most includes Japan (35.65 million), Russia (13.9 million) and the UK (13.7 million) (core, 2020). The most followed personality on the social media platform is the former President of the United States, Barrack Obama. Most of the users on Twitter are believed to use it for news sources.
The statistic has revealed that 56.3% of the users on Instagram are the Females and 43.7% are the male members (core, 2020). There are also around 120.7 million Instagram users are from the United States (core, 2020). There are 37% of the U.S adults make use of the Instagram and the United States also has the most important number of the Instagram users (core, 2020). For the users of Instagram, there are 89% of the users which are outside the premises of the United States (core, 2020). There are six in every 10 online adults are having the Instagram accounts. Other 30% of the global Instagram audiences are aged between 18 and 24 years and other 35% of the population is between the age from 25 and 34 years (core, 2020). There are other 72% of the teens make use of Instagram (core, 2020). There are 73% of the U.S teens which also say that Instagram make best way for the brands to reach them out for the new kinds of promotions and products (core, 2020). The Instagram, in total has around 200 million+ Instagrammers which visit at one of the businesses profile on the daily basis (core, 2020).
There are other 130 million of the Instagram accounts that make around top 10 of the shopping post in order to learn about the different new products on the monthly basis (core, 2020). Instagram is also used by 35% of the teenagers and they have the preference to make use of the social media platform (core, 2020). Sixty three percent of the Americans also use of the Instagram platform on daily basis. Around 35% of the US teenagers also reported that they spend around 28 minutes per day on the platform in the year 2020 (core, 2020). Instagram is also used for the Business purposes as there are around 75.3% of the businesses that are making use of Instagram in the year 2020 (core, 2020). There are around 70% of the shopping enthusiasts who always turn to Instagram in order to make the discovery of various products (core, 2020). The unique part is that around 69% of the US marketers also plan to spend even most of their influencing budget on the Instagram page as it has most audiences base (core, 2020). The research shows that “Latin America, for instance, sees a greater proportion of smaller influencers, with close to 90% of the region’s influencers counting fewer than 10,000 followers” (Iqbal, 2020).
There are also around 1/3 of most of the given stories on the Instagram which are from the businesses. The potential advertising on the Instagram has reached more than 849.3 million users (core, 2020). There are some interesting fun facts about the use of Instagram as the communication medium because it is regarded as the 6th most popular form of media communication platform for the respective development of ideas. Instagram has the highest popularity in terms of the exploration of page as it is viewed by 200 million accounts on the daily basis (core, 2020). There are also more than 50 billion of the photos where even an egg has 54.2 million likes (core, 2020). Hashtags are used as the most popular form of communication channel where 7 out of every 10 Hashtags which are always branded in nature. Photos that have faces are able to get 38% of more likes (Systrom, 2010).
Compared to the Facebook, Instagram is also used as the network for the younger users, as per the given Statista, where more than half of all the global Instagram user population are of age more than 34 years old. It is also the second most popular app after the Snapchat application. The highest concentration of the users within the United States is at 116 million users (core, 2020). India is also having 73 million of the users and Brazil has 72 million users (core, 2020). Instagram is also used as the most important social media platform for the communication purposes as Facebook is used more regularly compared to Instagram which is used 60% on daily basis. The Instagram users also spend as much as time on this platform as it is done on any other platform where the research adds that “They browse for an average of 53 minutes per day versus Facebook’s 58 minutes per day. Time spent on a social network is a strong indicator of an engaging platform” (Chen, 2020). This shows that media is actually used aggressively by the users.
It was quite interesting to observe that most of the users use this social media platform with the purpose to know more about the global news. People who use Twitter can use a hashtag to promote any kinds of events that may have occurred in the news. It is possible to view the top trending posts and topics on Twitter and this keeps the user updated regarding the latest news and events. The fact that conversations are short and meaningful is really what interested me because this precise nature of Twitter disables users from wasting a lot of time and valuable resources. People tend to share images and short videos on Twitter and it is easy to follow them. Many celebrities personally use Twitter themselves instead of hiring a social media team and this helps the public connect with them directly.

I observed a lot of brands and organizations using Twitter and this is mainly to build the company’s reputation. Twitter is a very effective medium for brands and organizations to connect with the general public. It is now common for the general public to escalate their complaints and experiences on Twitter with the hope it reaches the desired organization. This has been happening to a great extent and brands have been able to facilitate the customers to improve their bad experiences. In addition, the brands are not only to satisfy the public through their messages and tweets, but they also use this social media platform for digital marketing purposes. It is possible to sponsor advertisements in Twitter and this can reach to millions of active users. I believe that this is beneficial for the reason that Twitter users are likely to use this application more than other social media platforms. The research adds that “During 2017, brands tweeted between 112.6 to 130.5 times a month on average (Clement, 2019). It’s an increasingly cost-effective way for businesses to market; with total ad engagements increasing by 81% and cost-per-engagement falling by 32% between Q2 2017 and Q2 2018” (Iqbal, 2020). This information has helped to understand that businesses make use of the media for engagement.
I believe that it first it is not quite easy to reply to the different Tweets because it may seem confusing for the beginners. It is quite difficult researching what other people are involved in because not much information is shared on this platform. However, when I started using Twitter I was quite bored because there was not much interesting to do, but as I discovered the application in detail with the passage of time I started to realize the benefits that this application offers to users. The best thing about Twitter is that it not only helps to waste less time, but it also helps to keep yourself updated with the latest trends and events happening around. I feel that Twitter is more productive than other social media platforms that we use and this is because most of the posts are short and logical.

Module 2: Tumblr Media Switch Up
The application which I have selected this week is Instagram. I selected this app because of various purpose. I have never been into Instagram much in my life as I have been more into selecting the apps like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter to make some professional and personal connections. Throughout the entire week, I made use of Instagram in order to find out that how I interact with it, the kind of users are present on the social media and how various strategies and platforms are used in order to implement the communication and discussion link with the website individuals. Throughout the app, I made use of various changes in order to learn the respective ideas which are connected to the website.
I have always been inclined towards using the Facebook messenger in order to carry out communication with various brands. I also make use of different brands’ Facebook pages in order to find out what the brand offers and the services which they price. If I wanted to purchase anything or I have any query about any product or service, then I make use of its Facebook messenger page in order to carry out the communication. Facebook messenger has been one of the most important messengers which I used in order to create a communication between the customer representative and the clients. I always had positive experience with the brands as they always have replied instantly to my messages etc.
However, my usage of Instagram was a little different, as I did not know how this consumption could change the way I communicate with the brands. I navigated through the Instagram features for a few days in order to find out that how it works. I first followed all my friends and then I searched through its “search” icon and followed many brands and products etc. This has been one of the most important usage of the Instagram as I got to learn a lot about other users and how these bloggers are making collaboration with many brands while influencing their brands. I have observed that Instagram has become one of the prominent domains for digital marketing.
The most interesting thing which I found form this usage is about how the users always influence the users. I have learned that collaboration between the bloggers and the brands has become one of the key perspectives and usage within the social media platform.
Most of the users of Instagram include young adults. I have observed that teenagers and even the underage individuals are using the Instagram platform. As there is an abundant elderly population making use of social media sites like Facebook and LinkedIn websites, the usages of Instagram are more popular among the young generation. This is also because of the reason that Instagram users are more into finding out brands, following bloggers and even following the celebrities etc. Instagram is also popular for many sports club because every single sports club has made its Instagram page which has been one of the most influencing domains within the sports communication. I have seen the idea that Instagram is much popular among the teenagers and young adults because they follow such brands and pages because of the abundant information that they provide to its users.
I have seen many companies and organizations making use of Instagram platform. Organizations like Target and Walmart make such prominent use of Instagram. The company used Facebook and Instagram to be more formal. Almost all the posts on Facebook were professionally taken pictures, and they were intended to be used in promotions. Many stores often posted about sales that are happening in the store. Many retailers companies used Facebook more than Instagram. Instagram is being used primarily to show what the company is selling. Target frequently would post the same post on Facebook and Instagram, but they never posted the same thing on all three sites. One other difference between is how they advertised certain events. During the observation period, the company was sponsoring the MLS All-Star game. Target advertised the event on their Facebook page, but they did not post anything about it on their Instagram (Newberry, 2019).

Another great example of social media marketing is carried out by a non-profit organization Charity Water. The digital marketing presence of Charity Water is based on the respective use of social media as the major platform for instance it gives ads in the right-hand slide bar on Facebook along with the photo use in order to encourage donations. There are many videos which are posted on the Facebook page of Charity Water which are organic in nature. The major goal for the digital marketing is to increase the overall funding and donation for the clean water project. These ads also however interest the donors and videos which are posted to help the individuals to gain more awareness about the major purpose of the project. Charity Water has also made use of Insta-gram in order to provide many of the emotionally provoking photos Charity Water Instagram (Instagram, 2020).

                                           Instagram Discussion
           For this week’s assignment I chose Instagram as a social media platform. Instagram was launched back in 2010 when smartphones technology started becoming very popular. I am familiar using Instagram for quite some years but I was not a very regular user which is why I never tried to explore the various features the application offered (Statista, 2020).
           My selection of Instagram is different from Facebook, the social media application I normally use. I am quite fond of using Facebook regularly and communicating with my network, but on Instagram was quite different. I did not enjoy using Instagram very much because Facebook offers so many things to do, for instance play games with friends online. Instagram in contrast was quite dull because there isn’t much a person can do apart from skimming through pictures and videos. While I could spend hours using Facebook, I felt that Instagram did not consume a lot of my time because it does not have much to do.
           It was interesting to know that Instagram is mostly used by people who want to inspire their followers by their pictures and videos. The community that uses Instagram are not quite fond of wasting their time using the social media platform and they are only interested in showing off their lives through pictures and videos. Most of the people have developed the habit of revealing their lives to their followers. The followers can be friends or strangers and it is a source of entertainment for the users because if people show interest in their lives, it can increase their following. In addition, people also follow their interests and their favorite celebrities as well through this platform.
           I believe that millennials are the ones who are most active on this platform. People have developed the habit of showing their lives to everyone in the past and this habit is not quite common especially in old-aged Instagram users. Instagram takes a note of what we search for and they suggest different pages that may be of interest to the users. It is a great platform for people to follow their passion and interests because one can find so many people that share similar interests. It makes it easier for people of similar interests to network together.
           What I found interesting was the fact that using Instagram does not waste a lot of precious time because there is not much that a person can do. There are a lot of pictures, videos and people that we can discover on this social media platform and it is quite incredible how people can use hashtags in order to promote the latest trends. The application also offers the feature of not allowing general public to access one’s Instagram profile and this is a great security feature that gives security and privacy to the users. It was quite interesting to see how different businesses are promoting themselves so well with unique ideas. The fact that less text is used makes the platform quite attractive for me.
           Many brands and organizations are promoting themselves on this platform and they strive to attract their audience through pictures and videos, with very little text. The brands use this platform to promote their products and services, to show the public how it feels to work with the organization and use it to create social awareness among the public. The individuals on the other hand are more interested in showing their own lives or following lives of people they like and admire in their lives. Apart from sharing their own life moments, many individuals just use it for the purpose of stalking others which is why they tend to waste a lot of their precious time.
           Observation included the fact that Instagram is owned by Facebook and therefore there are so many features that we can automatically share on both platforms through a single click. I was not aware of this fact before and when I found out about it, I began to realize the similarities between the both. I also did not know that we can discover so much activities on Instagram regarding our interests. Like Facebook, there are so many events going on and businesses are advertising these events on Instagram. Ever since I used this social media platform regularly for a week, I feel more addicted to it now and spend a great amount of time discovering new things.

Media Switch Up-Media Consumption
I selected the media format of Instagram in order to carry out my media usage. The reason for selecting this format is that I have never used Instagram for communication or networking purposes. I have always used Facebook Messenger, or WhatsApp more in my life.
I initially used to make use of WhatsApp messenger in order to carry out my communication. I have always been inclined towards making use of WhatsApp because it is instant, free and it allows the person to know whether the other person has received, read or seen the message. This gives me comfort as I am sure that my message has been received. I also get to know that whether the other person is currently online or not.
This was indeed an interesting choice which I did. I was new to Instagram and not even a much bigger fan of Instagram, may be because I never gave it a try. However, my selection was a great choice as I learned a lot from it. I searched through my friends' profiles, got to know about their lives and even followed many bloggers. These bloggers include the ones with lifestyle blogging, food blogging and many other interesting blogging materials related to home decor, travel and parenting etc. This medium selection was indeed one of the best switch choices that I have ever made in my life.
I have observed that this media is used widely by many people belonging to different demographics, religions, cultures, backgrounds and social settings. I have seen white people sharing their strong marital and parenting tips. In other words, I have seen Asian people traveling around the world and sharing their experiences and, for the most part black people making delicious food recipes and sharing their experiences. Diversity and unique experiences of people on Instagram making it so popular among the people.
The media of Instagram is full of videos, stories, photos and even tutorial films. The content has voice with background music. The tutorials are fun filled with interesting music’s, for instance, I have seen many food preparations videos where the blogger would teach the audiences how to prepare food using fast videos and the videos have background music and text written on the videos. It is so convenient to watch all these videos and sharing them or save them to view later.
 Instagram is used widely by the brands in order to market their products. Each of the brand has its own official Instagram page. Similarly, many Instagram bloggers' profiles are used by the brands in collaboration and they ask the bloggers to market their products, share reviews and recommend them to their followers. Instagram is used widely as a marketing medium in the current technology-based arena. However, community people are also making use of Instagram for blogging and personal purposes which is also becoming a source of connectivity and source of income for these bloggers (Benson, 2018).
I have seen most of the bloggers' profiles to be related to fashion, lifestyle, home decor and parenting etc. The reason might be because people prefer to know more about this information and like such contents.
