i go to the shop and I ask if they have any raspberries. they say no, they used to sell raspberries, but they haven't had any in stock in the last 15 years. I ask if there's somewhere else I can go to buy raspberries. They say no, with confidence and pride, they're the only shop around who has ever sold or will ever sell raspberries. Other shops might sell other fruit, sure, but they have a monopoly on all raspberries forever. I ask if they're possibly planning on them selling them again in future? they say they can't tell me that.

on the way home, I encounter someone eating raspberries. I ask and they tell me that they grow their own, they got some seeds from the shop back in The Raspberry Days and kept them. They take me to a field of many beautiful raspberry plants and invite me to pick my own, they're free for all the town to pick whenever they'd like.

honestly sometimes stories where characters have self awareness and solve their problems maturely can be really refreshing sometimes. and sometimes it feels like therapyspeak slop. intense stories where no one is capable of understanding themselves and act out in incorrect ways can be very fun. and sometimes it feels like contrived bullshit. whatever makes "a good story" is harder to make happen than just using the right kind of characters using the right words

It's interesting to me that, while we often acknowledge with a clenched fist how letigious Nintendo is, we never really treat it as more than a nuisance. People don't seem to want to dwell on the fact that the individuals who develop the emulators/cracks/etc sometimes have their entire lives ruined for threatening Nintendo's profit margins. People put them in the same box as YouTube DMCA takedowns (because they do that, too) but they're really on a level their own.

Idk my point isn't that we should all be too afraid of Nintendo to do anything they wouldn't want, I'm mostly just thinking aloud. It's interesting and sad to me that people expect emulation to be an option because they know it will be when in the background there's often a pretty deep human cost to that existing that we all just accept. It feels callous that it doesn't really matter what happens to the people who make these things as long as we get our hands on them before they're caught.
