Athena and Medusa, but lovers... This is inspired by the original myth, where Athena gave her a stone-turning vision to protect her

Loosely inspired by the scene in TROP when Galadriel was on the ship to Valinor (I know she didn't have her ring at that time)

if I look at everything in a realistic way, because realistic headcanons include tension and imperfections, i do think that laura would be somewhat jealous of gabby in terms of her relationship with akihiro.
jealousy, of course, is a layered emotion and doesn't always equate to anger or dislike. jealousy can simply make someone sad or reminiscent of something they didn't have. that's what i mean by this.
laura was barely older than gabby when she very first encountered akihiro when he was on the dark avengers. and it wasn't much longer before she met him again on madripoor. it wasn't until after that when they decided to acknowledge each other as "something", and it wasn't until all new wolverine that they finally labeled each other as family.
since fully accepting his roll as their older sibling/brother, he's really protective of them and definitely shows up when he needs to, and definitely shows up more than logan (or anyone else) ever did.
because of that, i think laura would reflect on not having someone like him during the times she really needed it. gabby at least had her brother and sister that helped her somewhat transition to life with other mutants (even though she also had some bumps in the road - laura had far more). laura only had logan and, well, x-force happened on top of a whole bunch of other things.
even though she's now clearly really attached to akihiro (and i say that she grew fond of him before he grew fond of her), and her feelings are canonically reciprocated by him, i think she would still grieve the time period in which they could have been close and she wouldn't have felt so alone for so long. i think she'd grieve not being there to help him either.
i think laura would be a little jealous of gabby. in a realistic way.
so yeah.

Guys, I can't find the cover artist. Anyway, it's fun to re-adapt the covers with Lester and Akihiro.

I'm listening to Florence + the Machine in a fit of nostalgia - Ceremonials is definitely a favorite album of mine - but I had forgotten how much intertwined their music was to my old fic series We shall burn. I had it on repeat while I was writing it, and as you may remember I put quotes from the songs as chapter epigraphs, and long story short I'm getting flashbacks from the story. It wasn't a bad story, was it? It's tainted by all that happened then, and I haven't reread it in a while. But I think there was something good there.

Finwë, Míriel, Indis & Findis, Írimë
Sons of Fëanáro - Fëanáro, Nerdanel & Celebrimbor - Children of Ñolofinwë - Ñolofinwë, Anairë & Grandchildren - Children of Arafinwë - Arafinwë, Eärwen, & Grandchildren
HC:
Finwë: I like to headcanon Finwë as a cartographer, he was one of those wo worked on making maps when they traveled, and arrived, to Valinor. He keeps his hair free from jewelry in honour of the early days and for those who didn´t follow Oromë, a practised followed by Fëanor. While I like to image Fëanor being his favorite he still cared a lot for his other children, and always made room for those in his family, if that meant taking a small child and some dolls or building blocks with him to court, or going for a walk in the garden to talk or see a finished projects when he had work to do, or merely eating lunch together.
Míriel: I know a lot of the fandom shares the idea of Rúmil being her father, and I think that´s great because I love that headcanon too, for many reasons, but one of them being the closeness between Rúmil and Fëanor suddenly being a bit different and more meaningful in a way. Before coming to Valinor I imanged she mostly embroidered and weaved baskets, after being crowned she was always found with something in her hands, a small weave or embroidery, or on one of the bigger looms around the palace, she did have a whole room dedicated to her craft and I image she spent a lot of nights there as sleep came hard to her. Her best friend was Indis and they both babysat Ingwë when he was young and they got permission, which is where they meet Finwë on the great journey.
Indis: Vanya are taller than the other groups of Eldar due to being so near the Ainur, as I depict here, but Indis is general just tall which, even before Valinor which she makes a point of to show in her youth, especially with Míriel who I headcanon as on the shorter side. Míriel did try to teach her embroidery before but never had much succeed, although she did embroider most of Indis´ veils in the hopes of teaching from her by showing Indis. Most of the royal gardens are overseen by Indis who got a love for them after her wandering of Valinor where she sang, I also imanged that while everyone knew Maglor was gifted in song, Indis was the first one who really saw how great he would become in his song, just not bad he would become too. She was Finrod´s, who later learned from Maglor, first music teacher at the demand of Maglor and Fingon. After Fëanor's first rebellion, she left with Findis to join her brother, Ingwë, with the Vanyar and didn´t speak with Finwë before he died, where he claimed that his love for Míriel didn´t make him love Indis less*.
Findis: Findis was most closely related to her Vanya line, and after Finwë´s death, I imagine she was one of those who pleaded with Manwë for his release, a release we are never told was granted. This closeness to Manwë is also what I think made her reach for priestesshood. After the Noldor began returning she gave a lot to be able to shelter them as they returned to the life they had had before as much as was possible or tried to build a new one for themself. I also think being the oldest child of Indis meant a lot for her and might have been one of those things that pushed her closer to the Vanya and Valar, and her faith.
Lalwen: Lalwen served as chief adviser both for Maedhros for a very short time and then later for all the high kings to come after. Upon joining Círdan with Ereinion she quickly feel in love with him and while I don´t think they ever got married they might as well have been. She was the closets to Fëanor due to them being alike in their restlessness, which became both of their downfalls, as I headcanon she died in the start middle of the second age in a small battle simple because of her denial for everything being calm and war over. After all she had spent to many years in the middle of war, I don´t think she knew anymore how to live without it.
Other HC: my headcanon of Míriel and Indis friendship are taken from the part where Míriel was first named Indis and than later renamed Míriel so Indis could get a name too instead of being nameless. I also don´t image she "divorced" Finwë but Indis is said not to miss him after his death and that her love was most for Fingolfin, which I think was made in rebellion against Finwë´s own favoritism.
*this is canon and taken from the "Laws and Customs among the Eldar" I just think it gets overlooked a lot as I really like it myself.

Help everyone got so excited that they invENTED EASTER*. The Frodo-Sam Ascension……. The irl medieval March New Year getting established like this in the Tolkienverse…. 😭
*actually since Easter is a moveable feast, while I feel like it’s much more associated with the New Year, technically March 25 is um the Annunciation of the Virgin. Or Lady Day. But since neither Frodo nor Sam are experiencing a miraculous pregnancy, thematically it’s still more of an Easter.
**actually I was wondering if the crumbling of Mordor and the volcano, plus waking up somewhere cool and green (tho they should be playing board games too, if Tolkien wanted to rlly match the text) were meant to echo a Norse apocalypse in the poem Voluspa as well. Sam does say “what’s happened to the world” and I need to properly reread Voluspa to remember, but yeah in Voluspa we see fire hitting the sky and then the new world begins, which we see rising from the sea with an eagle flying over it— not a perfect match, but (not my translation):

(I don’t know what the freaking eagles are up to; I’d assume they’re actually the (sons of?) the eagle that makes the wind at the end of the world in the Vafthruthnismal, rather than this eagle, but idk, maybe they’re both. Maybe there another eagle. I’m not a Norse scholar save me.)
Resetting the New Year does fit with that a little, but I think it’s a shaky and very “ehh, well maybe” read. And as usual, Tolkien isn’t copy/pasting . He’s crafting, he’s getting a little weird with it.
The Frodo-Sam Annunciation-slash-Easter IS haunting me forever tho.

Does anyone even WANT the Gift of Men?
-----
For as much as Finrod waxed poetic about how amazing the "Gift of Men" is, and how Jirt went out of his way to make sure everyone knew that dying is a gift, I can't think of really anyone who had the ability to choose Elf vs Man who chose Man for a reason that wasn't to escape from something worse in life.
Obviously, there's Lúthien and Arwen, who chose the Gift of Men because the prospect of living forever without their husbands was worse than dying. I wouldn't really say that they WANTED the gift, though. I think, if they'd had the chance, they would've made their husbands immortal instead.
There's Elros, and we don't really know why he did. There's this:
Elros chose to be of Man-kind and remain with the Edain; but a great life-span was granted to him many times that of lesser men.
Which suggests he wanted to be among Men, which I suppose is the closest we've gotten so far.
But then again, I've also heard people say that maybe the trauma the Fëanorians put him through drove him to what is sort of God assisted suicide. (And even I've said that maybe he saw how miserable it is to hold grudges for eternity, and he decided he wanted to do the exact opposite of that.) They're only headcanons, yes, but Jirt never provided much evidence to the contrary.
There's also Eärendil, who would've chosen Men if Elwing hadn't chosen Elves. (And he didn't end up as a planet.) But he's a star, so he doesn't count. ;)
Well, 33% of peredhil choosing Men for their own sake isn't very good.
And if we take everyone who made the Choice who we know of - Lúthien, Eärendil, Elwing, Elrond, Elros, Arwen - we get this:
3/6 chose Men
2/6 wanted to be among Men
1/3 who chose Men did it for themselves
4/6 wanted to be among Elves
2/4 chose Men anyway for their husbands
Just ... Idk. As good as it's supposed to be, less than half of the people able to choose chose it, and only a third of THEM did it because they wanted it in and if itself. Kind of makes it ring hollow.
