This is the go-to article I made in 2017 to explain what Gegege no Kitaro is to people who don’t already know what it is. They never end! Every time I talk about it, it’s still new to someone! This is unfortunate, because Kitaro is as important to Japanese popular culture as Godzilla or Ghibli, if not arguably more respected. These characters have been so central to so many Japanese childhoods, you’re missing the complete context of countless anime and manga if you’re still unfamiliar with them!
