Final Fantasy Suscitatio XIII, Chapter 6

Well, after not posting for... *checks calendar* ...um... eight months... here's the next chapter of Final Fantasy Suscitatio XIII: Definitive Edition! And because it's a bit of a short, filler-y chapter, I do plan to post the next chapter soon. Ish. No idea how soon, though. Feedback helps tremendously in getting me to post more.

I haven’t written anything Jak and Daxter-related in, oh… twenty years? But there’s been an idea in the back of my head for all that time, and I’m certain I can still write all those characters spot-on.

I need to just write it, I think. For old time’s sake.

Just venting some general frustration about the Horizon games that finally clicked with me. Please note this is my own opinion and you are, of course, free to disagree. I just need to complain somewhere.

I finally figured out what’s annoying me about Zero Dawn and Forbidden West: the characters are flat. Almost all of them are flat. And Aloy is far, far, far too infallible to make for an engaging protagonist.

Aloy never truly fails. She’s never allowed to make bad decisions and then face the consequences of such. She’s beautiful and brilliant, and everyone knows it. Even when she runs off to do dumb things in FW, it never comes back to bite her. She mouths off about everyone and no one ever pushes back. It’s incredibly boring and off-putting. Nothing is ever her fault, she’s smarter than everyone, she’s more capable than everyone… and she’s always proven right in the end. It’s obnoxious and I got tired of it quickly.

And Elisabet? She’s perfect, too. The writers had a chance to break her pedestal and take away her goddess-like status, bring her down to “human”, with the lore in FW. I wanted to see her be imperfect and Aloy have to face that. Instead, she was still a saint to the end.

The few imperfect and rounded characters are the ones I really love. Erend. Sylens. Faro. Tilda. Beta. Let them fail and one-up Aloy (or Elisabet). Let them face consequences and be ugly and imperfect and human.

I’ve tried to write fics multiple times for ZD and FW, and just can’t. I have to add to the characters to make them interesting to write. I have to manufacture flaws and problems to make it all work. It’s a lot of work. A TON of work.

You know why the idea of Liz and Ted having even a brief fling appeals to me? Because it’s a beautiful disaster. Because Liz might be brilliant, but that doesn’t mean she was never naive. Aloy finding out about that would shatter her glowing perspective of Elisabet, and I love that. It adds an air of chaos, of failure, to everyone. It breaks the illusion and brings a much-needed air of realism to everything. I want Aloy to fail because she never does. I want her to break because rebuilding would be fascinating to watch. It’s what we all go through as living human beings.

I think it’s part of why I latched onto Stalker 2 like I did. Here were a bunch of surprisingly well-rounded characters who were easy to explore and expand. Even Dalin surprised me and became one of my favorite characters. I love Skif and Strider for their pain, and their strength. There’s a reason I tag anything Strider with “strider my beloved”. I came to the game after a long stretch of playing ZD Remastered, and it felt like crawling out of a tunnel to breathe fresh air at last.

I want to write some Horizon fic, but I constantly stumble at the same place: I have to add too much. Manufacture too much. To the point where some of these characters end up with long shadows stitched into place by my own brain, desperately trying to give them some depth. I love the lore, the world, and most of the characters, and I eagerly await the announcement of the FW sequel.

That doesn’t mean I have no negatives for either game. And that doesn’t mean that, despite how much I enjoy both games, I don’t still desperately wish for a little chaos, imperfection, and reality to creep in and break things a little, so I can watch the beauty of brokenness made whole again.

I have so many ideas for a fic taking place years after the Strelok ending of Stalker 2, including exactly how it starts and ends. I know nobody would really read it, but I really want to write it anyway. It would still have a ton of familiar faces, but there’s also a darn good reason it’s taking place just over two decades later.

Ugh. I don’t know. It’s just bouncing around in my brain. It won’t leave me alone.
