My Byler conviction wasn't only built on the way Mike and Will interacted with each other throughout the seasons.

It wasn't based on whether two straight white dudes would know how to write a good gay relationship arc either.

At least half of that conviction came from the fact that I know they can write a good straight relationship arc (and they have, with more than one pairing in the show) yet they treated Mike and El's relationship like the stepchild that they didn't love but had to legally care for (giving them just enough that the people who cared about them didn't flip out, but always the shortest end of the stick).

TL;DR: You don't need to get queer-baited to see that Mike and El's relationship is doomed
