Blog 9- I Do Not Like It, But I Did It
I must be honest; I do not enjoy revising MY work! It has been this way for as far as I can remember. Anytime a paper is given back in efforts to make corrections or edit, and it’s NOT mandatory to do, I will not do it. If I receive the grade of an “A” or “B”, I am fine. I understand that revising is one of the most important steps in writing, but because I have done it for so long, I am tired of it, LOL.
But enough of me complaining about what I do not like. Let’s talk about something worthwhile. I enjoyed reading and editing my peers’ work! I know, it's weird. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to revise and correct students all the time and I have no problem with it. Helping another person to reach their best work makes me feel great about myself. Michelle and Kathy are extremely good writers and I think they did an awesome job on their entire blog project. I also enjoyed the informative pieces of their essay, as it made it easier for me to stay focused on their essay.
In all, revising other people work is fine, but when I am instructed to correct my own, be ready to hear complaints!

Blog 8- Two or Three, Not Just Me
In today’s blog, I am going to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of exercising by myself or with someone or something. (That something is my dog(s), yes, we got another one!) While exercising, I sometimes feel alone, for instance, when I walked to the store last week for a can of Pepsi, so I researched some things to make me feel comfortable and happy. In the beginning, I thought of exercising with my Siberian husky because he is very energetic and has a happy spirit. According to Penn State University, Siberian Huskies are very athletic and energetic dogs that enjoy running. They also have very good endurance and a strong willingness to work, which benefits me because when I want to stop running, Sybee will continue to pull, yanking my entire body ten feet within two seconds!

Exercising with a partner will not only take away the “lonely” feeling but can also improve the efficiency of the workout and help achieve your fitness goals. In the article, https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/meet-catch-and-keep/201401/5-reasons-why-couples-who-sweat-together-stay-together bringing your significant other into the picture may boost your energy to work harder or “keep up” with. In the beginning, my significant other and I would argue about what I should do, how I should do it, leaving us angry at each other for ultimately, no reason at all. But research shows that exercising with a partner that you love helps achieve our goals sometimes more than we would by ourselves.

Blog 7- Feeling Good
Blog 7- Feeling Good
At this point in the semester, I am feeling good! I feel lighter in my weight size, although I am not ready to stand on a scale just yet. Almost every time I visit my mom’s house, she compliments on how my stomach is starting to shrink. I nod and say, “oh really”? LOL, as if I am oblivious to my diet and exercise. My walking and running improved how I feel, and it also allows my thoughts to wonder while I am alone. Last night I decided to walk to the store to buy a soda. (Do not shame me, my walking made up for the number of calories I consumed!) On a serious note, I used to drink sodas every day because I brainwashed myself in believing that it calmed my mood and stopped my back from catching painful, sudden cramps, but this was pure ignorance. After I experienced my second episode of kidney stones, I started drinking more water and realized not only did it relax me, but my back no longer ached. But back to my thoughts wondering as I walked. I did not feel afraid, I did not rush to cross the street, but I simply felt calmed and relaxed. And you might think that I am insane for walking alone, at night, dawdled, unarmed, and relaxed, all for a can of Pepsi.
All to say, I am feeling good!

My personal collage is full of random things, as they should be, right? Well, above you will find that I am in a relationship, in which I have been for almost five years. No, do not clap, it’s been a long journey! We love to bowl and travel together. I included a picture of some history books because unexpectantly I became a history major the middle of my sophomore year in undergrad and the “Don’t Shoot” photo is a politically issue that America has been suffering with for decades. At the age of 24, I feel that I have changed into a “New Girl”, I loved being alone unless I am with my family or boyfriend. The “Quiet, Riot” photo represents my personality. I am a quiet person and very professional at work, but once I arrive at home, you would think I had 6 beers (my limit), LOL. I also love mascara, I used to say that I did not wear makeup, but mascara is clearly that. I am changing my eating and drinking habits, as I have experienced kidney stones TWICE from lack of H2O, therefore the water and kale must be included in the collage! Thanks for reading, I truly hope you enjoyed!

Rain, rain, go away, come again another day. Genrun30 wants to exercise, come again another day. Cold weather go away, Genrun30 is trying to lose some weight!
It’s obvious that Georgia’s weather does not agree with my personal health goals and I am sick of it! It has been cold, rainy, windy, tornado warnings, all of the above, for the past week and a half. But, I cannot allow the weather to end my weight loss determination! And of course, as I was writing this blog post, I viewed this wonderful meme on the internet that agreed with my thought process.
See, the old me would have disagreed with this post, forced me to ask my significant other, as well as my mother, “Would you exercise in this crazy weather”? My mom would say, “Hell nah!” LOL. My significant other would say “Would you?” And in the end, I would end of eating her 48th birthday cake with some vanilla bean ice cream, rubbing Sybee to sleep (My lovely Husky).
Because of the terrible, indecisive weather, I decided to stop taking elevators to the 4th floor of my job’s building and to stop taking horseback rides up the steps on my strong, handsome man. Instead, I walk. Yup. I choose to walk. No, I do not own one of the fit bit things, but I repeatedly tell myself that my legs will become stronger, my asthma will one day disappear, and my belly will shrink. I also have increased from one male push up, to five!! Isn’t that fantastic!!!
I hope the rain and its friends heard my friendly, but fern corny lyrics earlier because I meant it!

Blog 4 - Research
“The patient is really the expert in his or her own self-change. We are experts in medicine, but patients are experts on their own behavior”, says Kathy McManus, director of the nutrition department at Harvard-affiliated and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In other words, it is ultimately up to us to change our lifestyle, weight, diet, terrible habits, or anything else hindering us from the ultimate goal. We have doctors, counselors, weight training coaches, family members, and whoever else that encourage us to do better, but we have to want it more than any of the people surrounding us.
“Benefit to Improving Diet and Exercise at the Same Time” is an article that talks about how to effectively manage your diet and exercise for better results. McManus conducted a study to 200 people that were over the age of 44 whose diets and exercise levels were below the “healthy” standard mark. A list of things was included in this article about what each group did to improve exercise and diet, and I will add that everyone did not meet their potential diet, but I will let you read on why. I included the link from Harvard University for additional reading on improving diet and exercise at the same time.
https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/benefit-to-improving-diet-and-exercise-at-the-same-time-201304266126
I included a link on how a healthy portioned plate should look, depending on what type of eater you are. (vegetarian, vegan, cannibalism, or pescatarian) Cannibalism? Lol. Just playing. I have watched too many movies entitled “Wrong Turn”.
https://www.choosemyplate.gov/MyPlate
I will now move from the prestigious Harvard University to Penn State University to discuss the pros and cons of exercising in the gym and outdoors. Personally, I think exercising in the gym has to be with a group of people to make it worthwhile. However, to provide a counter-argument, exercising in the gym may be more beneficial than outside depending on the muscle or body part that one is focusing on. I tried exercising with my significant other and we disagreed on every movement he wanted me to do. I felt as if he tried to push my abilities to the extreme, which caused outrage in the gym, full of people starring. I do not understand how someone who does not exercise any more than I do, can tell me what to do, how to do it, and why! However, once I joined a fitness group, I added it to my schedule of reminders because I was comfortable, having fun, and in the room with people that wanted weight loss or something beneficial pertaining to health.
Penn State University conducted a study with 833 adults and the results indicated that the people that exercised outdoors felt more energetic, positive, less depressed, or tense. The study indicates that exercising outside will more likely put you in a better mood or will be more beneficial.
https://sites.psu.edu/siowfa16/2016/10/18/which-is-better-exercising-outdoors-or-indoors/
I also think that exercising outside, especially running to another destination, encourages that person to make it back home as quickly as possible. One day I decided to run to a stadium that is seven minutes by car, but about 25 minutes on foot. I was feeling energetic and positive that day and wanted to get out for some fresh air. Once I made it to the stadium, I started praying that my heart rate slowed down because I felt as if my asthma was bothering me. (Mind you, I have not had an attack since 7th grade, lol) However, I just knew I was dying that day. After I calmed down, I realized that I had to make it back home. I did not have any other mode of transportation and did not want any other mode of transportation because that would ruin my whole idea of perseverance. I prayed again and started speed walking back home. The thought of running to the couch as soon as I entered my two-bedroom apartment seemed like the best thing to come. I had never walked so fast in my life and guess what? I accomplished all of my goals for the week!

Last week my exercising included my beautiful husky, Sybee. This week, I wanted to have the same motivation as I did while running with my main guy. However, I knew something changed when I decided to shower before the workout. Before I started this cycle again, in fall 2018, I would only shower after the workout, which made sense right?
Well, I showered before my tortuous push ups to come. As I sat on my sofa, putting on my blue and white Nike’s I recently purchased from Plato’s Closet, I wondered if I could do the “male pushups”. I chuckled to myself, placed my body on my flat carpet, (that needs some steam cleaning) and exploded with air! “One!” And that was it, only one male push up. I knew better, but I insisted on trying. As I continued with my “girl pushups”, I made it 100 by 10 reps each. My arms felt like fresh spaghetti noodles when I am transferring them into the pot with the seasoned ground turkey.
As I mentioned earlier, I showered before my workout, which was strange and wrong to me because I never made it outside to run my laps! “Next week”, I said. “Next week”.

Why in the world do I decide to stick to a workout plan when the low is now 28-35 degrees outside??? Whew! This has been a challenge considering the fact that I love the hottest temperatures possible. I visited Arizona once before and I enjoyed the weather at 117 degrees! Yes, 117 DEGREES!
During my first week working out with nature, I added my Siberian Husky, Sybee to the journey. I said to him, “Want to go for a walk?” Anytime he hears the word “walk”, he insanely jumps for joy and runs around in circles howling. It is the cutest thing ever coming from a husky. As we exited the door, the wind hit my face so hard like the iceberg in Titanic. I thought to myself, “I live in the south, not the north!” “Why is it so cold?” We live near an Evergreen Tree forest that is approximately 2 acres. Sybee is steady grabbing the leash with his sharp canine teeth urging me to walk. As we walked, I started to warm up like a toaster oven, feeling good about myself. But of course, I could not run the entire forest, I have asthma! We ran for a while, then we would walk, and the pattern would continue until we made it around the entire area. It was vital that I watched out for tree trunks that were left after obtaining the perfect Christmas Tree during the holidays. I could not allow falling or tripping, it would ruin my ultimate excercise flow.
As we were approaching our finish line, we were both completely out of breath, but I felt amazing. I felt as if my body was yelling at me, “Keep going Geniqua!” I realized that I no longer wanted the birthday cake and vanilla bean ice cream I was fantasizing about earlier, I only wanted and needed water. I promised myself that I would run again next week with music, instead of a with a dog that runs as fast as cars going through the school zone at 25mph.

From the age of 15 to 19, I weighed about 120 pounds. I would always say to myself, “I want to gain weight, I am tired of people telling me I am too skinny.” One day someone told me that my skinny toes resembled eagle paws! I was outraged! I would eat more than I should, I would compare my weight to other girls that were my age, I guess my self-esteem was a 6, on a scale from 1 to 10. By my sophomore year of college, my mom insisted that I seek birth control, just to be safe from all the college fun and activities. I agreed that I should try birth control, and I assumed the side effects would NOT affect me. The side effects were weight gain, appetite changes, and mood swings. Boy was I wrong! My senior year of college, I weighed 160 pounds! Most of my pants would not fit anymore, but I did not do anything about it. I was happy about being “thick”, instead of skinny.
I am 24 years old now and I weigh 188 pounds! Each semester as a graduate student, I have tried to attend the fitness workout classes to knock off some of this unwanted fat. I have not been as consisted as I should have been, however, I want to change this. My goal this semester is to get out of the gym exercising and try outdoors instead. I will run around my neighborhood 4 times a day on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and attempt 100 push-ups, (10 reps each). My overall weight loss goal is 30 pounds, and of course, I know to practice a new diet to see better results.
All I can think is, “I got what I asked for”.
