Geo Wyex
Geo Wyex (b. 1984, New York City) is an artist and educator, based in Rotterdam, NL, working mostly in music, performance, sound and poetry. Their most recent record ATM FM (2020), was recorded in Rotterdam and released through Muck Studies Dept. - a constellational narrative framework, and an imaginary city agent surveying the bottom of low-lying water areas, “looking for stars out of what stinks.” Muck Studies Dept. merges inherited black atlantic funk and folk poetics with techniques of investigative journalism. The project connects mud, water, metal gas, ass, rocks, coins, keys, extractive industry, and sensual expression of belonging to that flood. Research areas include New Orleans, New York, and the Netherlands.

Burns, Every Ocean Hughes, Will Rawls, Constantine Zavitsanos, Colin Self, Sasha Wortzel.
Geo were a Rijksakademie resident in 2015-2016. He is an advisor at De Ateliers (Amsterdam), and teaches theory to BFA students at ArtEZ University for the Arts in Arnhem, NL.
Former teaching positions at graduate level - Dutch Art Institute (DAI), and University of Pennsylvania. He also teaches performance workshops with worldwide shipping. Recent financial support from the Mondriaan Fonds, the Dolf Henkes Prijs (winner), and the Hartwig Art Production Collection Fund. Geo lives and works in Rotterdam NL next to the Maas River. Upcoming solo exhibition at JOAN, Los Angeles, 2024.

When I think about lighting in my shows, I try to animate what is already not being lit by drawing on the lack of light, thinking less in terms of “shadow” and more in terms of a not having, seeking either a dusky quality of light diffusion, an adjacency to focus, or an altering of color. What it means to be next to light, rather than in it, or as its shadow. Like the moment right before a performer steps into the light on a stage, or the moment after. That feeling.
