Sometimes I really want to crash out about all the Dano!Riddler mischaracterisations 🫩 I could prob yap about this for hours but the thing that icks me the most is the “romantic obsession” with Batman?

I mean you do you but I don’t really like it. If you don’t agree with me you don’t have to interact with me. Have a wonderful day :]

As far as I have gathered from the comics and the movie: Batman has been a beacon of hope fot Edward. That man has been traumatised and through shit for most of his life. Technically all his life. Grew up in a shitty orphanage, his only opportunity to get out of there taken away with the rejection by the renewal program, shitty ass accountant job with a boss that uses you etc.

Then there’s Batman; someone who fights against corruption that has been destroying Edward’s life and making him miserable. Edward even writes that “he looks like hope incarnated” and that he is “one of us but bigger” Those descriptions clearly put Batman into a leading position of their movement. A beacon of hope that Edward might be clinging to, yes, but not romantically. This whole “hope incarnated” could come from his potential traumatic religious experience during his time at the orphanage but also just from someone who has been desperate to find something good in his life. Still it is and remains a one sided partnership. Edward puts all those expectations into Batman which he technically fulfills but then personally crushes during the interview scene in Arkham.

It broke his spirit as we can see him crashing out and then later on crying in his cell. His hope rejecting him like the renewal program did, if you catch my drift.

Sure one could this interpret as a “romantic interest” but I see it as someone who puts Batman into a leading position (a figure of hope) and then works towards him for the better of Gotham, to finally get rid of this corruption. To be “bigger” in a way before being thrown into a hole again.

What also severely icks me is the common interpretation of Edwards as an incel. I swear Imma crash out 😭 Anyway I have yapped enough.

My conclusion is that you do you, I don’t rlly care since I just ignore it but honestly I just wish for more morally grey Edward drawings/writings that just show the complexities which he displays in the comics etc. and not write those issues off as merely a romantic obsession with Batman or any other odd stuff.

Started off as wanting to draw him dapper and handsome, ended up with a spiritual successor to my Arkham City fanfic (I don't write fanfic anymore, I'm too busy with art). Thinking the story behind this might be the self-insert is in Arkham City, gets chased by thugs, runs into this alleyway, Riddler comes out of the building he's setting up puzzles in, and fights the thugs (and you get caught in the crossfire), he kills the thugs but you survive.

I put a lot of effort into this but it'll probably get seen by even less people than usual so if you like (emotionally) it, kind words or reblogs would be appreciated (like Eddie I yearn for attention and validation).

While working through my Riddler list, deciding which one to draw next, I stumbled over Young Justice Riddler and he‘s just getting bullied 24/7 💔 So I decided to draw him

I‘m thinking to do Telltale next or Arkham Origins. Haven’t decided yet 😔
