Blocks dotting the landscape, platforms precariously stacked atop each other, mushrooms spanning as far as the eye can see… one could easily mistake it for being the kingdom of Mushrooms (that’s what it was called, right?) as the similarities were striking, to say the least.
So when she’d happen upon what seemed to be denizens of this world, Corrin could only assume one thing.
“… you’re not related to one Super Mario, are you?”
“R-Related...? Oh, Nonono~! I believe you are mistaken!” She chuckled. twirling a strand of her own hair. “W-Well... I guess you could say I do know him I guess you could say...”
“We’re kind of close, you know?”

The Great Giana Sisters was an obvious clone of Super Mario Bros. Very obvious, right down to level layout. Unlike most clones, however, it didn’t suffer any of the problems that usually come with such territory: Programming, music track, graphics, and general playability were all good, and the game received much positive praise from critics. There is a longstanding rumor that the programmers of this game were served a lawsuit by Nintendo for copyright infringement, but both parties have denied that such a lawsuit was ever served. Nintendo did, however, persuade them to stop sales of the game, and they did so not long after its release. As a result, original copies are now rare and somewhat valuable.
Due to the fan love for the game, the developers produced several sequels, but changed the name for at least the first sequel, as well as several elements including character design to avoid any further issues with Nintendo.

New Donk City, huh?
She... Wasn’t quite used to traveling, safe to say. - It was times like this, being around a bunch of different people she didn’t know; where she just felt like she needed to get away for a while. Giana spoke through the phone, exchanging banter with her sister on the phone. “Look, Sis’.” She sighed, rather irritated. “I promise I won’t go far, okay? I know where to look if I get lost... I just well, Need some alone time. I’m not very comfortable in big places like this, you know that don’t you? I mean-..”
Her little ramblings were short lived as she paused of the sight of a large shadow looming above her, That sure wasn’t a plane, to say the least. “S-Sis...? I’ll have to call you back.”
And so she bolted, Following that mysterious looming object in the sky: Bright, sparkly red and sporting what appeared to be a sail: It seemed to be headed right for a little helicopter pad on a nearby building...

“Nobody asked for this. I’m-a-so sorry, Giana…”
“Hide me. I’m scared.” She simply muttered, jumping behind the plumber’s back and slowly shifting her head out to peek.

Here’s some fanart that some people might find a bit surprising of me. If you are a big Nintendo fan (Especially of Mario), you may have heard of The Great Giana Sisters, an old Commodore 64 game that ripped off the original Super Mario Bros.
There have been several games under the Giana Sisters name, but the one I’ve played through, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, is the only one so far that I know of to have its own identity.
It sucks for a multitude of reasons, but at least it has awesome music, my particular favorite being this track. Also the fact that it had a cool gimmick and didn’t rip off Mario this time (Though Punk Giana has Sonic’s homing attack…)
Enough talk, here’s the titular character, Giana! In both her Cute and Punk forms. Pretty happy with this painting, even with the half-assed background, and I urge anyone to pick up the game on any sale you can find. Definitely glad I got it for a reduced price.
