Ratho 4x4 Bush Camp Review
youtube
Additional Information;
Location;
GPS Coordinates: -22.23057,29.0192313
https://goo.gl/maps/hfKyhzjzq3nrnjHz9
Facilities;

Ratho bush camp is located in the far North of South Africa in Limpopo province. It’s around a 6 hours’ drive from Johannesburg and the closest town is Alldays.
The 4x4 bush camp is located on the banks of the Limpopo, with Botswana literally across the river. The camp consists of 4 campsites with shared ablutions.
Campsite 1 is located in the middle of camp. It is a large site adjacent to the main boma. It is close to the ablutions and the least private site. All sites have good shade.
Campsite 2 is a smaller site and located next to the ablutions. It will accommodate 1 off-road caravan or two trailers or tents.
Campsite 3 is quite private with a view of the river and will also accommodate 1 off-road caravan or two trailers or tents.
Campsite 4 is another large site, fairly open with a view of the river. All sites have fire-pits.
The shared ablutions feature 3 basic open-air showers and toilets. There is a fourth bathroom with bath. Hot water is provided with donkeys (fire water heaters). Donkeys are started for you after which you have to keep the fire going yourself. Wood is provided. There is also a shared scullery in the middle of camp.
The camps are unfenced so be careful of wild animals. I had elephants right inside the camp and could hear lions and hyenas in the distance.
Driving is allowed along the banks of the river. Be sure to stay on the South African side.
Other accommodation at Ratho includes a single fenced campsite and chalets. There is also a restaurant and small shop. Firewood is available to purchase.
Ratho is a great stopover to or from Botswana as it’s only a half an hour away from the Pondrift border post. It is also a nice base camp to explore the Mapungubwe area.

Molope bush campsite review - Blouberg Nature Reserve
youtube
Additional Information;
Location;
GPS Coordinates: S22 58 39.1 E29 09 03.0 (Gate)
https://goo.gl/maps/1vh4JbpiYYY7DNWH9
Facilities;

Blouberg Nature Reserve is situated in the lowveld of northern Limpopo around 5 hours drive from Johannesburg. The closest town is Vivo.
This little known 9300ha reserve ranges from mountainous terrain to bushveld with a rich diversity of plant and animal life. Unique features include the tamboti woodland, fig forest, baobabs and the Brak River floodplain.
The Molope Bush Camp consists of 5 private unfenced camping sites between 20 and 40 meters apart from each other.
Campsite 1 is some distance away from the others and is fairly open. It has one large tree in the middle of the site. It wil comfortably fit two offroad caravans, trailers or tents. Maximum six people per site.
Campsite 2 is smaller and has all-day shade. It will accommodate two trailers or tents but two caravans will be a tight fit. There are some sunspots for your solar panels but you’ll have to move them around. Molope camp doesn’t have any electricity.
Campsite 3 is the most private site but furthest away from the ablutions. It will also fit two trailers or tents
Campsite 4 is at the end of the camp. It will also accommodate two trailers or tents. All sites have a bin and firepit.
Campsite 5 is right next to the ablutions and will also fit two trailers or tents.
The ablutions are basic and feature two flushing toilets and showers, one open air. Hot water is provided with a donkey (fire water heater).
The reserve is well suited for self-drive game viewing and has some great hides and waterholes. Animals on the reserve include leopard, cheetah, hyena, buffalo and many different species of antelope.
Whether you’re visiting Blouberg on your way to the Thuli block, Mapungubwe or as a holiday destination, I highly recommend it.

Serendipity Eco Trails Bush Camp review
youtube
Additional Information;
Location;
GPS Coordinates: -24.6167611,28.5990442
https://goo.gl/maps/e728SfvmDajZ1zLF7
Facilities;

Serendipity Eco Trails is situated on a private game farm Tierkloof in the Limpopo province of South Africa. It’s around 2 and a half hours from Johannesburg and the closest town is Mookgopong.
Serendipity is known for its 4X4, Enduro Two Wheeler, Mountain bike and Hiking Trails.
There is a variety of self-catering accommodation options available at Serendepity but I’ll be focussing on the bush camp.
The bush camp has three stands. Stand 1 is the largest site with room to accommodate up to three offroad caravans, trailers or tents. Stands are around 10 – 20 meters apart.
Stand 2 is a smaller site with room for two off-road caravans, trailers or tents.
Stand 3 is also a small site. All sites have good shade throughout the day.
All sites have a scullery with basin, cold water, a light and socket for charging phones. This was not working during my stay.
Each site also has a firepit with braai (bbq) grid, I suggest you bring your own grid though as these aren’t great.
The ablutions are very basic with one open air shower and basin and two flush toilets. Water is heated with a donkey (a fire water heater) but wasn’t working very well at the time of this video.
Bundu camp is reserved for large groups and also has three stands. It wasn’t clear what the difference is between the bundu and bush camps.
There is also the river camp but I’ve excluded it from this review as there was no electricity or hot water as advertised.
The bush camp is probably fine if you’re doing the trails and are happy to rough it but in its current state, I can’t recommend it.

Camping in the far North of South Africa

My camping setup - Conqueror Companion UEV440
youtube
I had a couple of questions about my gear from the camping basics video so today we’ll be looking at my own setup. We’ll do this in two parts; camping with my off-road trailer and then car camping when I’m by myself. In this video we’ll be looking at the off-road trailer. My trailer is a Conqueror Companion, also called a UEV440 in other markets. I usually camp with this when we’re base camping.

Bakgatla Campsite Review - Pilanesberg National Park
youtube
Additional Information;
Location;
GPS Coordinates: -25.1897022, 27.1446824
https://goo.gl/maps/T9VCLcEM7mFgtnua6
Facilities;

Pilanesberg National Park is situated in the North West province of South Africa around 2 and a half hours drive from Johannesburg. It is the 4th largest park in South Africa covering 55 000 hectares. It is set inside an ancient volcano with beautiful rolling ridges and hills.
The Bakgatla caravan and camping site is situated on the edge of Pilanesberg. It offers both caravan and camping stands with and without electricity. The stands are reasonably level and there are a lot of shady trees which you can set up camp under.
There’s no space between you and your neigbour as almost all the stands are adjacent to each other. The camp can get quite crowded over public holidays and weekends. I had the restaurant extractor fan blasting away from early in the morning until late at night as well.
There are 40 non-electrified and 60 electrified campsites and 100 electrified caravan campsites. Campsites are allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis. Campsites have a bins and braai’s (bbq) but a lot of them were not functional at the time of this video. Only some sites have water taps.
Bakgatla has 5 shared ablution blocks. They are serviced daily and are as clean as the staff can possibly get them. At the time of this video, the bathrooms and especially the sculleries need serious maintenance though. Geysers were leaking and on the last day there was no water in the camp!
The camp also has a shop, restaurant, swimming pool and children’s playground.
The camp and most the park is supposed to be accessible to any vehicle. The park tar roads were badly potholed at the time of this video though and some gravel roads washed out, definitely not suited for sedans.
If you’re keen on seeing Pilanesberg wildlife and willing to rough it a little in very close quarters with your neigbours, you can maybe consider Bakgatla. I would suggest visiting in the week and outside of holidays if possible. Campsites 80 to 102 are the the most private you’ll get here. I’m afraid Bakgatla just isn’t for me.

Tambuki 4x4 Campsite Review
youtube
Additional Information;
Location;
GPS Coordinates: -24.9271269, 28.3895681
https://goo.gl/maps/4dwZ84Lz5WF2
Facilities;

Sondela Nature Reserve is in the Waterberg region of Limpopo province. It’s around 2 hours drive from Johannesburg and the closest town is Bela-Bela.
Tambuki 4x4 is a bush camp located at the foot of a rocky outcrop in a secluded section of Sondela. It consists of 5 campsites with shared ablutions, lapa and braai area. It is a bush camp so don’t expect any luxuries or entertainment facilities, those can be found at the main camp.
Site 1 is fairly private but with only afternoon shade
Sites 2 and 3 are adjacent and medium-sized with all-day shade.
Site 4 is a larger site with a large Marula tree for shade.
Sites 2,3 and 4 are ideally suited for larger groups if booked together.
Site 5 is the furthest from other sites but is next to the ablutions.
The sites share a lapa (shelter), firepit and a single braai (bbq). The shared facilities are nestled at the base of the koppie (rocky outcrop).
The ablutions are fairly rustic. There are 2 toilets with basins and 3 open-air showers. The showers aren’t the most private so probably best to arrange turns.
Hot water is provided with a “donkey”, a fire water heater. This one takes ages to get hot so be sure to light the fire early. Wood is provided for the donkey.
Most of Sondela is gravel roads with thick sand tracks to the camp. These tracks are only suited for high-clearance vehicles and off-road trailers or caravans, I would recommend a 4 wheel drive vehicle for towing. Expect ruts and water holes if it’s been raining as well.
For the less adventurous there are many different types of accommodation including a caravan park.
Activities in Sondela include game drives, hiking, mountain biking, quad rides and many more. See their website for more details.

Bontle Campsite Review - Marakele National Park
youtube
Additional Information;
Location;
GPS Coordinates: -24.5307862, 27.495688
https://goo.gl/maps/5U7n7Goqytm
Facilities;

Marakele National Park is in the heart of the Waterberg Mountains in Limpopo province. It is around 3 hours’ drive from Johannesburg and the closest town is Thabazimbi.
Marakele is one of the smaller South African National parks but that doesn’t make it any less spectacular. It is particularly worth visiting for slightly out of the ordinary sightings, including the world's largest breeding colony of the endangered Cape Vulture.
Although the park does have the Big Five it one should not go in hopes of seeing abundant large game, but should rather go for the beautiful landscape and relaxing, yet thrilling bush experience.
Bontle camp consists of 36 camp sites arranged into three clusters with one communal ablution block per cluster. The Rhino and Tsessebe loops have unobstructed views of the Bontle dam and are fairly open with sparse shade.
Rhino loop sites 1, 2, 5 through 10 and Tsessebe 1 through 7 are right on the perimeter and have lovely views of the Bontle dam and surrounds.
The camp is frequented by baboons and monkeys so please don’t feed them or leave your food and garbage out.
Sable loop campsites are more private and shaded under karee, leadwood, bush-willow and black monkey-thorn trees.
All sites have 220v electrity, a light, bin, braai (bbq) and water tap.
The 3 ablution blocks feature 4 hot-water showers, toilets and sculleries each. The ablutions are neat and tidy and are serviced daily.
At Bontle there are no fences, just some short poles planted in the ground a few metres apart to define the camp’s perimeter, and a few small signs telling you not to go any further. This makes the camp feel like part of the surrounding bush and it’s impossible to resist its wilderness charm.
The closeness to wildlife, where there are no fences to act as a barrier between you and them, is very special. Rhino, kudu, impala, wildebeest and ostriches are regular visitors to the camp.
If you want to see the big five, you’ll have to head over to the larger part of the park. The two parts of the park are separated. The roads in Marakele are mostly dirt with some asphalt and paved sections. There is aslo a 4x4-only section.
Going up to the lookout point, is a must do, that is if you aren’t scared of heights and driving with a sheer drop off on the one side. It is tricky negotiating 2 vehicles passing each other with very little space for manoeuvring.
Once you reach the top though, the amazing views make it all worthwhile.
Coming back to my campsite at Bontle is always the highlight of my day though, grabbing a cool drink and relaxing in comfort while the animals come and go.

GPS Coordinates: -25.7068718,28.5119552
https://goo.gl/maps/bnRJA3ZJ4s42

Somabula Nature Reserve is located in Gauteng province around an hour and a half’s drive from Johannesburg and 45 minutes from Pretoria. The closest towns are Rayton or Cullinan.
Somabula offers self-catering chalets, a spacious camping ground and even accommodation in restored ox wagons. Day visitors can also arrange to make use of the hiking trails and Lapa with its braai area.
The campground consists of 7 campsites; Egret and Hadida are the most private and feature their own rustic bathrooms and small sculleries. Egret is the larger of the two and has a solar water heater. None of the sites at Somabula have electricity. Hadida is the most private site but is suited for smaller caravans or trailers.
All the stands have a boma with firepit, water tap and bin.
Loerie and Barbet are also fairly private, are medium sites and share an ablution. The bathrooms are separated though. Loerie will accommodate small caravans or trailers and Barbet is reserved for tents.
Bulbul, Hornbill and Kingfisher share an ablution with two toilets, open-air hot-water showers and a small scullery. Bulbul and Hornbill are adjacent so ideal for larger groups when booked together. They will both accommodate larger caravans.Kingfisher is off to one side and will accommodate smaller caravans or trailers.
Activities in the reserve include game drives, birding, mountain biking and hiking. Most of the 400-hectare reserve is accessible with high-clearance vehicles however there is also a 4x4-only section. The road to the campsites is mostly paved with some gravel sections.

Bendito Ranch Campsites Review
youtube
Additional Information;
Location;
GPS Coordinates: -24.0485836,29.093779
https://goo.gl/maps/M2eeCckLqXp
Facilities;

Bendito Ranch is located in the Waterberg region of Limpopo province around 3 hours drive from Johannesburg. The closest town is Mokopane.
The farm is a great combination of savanna, bushveld, wetlands and very distinctive granite outcrops.
Accommodation consists of a rustic farmhouse, bush campsites and even stables for your horse.
There are 3 bush campsites; Impala, Kudu and Waterbuck;
Kudu is a medium site that will accommodate 2 off-road trailers or tents or 1 off-road caravan. All the sites have a fire pit, bin and water at the ablutions.
Impala is a small site that will accommodate 1 off-road trailer, rooftop or ground tent.
Waterbuck is ideal for larger groups and will easily accommodate 2 off-road caravans. It also has a set of two ablutions.
All the ablutions are Central Kalahari-style open air bucket showers and pit toilets. Water containers are provided to heat water for your shower next to the fire. These work well but you’ll need to handle them with gloves as they get really hot obviously. The bucket can be lowered so you can put in your hot and cold water and then raise it again for a nice hot shower.
The campsites are accessible with high-clearance vehicles and off-road trailers and caravans however there are some sections on the farm that require four-wheel drive.
Activities include game drives, hiking, mountain biking as well as horse riding (with your own horse that is). As for camping, Bendito is one of the most scenic and peaceful spots I’ve been to in a long while.

Mabalingwe Kalahari 4x4 campsite review
youtube
Additional Information;
Location;
GPS Coordinates: -24.8420886,28.0465212
https://goo.gl/maps/jMjwZ2miDLp
Facilities;

Mabalingwe nature reserve is situated in the Waterberg region of Limpopo province. It is around 2.5 hours drive from Johannesburg and the closet town is Bela-bela.
Mabalingwe is all about getting back to Nature – a spectacular landscape allows you to lose yourself in true Waterberg Bushveld with abundant birdlife, stunning indigenous nature and a wide variety of wildlife.
There are many different accommodation options at Mabalingwe ranging from chalets to a caravan park. The Kalahari bush camp is well-suited for the more adventurous nature-loving explorer and for campers that really want to be in the beautiful untouched bushveld that the Waterberg is so well-known for.
There are 7 unfenced stands; Arend and impala are the largest stands with Arend being the most private. Olifant is a medium-sized site. Vlakvark, Kudu and meerkat are small sites and are closer to the ablutions. There is one unnamed site that’s right next to the road, so not that great. A maximum of four adults can occupy each of the stands. There is no electricity, water or bins at the stands. There is a basic braai but you’ll have to bring your own grid. This camp is ideally suited for campers with all of their own gear. The camps are frequented by baboons and monkeys unfortunately so be sure to secure your food, toiletries and garbage, don’t leave anything in your tent. Never feed any animals! All of the Bush Camps are only accessible with 4x4 or high-clearance vehicles.The ablutions feature two flushing toilets, hot water showers and a small outdoor scullery. It takes a little finesse to get the hot water to the right temperature.
Aside from the main paved and gravel roads most of the jeep tracks require a high-clearance vehicle and there are also 4x4-only sections, albeit not all that technical. You’ll get a map at reception and the roads are well sign-posted.
The rest of the reserve is fairly commercial featuring a restaurant, pub, convenience store, fuel station, atm, swimming pools as well as numerous other entertainment facilities.
For the bush lover the main attractions are self-drive game drives, guided walks and night game drives. Here you’ll have the opportunity to spot 4 of Africa’s big 5.
So if you’re looking for secluded camping but not too far from a few luxuries, Mabalingwe truly offers best of both worlds.

Grootfontein Marula Campsite Review
youtube
Additional Information;
Location;
GPS Coordinates: -24.6681682,27.2761293
https://goo.gl/maps/JuDChivLbe42
Facilities;

Grootfontein Nature Reserve is in the Waterberg around 3 hours drive from Johannesburg and he closest town is Thabazimbi. The reserve offers rustic bush lodge-style accommodation, camping, hiking, birding, 4x4 trails,
The Marula 3-stand camp definitely caters to the self-sufficient enthusiast. The stands are decently spaced from each other but fairly small. The entire camp can be rented by one party as well.
You can comfortably fit ground, roottops tents and offroad trailers but you’ll struggle to fit a full offroad caravan. Regardless of the campsite you choose, the views from the koppie is spectacular
There is a nice boma with firepit, chairs and tables and an adjacent small scullery. A nice touch is complementary firewood provided at the boma (enclosure / corral).
There is a lovely little splashpool to provide some reprieve from the heat.
If you’re looking for a hot shower though the bathrooms are fairly basic but neat and clean and provide a flushing toilet, basin and shower. The shower has a paraffin water heater that works surprisingly well. Just be sure when you arrive to get instructions from Jailos or Patrick on how to operate it.
The reserve has many winding 4x4 tracks, nothing too difficult but it isn’t sing-posted and you don’t get a map. This may lead you into many rough cut and dead-end tracks so be prepared for some additional pin stripes to your car.
Although the reserve has Zebra, Giraffe, Kudu, Impala, Waterbuck, Blue Wildebeast, Nyala, Bushbuck and more, animals are skittish, probably because this is a hunting reserve.
As I mentioned though, there are many other activities to keep you well occupied during your stay.
Probably the biggest attractions for me are the spectacular views, these will certainly bring me back here again.
