What does the vertical rectangle with intersecting lines in the shape of an "x" mean?
A rectangle which has an X inside means there is a Unicode character or emoji that is meant to show there, but your system doesn’t support it. This shows as a question mark in a box on iOS.
The most common reason people see an X in a box instead of an emoji is if the sender is using a new emoji, and your phone operating system or app hasn’t been updated to support that emoji yet.
To fix it, check if your phone has any new software updates available. Some phones don’t provide updates for long, and if that is your case, you might not be able to ever see new emojis.
You can tweet emojis to @botmoji on Twitter (even the x in a box) and it will tell you what you’re meant to see.

How to use the 🥺 Pleading Face emoji
Lots of phones don’t yet support the pleading face emoji because they are running outdated apps or operating systems.
Even if the pleading emoji doesn’t work on your phone, you can use it by copying and pasting it from here:
🥺
^ just above here is the pleading face emoji.
It might show as an X or an empty box if you are on an old system, but when sent to a newer phone it will show correctly at the other end. Just because you have an old phone, tablet or computer doesn’t mean you can’t use this new emoji in messages, tweets or comments like YouTube or TikTok.
Another option instead of copy and paste is to use the emoji keyboard on your phone or computer, if you are running a recent update.
You can copy and paste any emoji on the web, or try to keep on top of new operating system updates so you can do this straight from your phone or laptop.

What does a question mark in a box mean
A question mark inside a box means there is an emoji you cannot see, usually because your phone software is out of date.
New emojis are released every year and because these send as Unicode characters not pictures, your phone system software (iOS or Android) or the app you are using needs to add support for new emojis for them to work.
If you see a question mark in a box, try updating your phone software and you might see the emoji!
