You'd be surprised. Both Amuro AND Kamille both also crash coursed just like Shinji, even less so in the case of Amuro since they just kept throwing him at enemy soldiers and all he had was a manual.

In terms of trained Gundam pilots, that would be Kou Uraki and Shiro Amada who were formally and properly trained, same with Bernard Wiseman.

For the most part, most Gundam MCs are in the same situation Shinji's in in one way or another with some justification for their prowess that doesn't involve training.

When it comes to the Getter Team, yeah, early versions just operate on instinct and pilot on the fly and get their training in later. Gou Ichimonji is the prime example of that where he'd never piloted before but managed to take out a kaiju in his first fight because he was reckless enough for it to work.

And the closest to Shinji's situation was Simon from Gurren Lagann as both were reluctant pilots and Simon also had abysmal self esteem starting out. Not surprising considering both were made by Gainax. Heck, in Simon's case, all he had was headbutting the enemy for the most part starting out until they got Gurren.

I feel like as far as comparing Shinji to other mech pilots in terms of ability the main thing is that Shinji had like two weeks of crash course digital military training and fights most of his battles just as an angry teenager given a doomsday weapon that uses knives, halberds and it’s bare hands to kill Kaiju.

That means comparing him to characters from Gundam or FMP is moot cause their professional soldiers, maybe the only fair comparison is to the Getter team?
