I HELPED WITH MY FIRST DELIVERY!!!
AHHHHHHH
Okay, so I didn’t catch the baby, but I acted as a human stirrup for a first time mom, and it was amazing. A nurse even gowned me as the delivery was starting and it was the first time I’ve ever felt even remotely like a doctor. The delivery was perfect. She only pushed for 7 minutes, didn’t tear at all, and gave birth to a healthy baby boy. The OB was shocked at how perfectly everything went.
AND since it’s only me, the OB, and a pediatric hospitalist, I asked if I could watch the pediatrician do the exam on him, and not only did she let me watch, she let me do the exam myself after doing the real exam and showing me what to do! It was SO AWESOME!!! He’s such a little cutie ❤
I think I liked what the pediatrician did better than the OB, but everything was just amazing and I’m on cloud 9 right now. The OB says there won’t be much else tonight, so I might not even see her before I leave in the morning, but I’m here for the rest of the night just in case something does happen.

Hiya! I'm a medical student in the UK and would like to ask about research opportunities - if that hasn't been asked. Apart from intercalating, how do you get opportunities? The ones I saw online require you to hv a project idea + supervisor but I'm too inexperienced to come up with my own.. ideally would like to be involved in an ongoing resesrch team for exposure. Any advice on how to go about this? Thank you so much, I've been following you since before med sch and you've always been helpful!
Hi! Aww I’m so glad I’ve been helpful! <3 I never actually did any research opportunities before intercalating - I wish I had, but I’ve always found the course very hard and didn’t want to take on too much. So, I may not be the best person to ask.
However, I think I know of people who’ve got into it by basically being keen and contacting lots of their favourite doctors and asking. A lot of nice, not-too-busy doctors will be happy if an enthusiastic med student contacts them asking about research opportunities in their area. After all, most of them are passionate about their specialty and want more people to be interested in it.
It will be better if it’s a doctor who knows who you are, eg. if you did some placements with them or something. Or, go up to them at the end of a lecture. I’ve heard it’s better to find them in person than email, because it’s easy for them to ignore or forget to reply to an email, but having you there right in front of them it’s harder for them to do that! Even if they’re not directly in research themselves, they could put you into contact with their colleagues who would be happy to take on med students. x

Do you have any tips for studying with clinical/biological depression? Everyone talks about studying with environmentally caused depression, but mine will never go away without medicine. I can only treat the symptoms. Before it was my perfectionism, OCD, and anorexia (I have to be discipline), that drives me like a robot. After years, I swung the other direction and crashed
I’m really sorry you’re going through this. Honestly, although I really want to, I’m not sure I can answer this well. I have struggled with mental health sometimes, but it’s usually periodic and not something I have to deal with all the time. Therefore, I think trying to answer this question would be very fake of me.
Obviously a big part will be to make sure you see a doctor regularly and are on the right meds +/- therapy for you to function ok. But beyond that, I don’t really have much experience to give. I hope some of my followers might be able to give their tips from their experience? x

What motivates me to work for my exams
-To get the grades to get into medical school: I have 3 offers that I worked so hard to get, it would be so backward of me to not work for this final stage!
-Med school part deux: the incredible people I will meet at med school, students, lecturers, patients, and how much I will learn from them
-To have the BEST goddamn gap year. If I do well in these exams I won’t have to retake any or reapply (if I didn’t get the grades I would have to apply to a different degree, or apply in 2019 if I retook which NO WAY IN HELL is going to happen if I have anything to say about it) and I’ll have the liberté de l’ésprit to enjoy myself and do all the things I want to do:
-Learn to drive, go to many concerts, get a job, focus on my own personal growth for a bit, get a van and drive around my friends to cute spots and picnic there
-To have the best summer! Holidays with parents and friends, and just relaxing in the sun, knowing I worked so hard to get amazing grades and now it’s my me time. I wanna go to the beach!!
-More stuff in my gap year: to be free enough (aka not studying hard core anymore!) to help my sister with her GCSEs and just generally pass on all the wisdom that I didn’t have at her age
-To start back up my hobbies- I want to start sewing and editing clothes bc I miss my sewing machine, and I want to learn to skateboard/pennyboard, and maybe join a gym
-To move on from A levels and start learning other things: I want to go to lectures at my local uni, and read oh so many books! Like Bad Pharma by Ben Goldacre and learn about the pharmaceutical industry in relation to med, and how research works, and about biological mechanisms like how cancer works and how the treatments work!
-To go on a massive piss up with the lads on June 20th (aka the last day of my exams) (Or maybe the 21st if Im too tired bc I have 2 exams that day)!!!
So I’ve just gotta hold tight til then, it’s really not so long! It’s 3 months until my exams are over, squat, which comes to a meager 1.276595744 % of my life by the time June comes around.
Considering the massive ways in which these A levels will affect my life, I’d say going for this last push will really be worth it.

As I get older I’m finding that a lot of the “intellectuals” I used to admire are actually just condescending and pretentious. And also realizing how much more important it is to be present, considerate, and empathetic because nobody really knows what they’re talking about and anyone who claims to know everything about anything is feeding you bs.

2018 moods
you’ve been waiting to read your new book all day, finally getting to sit down with it and a cup of tea. soon you’re lost in its content, hearing only the sound of pages being turned gentle rain outside.
you’re laughing so hard tears being to form in your eyes, you’re stomach already hurting. no matter how hard you and your friend try, you both just can’t seem to stop.
it’s early, way too early in the morning, the sun hasn’t even come up yet. still, you’re already awake, seemingly before the rest of the world. everything is quiet and calm as you calmly breathe in and breathe out, ready to start the day off right.
“great work!” the little note on your essay says. you’ve worked so, so hard for this, and finally it has paid off. instantly, you begin to smile, newfound motivation radiating off of your beaming face. you can do this, everything you set your mind to is possible.
sometimes it seems like you can get lost in their eyes forever, forgetting the world around you. nothing exists, and even if it does, nothing comes close to being as important as this moment and the happiness you feel.
