How would I go about asking a pixiv artist if I could post their work in Japanese?

Thank you for the ask! I’m glad that others want to get into contact with the artists as well.

Ideally, you’d want to be very polite and use keigo language, but..uh…I’m not very comfortable with keigo. So I use very polite normal language, and they all seem fine with that.

This is going to be long, so:

If it isn’t obvious enough, the blanks are where you put the artist’s name, since addressing people as “you” in Japanese is a bit rude if you’ve never met and you’re asking a favor.

Translation:

Hello, my name is [[YOUR NAME].

I think that your illustrations are very cool/cute, and would like to introduce them on a blog site called tumblr. Here is my blog: [blog url]

I really like [series/ship name] and would like to reprint these illusts: [illust url(s)].

If you grant me permission to do so, I will most definitely add a link to your profile and to the original illustration URL. Of course, I won’t edit them or claim them as my own.

Also, if you give permission, I would greatly appreciate if you would specify whether or not I need to contact you again in the future when I would like to reprint.

Replies have included “thank you for being polite” and “thank you for calling my art cute” and “your Japanese is good, don’t worry”, so I like to think that artists tend to take this message quite well.

If you want to translate a manga, just add そして、よければ漫画も翻訳したいです。to the end of the reprint paragraph. and you might want to take out the final disclaimer about not being good at Japanese because, well, you’re offering to translate.

Don’t worry about getting rejections; about 30% of artists say “thank you for the message, but please don’t reprint my works.”

Guess who can’t let go of that scene and how it seems to parallel Sakuma’s one?

Quotes in green are from Sakuma… sort of as one is a bit from the Imperial Rescript to Soldiers and Sailors but it’s hinted Sakuma was thinking at it when he prepared himself so I guess it fits.

And well, technically Miyoshi never said ‘prepare yourself’, it was said just by Sakuma in the manga but it fit so the writing is red and green to imply it’s a thought they shared.

Oh and originally the ending picture was meant to be this one…

…but I thought it would work better as a parallel showing Sakuma with his eyes open about to kill himself, so as to match Miyoshi with his eyes open about to die, then Sakuma with his eyes closed still preparing himself to death…

Last but not least, very, very, very likely Miyoshi chose that expression not due to Sakuma (the story is based on something Maki chose in the novel and in the novel it’s possible Maki never got to meet Sakuma) but because if he were to look so calm they would assume he died instantly and didn’t have the time to do anything as Bauer will remark to Wolff.

In short that expression is a disguise… (though a panicked one or a grief striken one would work as well as they would imply he  was too preoccupied with his own impending death to think at doing anything else).

Okay, since this is Miyoshi’s month and there’s no official scanlations for the manga yet and I couldn’t survive without knowing exactly what was going in the extra bits of the manga version of “Coffin” I took the TOTALLY INSANE decision to track down all the kanji used, placed them inside google translate and made a tentative scanlation version of the new bits.

THIS IS BY NO MEANS MEANT TO REPLACE THE OFFICIAL SCANLATIONS which are beautiful and need to be supported.

I’m not even sure if google translation translated everything okay by the way.

It’s just that Miyoshi is dying here and… and… *go wails in a corner*

By the way this translation was also made possible thanks to @kyuukancorbie who explained me what the first three pages were supposed to mean.

Oh and the first picture is the beautiful art Nito Subaru drew to commercialize the new chapter… which is available here by the way.
