"these researchers published a paper on something that literally any of us could have told you 🙄" ok well my supervisors wont let me write something in my thesis unless I can back it up with a citation so maybe it's a good thing that they're amplifying your voice to the scientific community in a way that prevents people from writing off your experiences as annecdotal evidence
#also occasionally things that make sense and are conventional wisdom are wrong!#its important to test shit in a real controlled way#especially if you're going to go on to study it further#also often papers will have other findings within them that elaborate or ask more interesting questions#but its important to first establish that the premise is true and that the measurement system you came up with actually works
