Every time we return to early Dracula I remember Mina is such a mood. She starts out like 'this place RULES it's got GHOSTS and GRAVEYARDS. A dead guy washed up on the beach yesterday and I wrote about it in my diary.'

Vampire is the only serbian word (vampir / вампир) that has made its way into other languages and this is funny because today we preceive vampires as this undead creatures coming from nobility and the first serbian vampire was Sava Savanovic, who was Just Some Guy️, or the first and most documented case of vampirism that sparked mass hysteria - Petar Blagojevic (also serbian), who was also Just Some Guy™️.

Oh this is 100% going on the tbr 😌
Dear goth lit/horror side of Tumblr, I am there to recommend you Melmoth the Wanderer by Charles Maturin, a gothic novel about a man who sold his soul to the devil with one condition: he can receive his soul back if he finds someone else ready to sell their soul the same way. It has great atmosphere, is interesting and influenced many great authors, such as Edgar Poe and Oscar Wilde (who was author's relative). Also the author was an Anglican clergyman, so be ready to pious thoughts and some criticism towards Catholicism (I am not even catholic but it made me feel sorry about them to be honest).
I noticed that this book is rather obscure and I hope my recommendation will be useful to someone.

I just finished it today and it was genuinely such a fun read!
no but the premise of The Castle of Otranto is so funny. a guy gets squished by a giant helmet. this causes an attempted divorce, an attempted murder, the discovery of a long lost prince, a successful but also erroneous murder and a wedding. The helmet also ominously floats outside of the window sometimes. in case you talk shit.
