The mothman
Short story
Here is a 499-word story about the Mothman:
The red eyes peered from the darkness, reflecting the car's headlights like two glistening pools of blood. The creature stood taller than any man, with massive wings that unfurled from its back like strips of weathered leather. It did not move as the car approached.
Mark slammed on his brakes, his pulse racing. "What is that?"
His girlfriend Amy squinted. "It kind of looks like an angel."
The towering creature began to stride toward them, its footsteps thumping heavily on the deserted road. Mark shrank back in his seat. This was no heavenly visitor.
As the thing drew closer, street lights illuminated its body - humanlike, but gray-skinned and hairless. Its wings sputtered open again, revealing no feathers but rather thin membranes stretched taut between bony appendages. The face was at once both man and insect, with sunken eyes peering from beneath a regal, statue-esque brow.
"We should go," Mark said, fumbling for the gear shift. But before he could pull away, the creature was upon them, placing its spindly hands on the hood of the car. Amy shrieked.
"Do not fear me," it spoke, its voice clear yet ringing with a strange resonance, like voices echoing down a well.
Mark froze, his breath catching in his throat. "What are you?"
"I am the eyes that see what you cannot. The wings that carry warnings unheard."
"Warnings?" Amy whispered.
The creature's gaze swept between them. "This region is in grave danger. You must convince your people to leave before nightfall."
Mark stared. "Leave...to where?"
"Anywhere to escape the coming fire. If you stay, all will perish."
"What...what's going to happen?" Amy asked.
The tall figure lifted its face to the sky, as if listening. "The disaster cannot be stopped. But lives can still be spared." Its eyes lowered, meeting theirs with piercing intensity. "Heed my warning and tell others to flee. Leave this place while there is still time!"
With that, the creature unfurled its massive wings with a thunderous sweep and launched itself into the darkness. Mark and Amy watched mutely as its shadow disappeared amongst the stars.
"What...was that thing?" Amy whispered.
Mark shook his head. "I have no idea." He gazed at the town in the distance, its lights twinkling innocently beneath the gathering clouds. His hands tightened on the steering wheel.
"But I think we need to get out of here. Now."
