Final Outcome
The total amount of written research I did on a google doc was nine pages long, and my over all goal was to tell the history of a heavy hitter franchise that is associated with the company that I’d like to work with. The fact that I had the opportunity to make a book that is jammed packed with information on something that I’ve grown to love brings me a lot of joy. If I had allotted myself more time, I think I would have incorporated some elements of augmented reality to give people little hidden nuggets of other information and Easter Eggs (Like the door opening animation from the first three games), memes and other in-jokes that are among the fan base. Over all though, I really enjoyed this project because I could dive into something that I’m so passionate about.

The beginnings of my fan book. I wanted to take elements that are familiar to fans and try to put them inside the book. I’d say the over all process of this book was very intuitive, figuring out what felt right for the book.
My objective though, was to try and fit as much fanservice as I could.

Final Outcome
I found that this project was actually really enjoyable. We see packaging on a regular basis, and I think its a great challenge to try and transform something to suit sustainability and to be more inclusive. I think in terms of mine, there could be a few more changes. One. Make the packaging more compact, as this version is very “brick” like in terms of size and width. Another thing too would be to replace to drawer with more of a sliding slot to eliminate the width issue, and to make bigger wheels with more space between them so that you don’t have so much difficulty spinning them to suit the week. Still, when I decided to make an alternative form of birth control packaging, I set out to do one thing, and that was to eliminate the pointless little things that get thrown out the day you open you packaging (Stickers, vinyl sleeve, info paper), and take those elements and try to give it utility that suits all those elements needs, and I feel like I succeeded in that regard. Over all, this assignment was quite a bit of fun! I’d love to go back and make a second version with the improvements listed above.

Painting day! I chose more of an orangey-peach because I wanted to make my packaging more gender neutral. I looked at other birth control packaging like Yasmin and I wanted to avoid the “totally 90s” aesthetic and the hyper feminine aesthetic. It’s a little inspired by no name brand, but I also chose to make it look a little more “homemade” because I think it grants the packaging a little more charm. People already have to deal with clinical things on a regular basis, so why not make it a little “homemade”? I also used a small grid with a pencil and rule to include the months and writing.

I chose to use paper to cover the cardboard for two reasons. One, to cover most of the materials corners, just to make it more aesthetically pleasing, and because paper is recyclable, keeping sustainability in mind.

I continued to build my package, mainly focusing on the wheels that would have the days of the week and the drawer that is meant to hold the birth control pills.

January 31st I started to build my prototype packaging, Along the way I decided to change it a little, my removing the secondary piece, so it wouldn’t fold out like a book anymore, eliminating the piece of paper that would hold all of the information on that particular form of birth control that one would be using. I decided that everything that to be in one piece.

Packaging Comparisons 2
This is a soap set that I got for Christmas, and there’s a few key things I don’t like it about. The overall aesthetics kind of remind me of my grandmas old couch, but also the typeface in gold doesn’t mesh very well with the flower pattern making it hard to read in the light.
Course, keeping all of your items in a single use plastic shell doesn’t really inspire anything, and the cover on the body butter jar was very hard to remove, as there’s no edge that you can tear off from it. In addition, I feel like the ribbon is just added fluff, and unless you like to collect craft supplies for later use, thats going into the garbage.
It’s just not very inspired, it doesn’t seem to take disability into account and its kind of ugly.

Packaging Comparisons
I collect dolls as a hobby, so this is an example of my LOL - OMG Doll that I bought a while ago from work. While I don’t have all of the packaging, the main premise for these dolls is the “unboxing” experience which is supposed to give kids another layer of excitement as they remove the packaging and pieces for the doll. The box itself reflects the over all aesthetic well. The main thing I like about it though, is MGA has given you the chance to save the packaging as a small play set or if you’re a collector, it gives it could make it more ‘attractive’ to other collectors or just as decoration. It adds a whole layer of interaction through the fact that it can play music with the record that it comes with it.
My main issue with it is that the small packages that come with the clothes and accessories inside are single use plastic packaging and you can’t reseal them again. (They’re supposed to look like fancy clothes bags). Another thing to, is if you’re a doll collector who doesn’t safe the packaging or keeps the doll in it, it pretty much winds up in the garbage or recycling anyway.

Final Submissions

So in terms of final submission. We were told on presentation day that our teams design was chosen for the campaign, with the suggestion that we make things a little more PG. So, after some collaboration, we agreed to do some re-shoots at the local public library and use their bathrooms for the setting. We chose to use examples of missing socks, toilet paper and a cloth to emphasize what people do when they have no access to hygiene products during their cycles, and I think these images really drove home what can happen. I ended up mocking up all of our content for Tara to look over and see what designs she liked because I knew that our content was well made, and I wanted the give the client the choice between them all, as this campaign is very much of her won making. These are the examples of the ones she chose.

So, when we were given this assignment, I came in cautiously optimistic because my experience in the past with group work has been mostly negative. However, I’ve always wanted to work in an environment where I could work collaboratively with other people, with that collaboration leading into efficient work amongst ourselves. I’m happy to report that this group was fantastic to work with, and I appreciate Tenneille taking the reigns and letting us do what we do best. While Katrina and Teanna had their core roles in style scaping and photography, I was a little more all over the place between illustration, our customer/donation avatars, creating the power point and creating mockups. For the avatars, I wanted them to be regular people, so we as a group sat down and began listing off potential traits, after that, I wanted to take the traits we listed and translate them into an image so that on presentation day, Tara could potentially get an idea of who we were aiming for. Carol being the confident woman who works and is a busy mother, and Steven being a goofy but caring father to two daughters. I chose the mockups, and I picked the sign, the bus stop and the door poster because I wanted to give Tara an idea of what they’d look like within a public setting. Given that Medicine Hat has bus stops similar to that of the mockup, and the door poster looking similar to what would appear downtown, I chose them because they were familiar enough for me to visualize these posters in Medicine Hat. As for the Powerpoint, largely it was the aesthetic I was gunning for, something fun, something a little more casual but had a similar color palette to our style scape with the more netural reds and greys. All in all, this turned out well, and I feel that as a group, we worked well together.
Over all, 22 hours were invested into the project, no money was spent on my end.
