Title: Blue Wildebeest Skull with Flowers

This piece, rendered in pencil and watercolor with gold leaf elements, features a blue wildebeest skull, an emblem of my South African heritage, adorned with vibrant flowers on its horns. The juxtaposition of the skull and flowers symbolizes the delicate balance between life and death, resilience and beauty. The composition is framed by a gold leaf triangle, drawing focus to the skull while adding a sense of harmony and balance. The triangle, a symbol of strength and stability, represents the unyielding connection between my past and present.

Originally, my intention was to create minimalist geometric shape compositions. However, as the work evolved sporadically, it transformed into this more symbolic and intricate piece. Through this artwork, I explore themes of identity, transformation, and the cyclical nature of life.

Jackson Pollock's shift from Thomas Hart Benton's representational style to his iconic "drip" paintings marked a significant evolution. Initially influenced by Benton's themes, Pollock moved toward abstraction, focusing on personal expression. His "drip" technique, which involved pouring and splattering paint, eliminated traditional imagery and embraced spontaneity, reflecting his interest in Jungian psychology and the subconscious. This approach aimed to capture raw emotion, inviting viewers to engage on an emotional level and challenging conventional art norms. This piece is part of the museum's Italian, Spanish, and French Paintings collection, acquired through the bequest of John Ringling in 1936. The outdoor setting, with rugged terrain and an overcast sky, enhances the dramatic intensity. Personal Experience with Color in Architecture

Color in architecture profoundly impacts human psychology and emotions, a fact supported by scientific studies. I recently visited a hospital with calming blue tones in patient rooms, where the cool hue and low intensity created a serene atmosphere, reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation. This aligns with research indicating blue tones can lower blood pressure and heart rate. Conversely, a fast-food restaurant I visited used vibrant red and yellow hues, their high saturation stimulating appetite and energy, leveraging their psychological effect of increasing excitement. Studies show red hues can elevate heart rates and increase hunger, ideal for eateries aiming to maximize turnover. For my ideal living space, I would choose a color scheme incorporating earthy green hues and soft brown tones, promoting tranquility and stability. Thoughtful color choices in architecture enhance daily life, demonstrating how hue, tone, and saturation influence our well-being.

JOURNALING Principles of Design (Chapter 4)

Unity and Variety Unity and variety are crucial in creating a cohesive artwork that also maintains visual interest. Unity refers to the sense of harmony and wholeness, achieved through the consistency of elements, while variety adds interest by introducing differences. Imagine walking into a room where all the furniture and decor match perfectly in style and color; this creates unity. However, adding a few vibrant pillows or a unique piece of art adds variety, making the room more engaging and less monotonous. In everyday life, a well-coordinated outfit with a pop of color, like a bright scarf or unique accessory, demonstrates unity and variety working together.

Balance Balance involves distributing visual weight in an artwork to create a sense of stability. This can be symmetrical, where elements are mirrored on either side, or asymmetrical, where different elements have equal visual weight. Picture a perfectly balanced see-saw, with children of the same weight on either side; this is symmetrical balance. Now imagine an abstract painting with a large red circle on one side balanced by several smaller blue squares on the other; this is asymmetrical balance. An example from daily life could be a well-arranged bookshelf, where heavy, large books on one side are balanced by a decorative vase and smaller books on the other.

Emphasis and Subordination Emphasis and subordination guide the viewer’s eye to the most important parts of the artwork, creating a focal point. Emphasis makes an element stand out, while subordination supports it by keeping other elements in the background. Think of a stage performance where a spotlight shines on the lead actor, making them the center of attention (emphasis), while the supporting cast remains in softer light (subordination). In everyday scenarios, a brightly colored flower in the center of a garden full of green foliage stands out, drawing your attention first before you notice the other plants.

Directional Forces Directional forces refer to the paths created within an artwork that guide the viewer’s eye movement. These can be actual or implied lines that lead you through the composition. Imagine walking down a winding path in a park that naturally guides your steps; similarly, directional forces in art guide your gaze. An artist might use a series of curved lines to lead your eye from the foreground to the background of a painting. In life, road signs and markings create directional forces, ensuring that drivers follow the intended route safely.

Repetition and Rhythm Repetition and rhythm involve the repeated use of elements to create a sense of movement and harmony. Repetition refers to the use of the same element multiple times, while rhythm is the visual tempo set by the pattern of repetition. Picture a row of palm trees lining a beach; the repetition of the trees creates a visual rhythm that is soothing and structured. This principle is evident in music as well, where repeated beats create rhythm. In art, a series of repeating arches in a cathedral can create a rhythmic flow that guides your gaze upwards and towards the altar.

Scale and Proportion Scale and proportion refer to the size of elements within an artwork and their relationship to each other. Scale describes the size of an object in relation to another, while proportion refers to the size relationship between parts of a whole. Think of a dollhouse, where everything is a miniature version of real-life objects, maintaining accurate proportions but at a smaller scale. In art, an artist might use an oversized figure to convey importance, as in ancient Egyptian art where pharaohs are depicted much larger than other figures. In everyday life, the human body itself is a perfect example, with proportionate limbs and features that create a harmonious whole.

This dynamic is especially poignant given the historical context, two Black athletes before a predominantly white audience, highlighting themes of racial tension and triumph. Writing a Self-Portrait

As a 28-year-old white South African male, my perception of art is deeply influenced by my personal journey. Having left my country due to political and economic unrest in search of a brighter future, I carry with me a sense of resilience and determination. As an architect, I bring a critical eye for detail and design, often viewing art through the lens of structure and composition. My love-hate relationship with architecture fuels my appreciation for creativity and innovation in all forms. Outside of work, I find solace and joy in physical pursuits, such as hitting the gym and practicing jiu-jitsu with a supportive community. My unwavering willpower and positive outlook on life shape my perception, infusing each encounter with art with optimism and hope.

In the hallway of my home stands a cherished piece of art: two intricately carved wooden giraffes. Each crafted from a solid piece of wood, they exude a sense of timeless elegance and African craftsmanship and are perfectly imperfect. The unknown sculptor's meticulous attention to detail is evident in every curve and contour, hinting at hours of patient dedication. As I gaze upon them each day, they evoke a profound sense of nostalgia, transporting me to distant memories and adventures. Their presence serves not only as decorative adornments but also as silent storytellers, inviting reflection and contemplation. Introductions/First Artworks Discussion

1. A fact about me is that I hold a master's degree in architecture and that I am an immigrant from the country of South Africa.

Upon my initial encounter with the piece, I found its composition reminiscent of a trophy display, a perception largely influenced by the pixelation of the image. In my interpretation, the trophies appeared meticulously arranged to convey a sense of dominance, suggesting that the exhibitor seeks to assert their competitiveness and establish a position of power.

I was able to find out that there is some mystery surrounding the creator of the piece, James Hampton was actually a janitor by profession and worked on his masterpiece over 14 years in secrecy, stowed away in his garage.

Despite the sheer magnitude and striking nature of his artistic arrangement, as I had mentioned in above, Hampton never gave an explanation of the piece, leaving it open for interpretation.

The sculpture is made from incredibly humble materials, materials that one would not necessarily associate with fine art. Materials such as gold and silver aluminum foil, colored Kraft paper, plastic sheets, paperboard, and glass was utilized in its creation.

The piece is infused with deep religious symbolism, due to Hampton being deeply religious.

After Hamptons death, his magnificent work of art was discovered by his landlord. The piece was initially slated to be demolished but was saved and then later acquired by the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

3. My perception of the piece remains steadfast; I continue to regard the emotions I initially felt as valid responses to this artwork, even after conducting research on both the piece and the artist. I perceive Hampton's humble societal role, intertwined with his profound religious convictions, as the driving force behind this unapologetic and magnificent display of religious symbolism. However, rather than merely showcasing trophies, I now view it as an expression of Hampton's profound devotion to God, brought to life through his exceptional talent for sculpting.
