anyone who says the blue beetle movie is a basic origin story is lying to you. in a normal superhero movie they get at least a day or two of fun hijinks—sticky fingers, zappy powers, quippy one liners—meanwhile jaime reyes over here is speedrunning the worst 48 hours i’ve ever seen anybody experience.

(one) of my favorite things about rina is the extent to which they truly see each other. all of each other. ricky was gina’s biggest supporter during season 4, he was astonished by her ambition, and was so determined to get things right with her that he didn’t want gina to believe, even for a second, that he wasn’t rooting for her becoming the star he’s always known her to be. her intensity and her drive has never overwhelmed him or put him off. ricky knows that she was meant for performing, meant to play the lead, we see that as far back as in season 2, when ricky votes for her feather duster routine.

that moment seemed so miniscule to me then (pre-rina shipper), but gina had already vouched for ricky’s acoustic song idea in the first season and this was a part of their full circle moment, this was a part of ricky and gina always seeing how much talent the other has. gina has always been intrigued by ricky, which developed into her being impressed by ricky, seeing the qualities that he didn’t see in himself yet.

and we could definitely tread on gina herself saying that with ricky, she feels seen and known, which is so integral when you look back to where gina started in season one. she was so resistant to letting people in, to being unapologetically goofy, to going that extra mile to take what she wanted, because she didn’t want people to be offput. then comes ricky bowen, who cuts through all of that, sees gina in full, and makes her feel understood.

then comes ricky bowen, who showed up for her time and time again. ricky is amazed by her and he didn’t tell her that he loved her as some “hail mary” for her to stay in salt lake, he said it so that gina would take that with her when she left. ricky bowen had to make sure that gina knew that she was his person, the girl who showed him the good when ricky himself couldn’t find it, ricky bowen had to make sure gina understood that what they have is home to him.

actions speak louder than words for gina. ricky knows that and spent all of season 4 showing her that there was never any question over them being real. they’re forever.

not to b rude or anything but ej literally doesnt have closure of gina breaking up with him which means that portwell isnt bones and they still have feelings for each other

this is.. just very odd. ej is in college and working four jobs, the least of his active concerns are the definitive break up between gina and him. the entire point of him saying that there are things he would have done differently was to emphasize / parallel ricky (the literal main character of hsmtmts,) not missing his chance to do things the right way. his way.

as far as pw not being bones, that’s just wrong? gina porter and ricky bowen are in love. their entire narrative frames so much of this final season because they were destined to come back to each other (i.e the hat, ricky saying “full stop” during love you forever, their animal shelter date where ricky sang the theme song of her favorite childhood show to her, just so she knew he would never make fun of her, etc etc) where does gina having unresolved feelings for elt*n play into any of that?

pw was and always will be a midgame ship! ej is in college and rina basically has their own personal love letter in season 4, so if you want to discourse about that, this isn’t the blog for you.

i’m still just thinking about the juxtaposition of ricky and nini and ricky and gina. it’s universally known at this point that ricky was clinging to nini because she was secure and familiar, all stemming from his rejection of change (i.e calling nini his home and her feeling pressured by it,) and rejection of how they were growing apart. now compare that to gina, who was deterred by ricky not putting up more of a fight over her going to new zealand.

gina wanted that side of ricky. she actively seeked the part of him that loved selfishly, that would fight for her, no matter what. it gets even sweeter when ricky sings “you and i’ve become a sacred kinda home” during love you forever later on, because that’s the ricky that gina knows and loves. that’s ricky’s journey from making a last ditch effort for comfort to essentially saying that, no matter where they end up, his home is with gina.

it’s all about that distinction of projection versus mutualism. ricky confidently said that he was saying that he loved gina first because he knew exactly what he felt and he knew that he had gotten the chance to prove that he was everything gina thought he was and more. ricky is devoted to her and committed to them, with no distance being able to hinder that fact, and gina nodding in confirmation after that line furthers the point that, the both of them have always understood each other, right from the start.

these two are just.. unmatched.

i told myself that i wouldn’t be posting anymore until i’d grasped a cohesive commentary on this season in its entirety, but i just can’t shake how much i hated the cheating story beats. big red and seb only having very minor roles in season 3 absolutely established the same rift that made the redlyn/seblos breakups palatable (i was never the biggest fan of them either way,) but rift ≠ cheating.

with ashlyn finding a heart in maddox, i’m more understanding, but her breakup with big red could’ve still achieved that level of mutualism and solidarity without jeopardizing his friendship (?) with carlos. i guess because there’s never been a particularly big emphasis on their friendship, the writers ran with it, but it was honestly pretty jarring?

i don’t know, i guess that with the distance season 3 made a point of emphasizing, i figured they would find a way to break them up without resorting to explicit cheating. the same thing goes for seb and carlos and honestly, it’s just drastically out of character for these two to be having this sort of conflict.

it would’ve been better to scrap it for them, especially when they still ended up together? at first, i thought they were setting it up that carlos would be single for a while / come to peace with his first heartbreak, but no, seb just sang to him and they were fine again so! it was just kind of odd and disney needs to stop pulling out cheating plots everytime couples need to split!

they wrote two major breakups on this show without any sort of plot device like that so i feel like it added nothing to the season.

and while we’re here i’d like to point out that ricky bowen’s progression with the words “i love you,” makes the entirety of this show feel beyond worth it. it’s an encapsulation of his arc and it means the world that ricky not only told gina he loved her first (multiple times through that beautiful song too,) but had the courage to say it to his friends, his parents, and miss jenn just because he still had the time to.

ricky beat those running away allegations by baring his heart fully, and baring it to everyone, not just gina specifically. the amount of transparency he consecutively displayed this season (admitting he was intimidated by mack, admitting that he felt tired of losing people with ej,) rather than shutting down and shutting everyone out, is a prospect to just how far he’s come.

seeing him actively seek guidance and just admit that he needed to find the best response to everything going on, but was simply too overwhelmed to find it on his own, meant everything. i’m so proud of him and i’m so happy to see that he’s truly come full circle.
