context for mdzs peeps who know nothing about smosh: smosh is a production company that posts different kinds of videos on youtube. shourtney is the ship name of shayne and courtney, two cast members who have been working there for a decade and started together. they were shipped for literal years, very very intensely but they always said they were friends. they eventually did start dating but kept it on the DL, and no one knew until last year when they posted wedding photos on the April 1st. it kind of broke the fandom

Another thing I appreciate so much more about Her private life now that I've finished my rewatch is that it avoided so many of the pitfalls romance dramas fall into 90% of the time.

The second leads? Neither of our leads gave them a second glance they were so into each other they barely caused 5 seconds of jealousy. The big secret or fight that will break them up towards the end? They said nah, we're gonna make each other even happier. The year or 2 separation? Nope, she got an opportunity for her career abroad and he said of course you should go and she answered yeah we're going together even before this I was working towards giving you a come back as an artist abroad. Just the amount of absolute tender consideration for each other's dreams and wants and needs and the work put into fulfilling those things; Unparalleled, especially Deok Mi, one of the best girlfriends of all time, only a girl like this would make me not care if she was a hardcore fangirl.

Thoughts on Her Private Life

I enjoyed this show so much I stalled on watching the last two episodes cause I didn't want it to end!! The show itself is quite fun and good, and I don't have any major complaints, but by far the best thing about it to me was the main couple's relationship.

I do have some opinions on how it portrayed fans and fangirling. I think they did a fairly good job of educating on the different aspects of that subculture without judging the people who participate all that much. And they showed the darker sides of things, the strong parasocial bonds as well. I honestly think the girls who assaulted Deokmi for supposedly dating Sian should have not been made sympathetic or given a redemption. I get they wanted to be wholesome and okay fine they redeemed Hyojin, but throwing stones and eggs at deokmi was really kind of unforgivable to me. It's important to acknowledge that it can go too far and also should get consequences from it!

But back to the main couple: I LOVED their relationship. I don't always enjoy fake dating, but I thought they did it fairly well in the show. The added confusion from Ryan believing Deokmi was a lesbian made it more fun (and honestly didn't expect the show to be an Ally) and when it became clear they were liking each other for real, the characters didn't act all too immature about it.

The actors had amazing chemistry, especially after they officially got together. That first kiss in the furniture store was easily the best first kiss I've ever seen in a kdrama, there was no open eyes or fish behavior, just two adults making out! They're in their 30s and are massively into each other, of course that's how they would kiss and they did! I was so happy to see it. The fact that they didn't let themselves get interrupted and instead he pulled her away to continue making out had me baffled and very pleased. In this they truly subverted the 'getting interrupted' trope, as well as in some other subtle ways throughout, which I enjoyed.

But then once they started dating, they were so casually physically affectionate they really felt like a real couple. There was no stiffness or awkwardness, they constantly hugged, held hands, gravitated towards each other. I fully believed they were a new couple in their honeymoon phase. Incredible stuff.

I also thought they had a very healthy dynamic. Once again, they're in their 30s, and the way they handled things was always very mature, taking care of each other, communicating well, slowly trusting and opening up to each other, and not taking out any negative emotions due to other things on the other. It was such a pleasant surprise. Ryan always smiles at Deokmi no matter what, and even when he's going through such intense shit let's her comfort him and be vulnerable in front of her. And vice versa!

I was also glad that the trauma in this show was confined to the childhood trauma of abandonment, and loss of a family member and not kidnapping or murder 😭 Though I think it's a little unnecessary for them to have that childhood connection. Having her mom be the abandoner from his memories and not her was a twist I didn't see coming though. Or that he was Sian brother lmao. And I'm glad we had scenes that emphasized the office part of the office romance.

Overall, I think there were some things that dragged but it was mostly a lighthearted and sweet show, which I love. Ryan and Deokmi were goals. The performances by the main actors were great. As a bisexual I can't decide who I wanna date more, Ryan or Deokmi. Iconic.

ranting on here about a kdrama ending cause I need to get it out

okay so I just finished watching Reborn Rich, and need to share my thoughts. spoilers ahead.

i. cannot. BELIEVE. we get a 'and it was all a dream' ending??? like yes ofcourse there were some loose ends to tie up but NOT BY INVALIDATING THE WHOLE SHOW???? what the fuck did we watch the previous 15 episodes for if none of that mattered. in the slightest. sure it helped our MC learn about the jin family but that's not enough, not even close. i think the loose ends could have been tied up with him still living as Jin Dojun.

the twist also comes out of absolutely nowhere??? and it makes no sense in-story. okay maybe I can believe seo minyoung following him to turkey for whatever reasons but there's one big problem with him coming back as hyeonwoo.

HE WAS SHOT IN THE HEAD AND DROPPED OF A CLIFF!!!!

how in the WORLD are we supposed to believe he survived??? and not just survived, survived WITHOUT A SCRATCH OR LONGTERM CONSEQUENCE AFTER ONLY A WEEK IN THE HOSPITAL???? i can suspend my disbelief to a great extent but not to this extent. I just can't. we're made to accept and believe his old life is completely over. how can he just pick up where he left off.

him being responsible for his own death was a fine reveal. it was interesting. but after confessing to the murder he doesn't have any repercussions??? he was an accessory to murder, after all. and he hid his involvement. for a decade. but no fine, no jail time, nothing??? he's just allowed to continue working at miracle???

but wait! him actually being responsible for his own death creates several loopholes. we know from the rest of the show and how he reacted to events that he didn't know anything about jin dojun. he didn't even remember his existence. if I had abetted a murder and covered it up, no matter how deep in denial, seeing the face of my victim in the mirror would certainly remind me. him only remembering it when he dies MAKES NO SENSE. ITS CLEARLY A BIG MOMENT IN HIS LIFE IF HE HAS A RECORDING HIDDEN AWAY!?

not to mention, he didn't take any steps to prevent it?? we know he's unafraid to use his foreknowledge to change things. and he does change things. if his first life and his second life are in the same timeline he wouldn't have conflicting memories of his mother's death. so how does he come back to an unchanged world, yet somehow the events of his rich life still happened? be fr.

What I thought the ending would be was him finally succeeding at taking over the company, and then affecting some real change in the way it's run, perhaps even propagating that change to improve the corruption in the country. he's clearly aware of it, and tried to fight it at a personal level when it comes to his poor parents. so is his caring about the common people just an act? him just going back to working for miracle, living his ordinary life but richer and not making any systemic changes didn't make sense to me.

a clear case of pinning systemic issues down as personal failures. the jin family was evil, so they lost in the end. but the conditions for them to exist and grow are still there. there will simply be another to take their place. I can't really call this ending happy, or inline with the story so far by any means.

I've not even addressed from a storytelling perspective how this ending makes the viewer feel cheated, but I've been through that with Mr. Queen and don't wanna rehash it.

also I have no thoughts on the romance ending the way it did. never thought they had great chemistry, it wasn't a big focus in the show, and I didn't really care. plus no matter how you spin it they have a huge age and power gap. so it was just whatever.

man. I was really enjoying the show up till ep 15. it was a satisfying revenge fantasy. And pulled off emotional moments and gave a little more depth to its villains than they needed to. it was interesting to watch. sigh. tried to look for fix it fics but they mostly revolve around the American ceo realising who the mc really is. not jin dojun not dying 🥲
