Final Artist Statement:
I honestly really enjoyed this class even though my art was slightly rushed. I learned some more principles of design and how to apply them. I learned how to upload photos properly to be more pleasing to the eye. I also learned I’m not THAT bad at using acrylic paints, I was just using the wrong paint before! While this class did make me miss using gouache I think I learned to work with the material a lot better than before. I definitely liked the Franz Kline projects A LOT because it really let me play with composition awhile allowing me to be my messy and gritty self. Even though acrylic paint was a challenge, I learned to work with colors I knew best rather than trying to overcomplicate most pieces too much. I think a huge challenge for me with keeping the paint moist enough to have it be workable, this type of paint really dries way too fast for my liking but I learned the hard way to keep dipping in the water (BUT NOT TOO MUCH). With that being said, I enjoyed the instructor, the class, and I think I am ready to start school full time again so I can graduate next year! It took a long time to be in the mindset to be ready for school but I’m looking forward to getting my degrees and to take the my knowledge and apply it to my current small business.

Artist statement
I chose to do “Oil Of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides” by SOPHIE for the album project. I decided to do this project because I hold it very near and dear to my art. I first listened to this when I was about 17 and at that point I had already had been a huge fan of her. This album perfectly encapsulates the experiences of a queer person, the joy, the sadness, the isolation, the community. My two favorite songs, “Immaterial” and “Is it cold in the water?” are on this album and honestly at times listening to this album makes me emotional. The artist who made this album unfortunately passed away due to an accident in her home just as her career was truly taken off and was getting its flowers from the mainstream. The artist was a trans woman so when approaching this project I wanted to find someway to honor her identity, as someone who is queer I can recognize we wouldn’t have rights if it weren’t for trans women trail blazing the LGBTQ+ advocacy movement. I decided I wanted to include the trans flag colors, initially I wanted to include the colors in the pearl itself, instead I opted to do it through the text and the background. Some challenges arose in this project, mainly trying to get that light iridescent color effect for the pearl, it often ended up grey and muddy so I opted to make an “oily” colored blue pearl as a nod to the title name. Another challenge was the lettering, as you can see it’s a bit off centered and the lines aren’t 100% clean, I also wish I had more time to make the lettering less opaque. Overall I’m happy with the result, I just wish it was more like the image in my head.

Artist Statement:
I chose “The Picture of Dorian Gray” because it was one of my favorites in high school, I love the subject matter surrounding it, a gullible handsome man, plagued by hedonistic tendencies and someone who enables them. An artist who is implicitly in love with the main character Dorian, paints a portrait of him, the artist is absolutely enamored by him, saying he can’t breathe or eat without him at some point! Dorian pays no mind to it at first, but something strange begins to happen. Throughout the years, he doesn’t seem to age, almost as if the painting froze him at the age he was portrayed. He goes YEARS without so much as a wrinkle. He notices that his portrait starts to age, this drives him mad and he KILLS the artist. Eventually he goes mad again after living a morally corrupt and hedonistic life and stabs the painting. He was later found, VERY aged with a knife through his heart, as if the painting revealed his true age once it was destroyed. This book tackles moral corruption, vanity and the desire to remain young so perfectly. I decided to do my best in capturing the dark nature of this book by using a lot of shadows and contrasts. I also wanted to make the portrait more menacing and horror inspired instead of directly using the books reference. I found it challenging because it was hard to add so much depth without it being over complicated and time consuming. I often found it hard to make dark colors look distinguishable from each other! I am happy with the result I also just wish I could have put more detail into the smaller portrait but I love how the skull came out. I am also pleasantly surprised by the lettering! I do wish I spaced it out differently but I would say it a a huge improvement to my attempts of typography in the past.

midterm!
Artist Statement:
I approached this project with some colors in mind and I went and tested it out in my sketchbook to see if it works. I tested out each potential four color combinations to be intentional about the harmony going into the piece. The reason I picked dark blue, dark red, yellow and purple was because I felt like I wanted to elevate the primaries, introduce them to their analogous and complimentary colors. Not only that but the preliminary works allowed me to test and she the balance of each composition before I permanently glued anything to the page. I enjoy the outcome but I wish some colors I picked were perhaps a bit more vibrant or bold. I also wish I was able to use more smooth rounded shapes for more variety. I feel the purple came out especially muted. I believe my understanding of different artist principles helped me make cohesive compositions that didn’t feel to lack luster or overwhelming to the eye. I was able to use variety, which is something I wanted to embody in each piece. Two are considered to be more orderly while the other two are more chaotic and sharp
