Soulmate ✰ Natasha Romanoff

A/N: Hey! So this is the first story I’ve written on this blog, although I have a fair few others at @imagine-the-100. Anyway, I hope you enjoy, this blog is just meant for fun and always feel free to send in a request and don’t be afraid to ask if you’re not sure what characters I write for. 

WARNINGS: None? Maybe Spoilers if you haven’t seen Endgame yet?

SUMMARY: Just a little sad thing because I miss Natasha x

Maybe life was just out to get you. Maybe it was fate to be cursed with love and have it stripped away, just when you thought life could be a little bit more than pain and heartache. Or maybe it could all be put down to bad luck. Whichever option, whether it was one you’d thought of or one you hadn’t, it didn’t matter. Nothing did.

Clint didn’t need to say anything, and he never had needed to. His face always conveyed every emotion he ever felt, even if it was just for a second, which is why Hawkeye being such an amazing agent blew you away. So, when all the Avengers appeared before your eyes with one missing member, with his lip quivering and his eyes glazed over, he didn’t need to tell you that she was gone. 

“Clint, where’s Nat?”

Bruce stood there waiting for an answer. Like it was needed, like the only person in your life who ever mattered was going to jump out from behind him and laugh. She had a beautiful laugh, one you refused to believe you’d never hear again. All Clint could do in reply was stare past Bruce, past Steve, past them all, and instead, he looked at you. He opened his mouth to speak, to apologise, before he shut it again and bowed his head, knowing no words were needed. That sometimes all you can do is hope that the other person knows what you feel without needing to say anything at all.

“Natasha”

“Yes?”

You felt her eyes searing through your soul, so you refused to look at her, instead choosing to fidget and watch yourself play with your hands. You deliberated on what to say next. Like any word or any combination of words could express how you felt.... how you felt about the red-head sitting beside you. 

It wasn’t a very romantic place. The Quinjet was great for going on and coming home from missions sure, but when it came to expressing how you felt for an Avenger... a hero, the vehicle could really use a touch-up or two.

“I’m glad you’re okay.” You looked at her as you spoke, a smile gracing your lips as you saw the content that seemed to roll off the Black Widow in waves at your voice. 

“When am I ever not okay gorgeous?” 

It was only because you knew she wasn’t fully okay that the term of endearment didn’t make you swoon. You could name plenty of times that Natasha Romanoff was far from okay because really, who would be when the world relies on them as much as the world has relied on her? But out of all the Avengers, Natasha never showed how much it bothered her. How much she needed a break. How much her past still haunted her. How much, despite who she is and who she’s meant to be, she would love nothing more than someone to understand, to listen and hold her when she needs it. 

You didn’t respond. Instead, with a hammering heart and a pounding head, you reached out a shaking hand and held hers. Neither of you spoke for the rest of the flight, but every now and then her grip would tighten and she’d look at you like you meant so much to her and you didn’t hesitate to do the same back, hoping that everything you wanted to say was somehow getting through to the most amazing person you’d ever met. 

Because if either of you had learnt something from being an Avenger it was that heroes don’t always get a happy ending, so make yourself as happy as you can before the ending arrives.

“I wish there was a way that I could let her know... that we did it... we won.” He smiled and held his hand for you to hold, and you took it, smiling softly back. Wanda was on your other side, glancing at you both before staring out at the lake in front of them. 

“She knows. They both do.” Despite the fact there was no way Natasha could know, you found comfort in Wanda’s words regardless. It gave you a bit of peace thinking that Natasha knew that it was over, that you were alive, that she was proud of you and she loved you. You couldn’t hold back the tears in your eyes, letting them fall freely down your cheeks to the grass below.

“She loved you.”

“I know.”

“Romanoff. What the hell are you doing?”

She froze, she knew she’d been caught. She slowly turned to face you, a small cheeky smile on her lips as you caught her eye.

“Nat. I’m serious. What are you up to? I don’t trust you near the pantry.” You made your way over to her, standing close enough in front of her to be able to smell the conditioner that she’d used in the shower with you the night before. Apparently, this comforted you more than you realised, as your eyes shut involuntarily, the air coming easier to your lungs as your girlfriend wrapped her arms around your neck. You opened your eyes, smiling at the woman who made your life impossibly better before leaning in for a kiss, the beauty meeting you halfway.

“You know I love you right.” You murmured against her lips, feeling a smirk grace her features. She pulled away, placing a hand on your cheek and letting her thumb stroke gently over the skin. 

“If you didn’t tell me twenty times a day I might have my doubts but luckily you’re always reminding me.” She teased. You knew she was making fun of you, accusing you of being completely whipped, which you definitely couldn’t argue with. But you knew she enjoyed your words, to know how you felt, and to know how much she meant to you.

Normally you’d make a smart ass comment back, tell her that she loves it and she’s a big softie. This time though, you just pulled her in for another kiss, and she happily obliged.

If it wasn’t for Sam coming into the kitchen and complaining about how there were none of your cookies left to steal, you might have even forgotten how this lovefest started.

“Natasha Romanoff. Did you seriously eat all my cookies?”

She was already sprinting down the hall, waving goodbye and blowing you a kiss.

Days, weeks, months, years. All went by. You lived your life as best as you could. You continued to be a part of ‘Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’, saving the world a couple of times...not that you were showing off of course. You retired after many years, only quitting because you could barely stay fighting for more than 30 seconds. You bought a farm, where you kept as many rescue dogs as you could. You gave every dog a home. A second chance. A chance at being loved by someone who knows what a difference it can make. 

You had a favourite, not that any of the others minded. A female Australian Kelpie by the name of Natasha. You’d spend hours patting her, telling her stories of your lost love and the dog would huff, leaning her head in your lap, looking up at you with her tail wagging slowly.

Nothing would ever replace the feeling of having your back pressed against the front of the Russian, as her arm would pull you closer and she’d kiss the back of your head before you both drifted off to sleep. But, considering she was gone, this was the next best thing and you hoped that she was somewhere out there waiting for you.
