You know I don't instantly hate Survival Unit looking at it. Sure it's got that usual Mobile game look but ultimately yeah I think it can fill that niche of 'I got 20 minutes at work waiting for a progress bar' and need a distraction. Plus if there's more puzzle solving like in the clip they showed and exploring an area is a mix of combat and puzzles I will be pleased enough with it. Of course this all hinges on 'please don't have the microtransactions absolutely suck ass'. Long as the free experience is good enough then cool. It gets one chance to prove itself.

All this talk of Leon probable for RE9 is cross pollinating the Outbreak canon in my mind and now I once again have buddy cop drama with Leon and Kevin in my head.

With Grace being a child of an outbreaker.... I have to wonder if Alyessa kept in touch with the others, I mean given her crusade (successful) against umbrella she must have kept in touch with Yoko. Yoko was my favorite outbreak character please let her roll up with a backpack of supplies at a critical moment to help.

chris has poor people skills - that's not bad writing

I know I already annoy everyone with my Chris takes [I'm really sorry!], so I decided to make a separate post instead of word vomiting over someone else's. This is again about the way Chris deals with Leon in Vendetta. This isn't about whether Chris' actions are sympathetic or not (YMMV depending on how much you identify with Leon or Chris and I've already written something on that), but about whether it's bad writing or not. RE doesn't always have the best writing, but I will maintain that Chris' is some of the most consistent in the series (and Chris acting the way he does in Vendetta is a persistent character blindspot of his). I think sometimes the fandom's preferred version of Chris tends to overshadow his canon characterization and then when he inevitably doesn't act like the idealized interpretation, it's considered bad writing. There was a lot of outcry after Village (and a little after Vendetta too) that Chris' actions were character assassination. It was my first RE game, so I took that at face value, but going back through the older games I more or less came to the conclusion that that's exactly what Chris would do. He's incredibly selfless, principled, and well intentioned, but he has abysmal interpersonal skills outside his "captain" persona.

Chris can be incredibly, let's be charitable and call it "curt" (but "tactless" might be closer to the truth 😅) when it comes to tending to the emotional needs of individuals during moments where he's dealing with what he perceives as a major threat. It's a consistent trait of his. You can pull moments like that from most games over the years to illustrate the point X D

ReMake: He's obviously trying his best with Rebecca (who is 18 and just lost her entire squad), but if you watch back their scenes, he's still incredibly mission focused, telling her he needs her to just push through. [Awkward pat on the should . Thumbs up] RE2R: Besides the whole "not telling his sister, and only family, he's off to fight evil pharmaceutical companies" thing, there's a voice line of Claire's along the lines of "Like Chris always says, show no mercy." I always thought it was incredibly telling that this is what Chris imparted to his teenage sister. It can be read as ruthless, but I think it's more the attitude an incredibly vulnerable young person without a support network would adopt; eliminate all threats first, then worry about everything else. It becomes kind of a theme with Chris. Re3 and Re3R: The OG is arguably worse because Jill's diary details how Chris won't talk to her, punches a colleague to get himself suspended(???) and only then tells her he's off to Europe, but even in the remake Chris leaves a clearly struggling Jill behind because taking down Umbrella takes precedent. (Chris logic is "if the [incredibly power institution] won't do it, I'll handle it myself." He genuinely just thinks everything is his responsibility - it's an interesting twist on Wesker's god complex.) Code Veronica and DSC: After being reunited with her brother, Claire is incredibly emotional. His response in DSC is "I thought tough girls like you didn't get worried?", and the exchange in CV is: "Chris promise, please promise that you won't leave me alone again." "I'm sorry Claire, but it's not over yet. There's still something we've got to do." Taking into account the threat Umbrella and Wesker pose, I get it, but Chris, sweetie, maybe some words of comfort for your only living relative who almost died trying to find you might be nice. Revelations: After Chris and Jill are reunited and go to fight the infected whale, a BSAA support helicopter gets taken down, Jill is worried about the pilot and Chris is just "Worry about her later!" The look Jill gives him is amazing.

Re5: This is really more post Re5 because Chris is clearly deeply concerned with saving Jill during the game, but (and I think there's another theme emerging) he's predominantly focused on her physical safety. Death Island seems to indicate that there is a bit of emotional distance between the two. Rebecca is the one who has to point out that Jill feels guilty, while Chris gave her a "we have to be responsible about how we sacrifice our lives for the cause" speech. Re6: This one is interesting because here Chris tries to deal with the "personal" and it's arguably worse than when he doesn't? He drops two massive emotional bombshells at the worst possible moment, and it ends in him almost getting shot by Jake and hitting all of Piers' insecurities which undoubtedly contributed to his decision to sacrifice himself. (Though even here, these personal confession were partially motivated by the greater good, securing Jake's blood for the vaccine and the BSAA's future leadership via Piers.) Not a Hero: There is a moment where Chris gets a remote bomb strapped to his wrist by Lucas. Veronica, his mission control suggests he should get if off before trying to rescue the missing soldiers. Chris responds by saying "there's no time for that". (He himself is included on the list of people he deprioritizes over the mission. I know the character model tends of overshadows the DLC's content, but Chris' characterization captures a lot of his more ??? character traits from over the years. It's genuinely delightful.) Village: I know this is post Vendetta, but it adds to the point that Vendetta wasn't OOC. I was going to go with Chris' very offended "You think I killed Mia!?!" in Heisenberg's factory and his entire interactions with Ethan, but there is an under-rated moment with Mia after he finds her in Miranda's lab. After he confirms she is indeed Mia, she's clearly distraught after getting kidnapped and experimented on. Chris tells her he's glad she's safe and then (understandably) promptly dismisses her to return to his Rose rescue mission and Mia is (understandably) in a state of WTF??? Sorry for the crappy quality, but I wanted to include some of the reactions to Chris going "no time for that - the world needs saving" The funniest thing is, he genuinely never thinks he needs to reconsider his priorities.

Now the point isn't that Chris is a terrible person, he's the opposite of that. He'd die for each and every one of the people above without having to think about it (and Mia is at the very least guilty of child trafficking). When he's confronting Leon in Vendetta it's pretty much how he deals with every other major crisis he feels responsible for. Show no mercy until the threat is gone. I think the fandom sometimes would prefer him to be more of a comforting teddy bear (and I think he'd be more popular if he was), but his characterization has always been deeply caring but emotionally unavailable, tunnel visioned, and relentless in pursuit of his targets. Personally I'm always glad they kept it that way.

I like to think Leon worked really hard as like a waiter to pay off his Jeep and he’s such a proud responsible boy. He worked so hard, got his dream job, paid off his car, has a home finally waiting for him in RC after years of being tossed around in the foster system and 25 years later he comes back and just stares at the wreckage of his dreams.

He still has no home since the government is constantly moving him around the country. His last five motorcycles were not paid off before some walking dead disaster smashed it against a building. And he hates his job.

Just him staring at the smoking wreckage of his happily ever after.

I think my favorite thing about Requiem getting announced is the payoff of seeing Articles written by Alyessa in 7 and 8. Love that there has been this quiet keeping alive of Outbreak's canonicity. Which means you know Grace being born to someone exposed to the Daylight vaccine is gonna be important.

The more people harp about graphics the more ungodly amounts of money you have to sink into a machine that can handle that shit without exploding and thus you cut off a chunk of your consumer base that just can't afford a machine your game won't detonate.

And they wonder why these insanely high production games don't sell as well as they think.
