2011 -> ryan nugent-hopkins is selected first overall by the oilers in the nhl draft, followed by gabe landeskog to the colorado avalanche. leading up to this it was a pretty big question regarding which of the two of them would go 1oa. landy was notably mic'd up for the draft and sitting really close to nuge, and when he was called first, landy got up and congratulated him before he went to the stage. fast-forward to the end of the season, when they're sitting a row apart at the nhl awards and they call landy's name for the calder, and you get the same moment in reverse

now this is already interesting because of the way each of them was discussed in the media before/after the draft and during the season. landy was already sort of stacked and played a heavy/physical game while nuge was (as was eternally discussed by everyone and their mother in edmonton media) skinny as fuck for a 1oa and played a (STILL VERY GOOD. HE IS VERY GOOD. MAKE SURE YOU PUT IN THE NEWSPAPER THAT HE IS VERY GOOD) game a lot more reliant on skill/hockey IQ than physicality; he was often called too 'fragile' for the NHL which only intensified when he ended up missing about two months of his rookie season from back-to-back shoulder injuries. both of them put up 52 points by the end of the 2011-12 season. landy won the calder and said in an interview that he thought nuge would have won it if not for his injuries (which is true looking at his point production); nuge, who lost by around 300 votes, said landy was just being humble and he'd heard it was a landslide

so: character foils in a sense, where nuge (as is the case with a lot of other smaller-but-high-skilled forwards) was the brunt of a lot of media criticism, and landy was the next big thing. this is kind of reflected in their media personalities also where you see nuge being rather quiet and straightforward for the most part (unless leon is there lmfao) and landy will joke with reporters (more so pre-captaincy). many interesting conversations to be had about traditional masculinity and how it leads to media perceptions and conversations within the nhl but you all know that already

they also both have taken leadership roles early in their careers (landy was the youngest-ever nhl captain at the time he was given the C) and are both foundational members of teams more famous for their bigger and younger stars (mcdavid/draisaitl, mackinnon/makar respectively). personally i think they would have made nuge captain by 2016 if not for the mcjesus of it all but i also wasn't there

i am always thinking about language and voices so i also find landy's total lack of a swedish accent (especially in the context of his whole highly physical good-canadian-boy play) rather intriguing as contrast to nuge's terminal case of pacific coast gayvoice*

as you can see this entire pairing is really based more in me being intrigued by their extremely different natures and perceptions etc than in any actual real life interaction but also there is this video of them sitting in a bed for indeterminable reasons and landy telling nuge he loves him in french. huberdeau is also there but this isn't about him. insert homoerotic fall out boy lyric about hotel rooms
