When you grieve, I am also sad. When you laugh, then I too feel joy. Don't you see the trees with bows joined? From different roots, the branches intertwine.-Songs of Zi Ye

House Aurelius of Vol Dorma
Marcon Aurelius the Elder The patriarch of the Aurelius house and a member of the Magisterium. An ambitious man of middling talent, he claws his way through life in the Imperium trying to further his name and the glory of his family, no matter the cost to those around him. This often puts him at odds with most of his children, who all have a tumultuous relationship with the man. Cerena Aurelius The eldest daughter of an extremely wealthy house with little political power, raised from birth to become the wife of a Magister with a strong magical bloodline. While considered up-jumped and aloof by most of her husband's peers, she still supports him the best she can while trying to keep her children safe and happy, something that is often a difficult task. Alaene Aurelius The second child of Marcon and Cerena Aurelius. Alaene often finds herself living in the shadow of her more successful older sister, Alaedra. Desperate to please her father despite her lack of magical talent, she throws herself into an unhappy but advantageous political marriage with a man who suffers from the same high ambition and middling talent. Alcinia Aurelius The third daughter of House Aurelius. While not nearly as contemptuous of their elder sister as Alaena, Alcinia thrives on causing discourse among the pair and often stakes the flames of Alaene's jealousy. She is supported in her endeavours by her ambitious husband, who is equally invested in bringing about the downfall of Alaene's husband. Marcon Aurelius the Younger The only son and only other member of House Aurelius who inherited the family's magic. The product of surprise birth later in life, Marton as he was called was both coddled by his mother and put under enormous pressure by his father. Terrified of the cut throat nature of the imperium power structure, Marton smuggled himself to the South of Thedas disguised as a traveling chantry brother, where he's been on the run ever since. Aedinia Aurelius The youngest member of House Aurelius, Aedinia is also the member of the family the least concerned with political power. A gentle and quiet woman, Aedinia married into a mercantile family known for their cultivation of various forms of flowers. Although her husband is older with children who are well grown, the pair have a loving respect for one another, leaving Aedinia to be the happiest of her siblings in many regards

Romancing Alae is actually really easy once you get past the ex that still lives in her house, the weird homoerotic thing she's got going on with her best friend, and the still being in love with the deceased father of her child.

For their vtm au: Arran is a Toreador, and it's painfully obvious from the moment you meet him. He owns a late night bookstore Alae is a Ventrue, and her partner [insert maea's dad's name because i can't figure out what i want it to be] was her ghoul and her lover who was murdered on the command of her sire. MAEA is said ghoul's daughter, who was a baby when her father died and so Alae decided to raise her

"I certainly didn't come to the ass end of Thedas because I missed the riveting company of your father," Alaedra replied with her best attempt at a laugh as she wiped the tears from Casira's cheeks, though it came out weak and halfhearted. She was trying her best to keep pity from her voice, knowing very well that her friend would refuse it.
But it was hard. So painfully, desperately hard. She had known Casira since their girlhood, the pair having grown up sharing all the weals and woes that their family life had gifted to them. Casira had been there when her own daughter was ripped from her breast, had held her head to her chest as grief tore through her and likewise, Alaedra had been there at the birth of Olivia. She had seen the joy on Casira's face when she held the babe in her arms for the first time, how the smile on her friend's face in that very moment had outshone the sun.
"And I did not come to fall for such a terrible lie. I knew how to spot yours since we were children," she said as she continued to cradle Casira's face in her hands even as tears threatened to spill down her own.
Tumblr media
Casira opened her mouth to reply - and nothing came out. A shiver ran through her like lightning, unrelated to the chill wind, as she shook her head and, quite unexpectedly, burst into tears.
She couldn't remember the last time she cried. Very likely it had been just after she gave birth to Olivia, the first time she'd held her daughter in her arms, kissed the crown of her perfect little head, looked into her big blue eyes and sworn to protect her from harm; if not then, it had been when Olivia's magic first manifested in a hurricane of power, with her five-year-old nightmares suddenly infested with demons.
Sworn to protect her. An oath that she had now, undoubtedly, miserably failed to uphold. The sight of her baby, shackled and terrified, would haunt her for the rest of her life. Nothing would wipe out that stain.
She drew a few juddering breaths, sucking down icy air in hopes it would freeze the fear welling in her chest; if she didn't stop crying now, she never would. Hands curled into fists as she forced herself to still.
"I am fine," she lied. Another deep breath. "Angry. Scared out of my mind. But that is nothing new, I once raised a toddler on my own." The image of Olivia, three years old and sweet as pie, rose to her mind and threatened a fresh wave of tears. "Did you come all this way for me, dear heart?"
