Dough Loco

Dough Loco is a tiny donut shop on the Upper East side, just a few blocks away from Central Park. This is the first donut shop we’ve stated that gives Dough a run for its money. The donuts come in a variety of unique flavors including blood orange, lychee ginger and guava honey lemon to name a few.
Leslie’s Rating: 4 out of 5 Dough Donuts
Close but not cigar. I had had the blueberry donut and it gets points for being better than Elsie’s. It also gets points for the dough closely resembling Dough, however I literally got bored of eating it. It should never be hard to finish a donut.
Megan’s Rating: 5 out of 5 Dough Donuts
I had the maple donut. It was delicious! The dough base is thick and fluffy - very similar to Dough’s. The maple frosting was on point and reminded me of buttery pancakes topped with maple syrup.

DK’s Donuts

DK’s Donuts is the officially home to the world’s first Ube Donut (made of Yam) and has a plethora of other intriguing concoctions, including savory donut breakfast sandwiches.
Megan’s Rating: 3 out of 5 Dough Donuts
I had the ube cake donut which was underwhelming. The purple color is cool, but it tasted like a regular cake donut. Not bad, just nothing new. I also had the Girl Scout Samoa donut which was pretty tasty, just like the cookie.

Moe’s Doughs Donut Shop
Moe’s Doughs is a newcomer to the donut game and sparked a bit of a rivalry when it opened up a just a few blocks from Peter Pan. It is owned by a former Peter Pan employee and offers many of the same options also for $1.10.

Leslie’s Rating: 3 out 5
I was sort of underwhelmed by the options, but again that could’ve just been because we were eating them on a Saturday afternoon. This time I went for a maple donut since I normally like those, however there was something off about this one. Maybe it’s because it was round and I’m used to maple bars but it tasted just a little to artificially maple for my taste.
Megan’s Rating: 3.5 out of 5
This place had exactly all the same donuts as Peter Pan. To do a true comparison, I would have had to eat another honey cruller, but I really needed something gooey so I went for a Boston Cream donut. It was probably the best Boston Cream donut I’ve ever had. The cream tasted just like vanilla pudding. However, I’m only giving this place 3.5 stars because it felt like a ripoff of Peter Pan.

Peter Pan Donuts and Pastry Shop

Peter Pan is a cute little donut shop in Greenpoint that has been around since the 1950s. It used to be the only donut game in Greenpoint until Moe’s opened up nearby. (More on that next week). The shop offers old fashioned donuts for only $1.10 a piece.
Leslie’s Rating: 4 out of 5 Dough donuts
Maybe it’s because we went on a Saturday afternoon, but some of the best sounding flavors like a cruller drizzled in chocolate were already sold out. I opted for the old fashioned powdered cruller, which was quite delicious. It had a nice fried outside with a moist center.
Also there were some people enjoying ice cream donut sandwiches that looked amazing.
Megan’s Rating: 4 out of 5 Dough donuts
I loved the old fashion vibe inside. I also liked my donut! I, like Leslie, wanted the chocolate drizzled cruller but it was sold out, so I went for the honey cruller. It was good, with a nice and light taste but I missed the chocolate frosting for sure.

Rockville Market Farm

Get your veggies and your donut fix with this butternut squash donut. Rockville Market Farm brings these tasty treats to Brooklyn’s Smorgasburg, which you can enjoy with their maple syrup lemonade while standing in the other food lines.
Leslie’s Ranking: 4 out of 5 Dough Donuts
This donut makes a very good case for disguising all veggies as donuts. I’ve always enjoyed eating my zucchini in bread and now I can get my squash serving in a donut.

Charlie's Donut Truck

Charlie’s Donuts are the talk of the town in Alys Beach, Florida. They open early and sell out early. I first visited at 10:30 am and the truck was already sold out! But the staff was nice enough to give me a few coupons for some free donuts. So the next day I tried a little earlier at 7:30 am, and I scored with a full truck of donuts.
They have all your standard flavors plus a few special ones like maple bacon and red velvet. Compared to NYC prices, these donuts are a steal. The most expensive donut was only $1.60.
Megan’s ranking: 3 out of 5 Dough Donuts
I had a chocolate donut with sprinkles, a bear claw and a lemon filled. All were good, lots of dough with a traditional taste. The stuffed donuts outperformed the sprinkled- hands down. A great little beach shop.

Carpe Donut

Donut Truck + Ice Cream Sandwich = Carpe Donut
Carpe Donut is a mobile donuttery specializing in apple cider ice cream donut sandwiches. Follow @CarpeDonutNYC to catch the truck when it’s near you.
Leslie’s ranking: 3 out of 5 Dough Donuts
So while I did greatly enjoy this donut ice cream sandwich I can’t quite give it 4 Dough Donuts because you really only have to want an apple cider ice cream donut sandwich to be satisfied. But I do recommend this treat for getting two of my favorite things in one sweet treat on a summer day.
Megan’s ranking: 4 out of 5 Dough Donuts
I loved this! The apple cider donut was very yummy and adding in the ice cream only made it better. My only con was that the ice cream melted way too fast.

Dough

Well if our rating system wasn’t a giveaway, we love Dough. The ratio of dough to frosting/filling is spot on and although we have our favorites you can’t have a bad donut at Dough. You can find Dough in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and at food markets on the weekend. First timer? We recommend the cafe au lait.
Leslie’s ranking: 5 out of 5 Dough Donuts
Just thinking about Dough starts to make me salivate and I can enjoy it anytime of day. After sampling many of the flavors I can say I enjoy the cafe au lait, the chocolate with cocoa nibbs, the Nutella filled...the whole menu?
Megan’s ranking: 5 out of 5 Dough Donuts
For today’s tasting I sampled the ever-photogenic hibiscus donut and a classic cafe au lait. Basically nothing can be the cafe au lait donut. It’s the perfect combination of cinnamon sugar and maple frosting. I could eat these donuts for days.

Elsie’s Doughnuts

Elsie’s Doughnuts is a cute new walk-up window in Crown Heights, where you can get your quick donut fix.
For today’s tasting menu, Leslie selected the dark chocolate, salted caramel with almonds donut and a blueberry with graham cracker crumble donut.
What’s the verdict?
They’re good! But no Dough.
Leslie’s ranking: 3 out 5 Dough Donuts
For me, the blueberry donut wins. It a nice hint of blueberry frosting that makes you feel like this donut is healthy! And while normally a chocolate donut would normally be my clear winner I didn’t seem to notice the chocolate or the salted caramel much. It was more of a dough with sometimes almond donut.
Megan’s ranking: 3 out 5 Dough Donuts
I liked these donuts, but I wanted more from this up-and-coming shop. I appreciated the donut’s pretty colors but wanted them to taste as good as they look. Between the chocolate and the blueberry, I’d say the blueberry won for its tangy flavor.
