deathmaycome:
Technology wasn’t really May’s wheelhouse. She hated gadgets. She knew a bit about coding, used social media more than the average 39 year old, read articles, and did the occasional deep dive into internet forums in the hope of dredging up some information on the people she wrote about, but all her activity was out of necessity more than it was a genuine interest. If she weren’t a journalist or involved with Death, she would probably barely use the internet at all. It limited her understanding of what people like Enzo did, but not her appreciation. Her eyes followed his every movement, somehow both scattered and completely deliberate, as explained what he was doing.
She laughed quietly, the sound getting stuck in the air between them as the room was too full to echo it back to her. “Don’t you worry, Jack is under strict instructions not to press the button until I text him that we’re out.” A quick check of her phone, half-smiling at a couple of stupid notifications from the Death group chat, before confirming the time. “Uriel does want this to go off at exactly 3am, though, so we have about ten minutes.” Shifting from her uncomfortable crouch to a sitting position, knees tucked against her chest, she nodded at his assertions, a smile forming that mirrored his own. “That’s the plan. Leaked nudes never did anyone any good. Leaked medications? That might actually help some people. And of course, completely fuck Pest over, which is an added bonus.”

It was slightly strange to see Enzo so absorbed - she had become accustomed to him as a parallel of Vince, similarly chaotic and just as loud. May didn’t need any reassurance that saving Enzo from Pestilence all those months previously had been the right decision, but seeing him then, laser-focused on his task and entirely determined, instilled her with a sense of pride. Not in herself, but in him. He had come a long from being a boy cowering in an alley who needed saving. For all the potentially questionable things that Death did, this, turning the victims into the empowered, had to be something good. “How are you doing? I don’t mean with this,” she waves at the screen, vaguely dismissive. “You. How are you? First big job, right?”
-
“Phew,“ he made a wiping gesture over his forehead and shot a half smile at the screen while the operation was loading its last ten percent. The Angel was sure Uriel wouldn’t blow up his own pawns, but the thought of exploding to pieces as he did his biggest job ever was very anti-climactic. May’s thoughts brought forward the first reason why Enzo accepted this ‘fight fire with fire’ mindset that Death seemed to apply, no matter how brutal - in its core, they wanted to make the world a better place instead of give into the greed for cash, wealth and power. Heavy were the crowns of the mafia beasts and Death was here to relief them of their burden.
May’s caring questions reached Enzo with a level of warmth, one that he was still learning to accept. A lone wolf got used to being part of a pack with time and slowly, he was starting to trust his new family. “It’s mental, to be fucking honest,“ the hacker clicked a button and as the program reached a hundred percent he pulled the flash drive with Pestilence’s medicine data and fiddled with it, weaving it in-between his fingers nimbly. “I mean, I got to take my sweet revenge, right?“ his head cocked to one side as he watched the computer overclock much more than it was built for and eventually shutting down the entire data servers and with it - the lights of the room May and Enzo were situated in. “Kinda, at least. But, truth be told, none of my heists or hacking jobs required that amount of prep nor focus, but the thrill of it, sheesh,” Shivers ran down his body as he remembered the amount of work he’d put into the job the weeks prior and seeing it work its magic on the spot. The hacker pulled a small flashlight and suggested their escape.
“How does Uriel even come up with these masterplans? It’s a fucking hassle, isn’t it? I mean, don’t get me wrong, they’re... genius, but-“ Enzo held the flashlight in between his teeth as he opened the massive data servers doors with both his hands, quickly retrieving it back after, “He really isn’t afraid to make a statement, huh? We stan a fearless horseman.”
