The all-female Afghan Robotics Team, which has won international awards for its robots, started work in March on an open-source, low-cost ventilator as the coronavirus pandemic hit the war-torn nation. It took the team almost four months to finalise the ventilator, which can run on battery power for 10 hours, and costs roughly $700 to produce, compared with the $20,000 price of a traditional ventilator. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist.” -Hélder Câmara Hélder Câmara (1909 – 1999) was a Brazilian Catholic Archbishop from 1964 to 1985, during the military regime of the country. Câmara was an advocate of liberation theology, and devoted his efforts to assisting the urban poor. "With this year's award, the [Committee] wishes to turn the eyes of the world to the millions of people who suffer from or face the threat of hunger," said Norwegian Nobel Committee chairwoman Berit Reiss-Andersen. "The World Food Programme plays a key role in multilateral cooperation in making food security an instrument of peace." The WFP estimates it helps about 97 million people a year, in 88 countries. #wfp #nobelpeaceprize #nobelprize (at Helsinki) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGHkPLQnGGy/?igshid=6q4g1fjx2prn

The swap comes ahead of the UN's Day of the Girl, and is part of a global campaignby Plan International. It is the fourth year Finland has taken part in the campaign, which allows teenagers from countries from across the globe to step into the shoes of leaders in politics and other sectors for a day.  "It is a pleasure to be speaking here before you today - although, in a way, I wish that I did not have to stand here, that campaigns like the Girls' Takeover were no longer necessary," Miss Aava Murto said in a speech on Wednesday.  "However, the truth is that we have not yet achieved gender equality - not anywhere on earth. Although we have accomplished a great lot of good in this area, there is still much work that needs to be done. More than 50 women have accused Ebola aid workers from the World Health Organization and leading NGOs of sexual exploitation and abuse in the Democratic Republic of Congo, an investigation by The New Humanitarian and the Thomson Reuters Foundation has revealed. The abuse and exploitation took place between 2018 and 2020, and the victims worked mostly as cooks, cleaners, and community outreach workers in several aid agencies active in eastern part of DR Congo. The women reported that they were drugged with drinks, ambushed in offices and hospitals and locked in rooms by men they identified as aid workers. Some of the victims were propmised a job offer in exchange for a sexual favor, while the ones with a job contract were threatened to be sacked if they were unwilling to offer sexual favour in return. Although the women did not know all of the men’s nationalities, they said some came from Belgium, France, Canada, Côte d’Ivoire, and Guinea. In a rare victory for women’s rights in Afghanistan, mothers’ names will be permitted to be included on their children’s birth certificates. The Afghan government accepted a proposal for the inclusion of both parents’ names on birth certificates earlier this month, after a long campaign by women’s rights activists. #afghanistan #genderequality Photo: RT (at Kabul, Afghanistan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFmMSBqHjDw/?igshid=1podeszymymnn

The polio virus, which once killed or disabled hundreds of thousands of children every year and led to summertime lockdowns, is disappearing. With no recorded cases since 2016, Africa has been declared “polio virus free” by the World Health Organization (WHO). This is, undoubtedly, a great achievement in public health history of the continent. #polio #africa #publichealth #goodnews #globaldevelopment (at Helsinki) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEWhUUrnYG-/?igshid=1evubvp6ac98z

Last year, a supermarket in Thailand came up with a genius way to reduce plastic packaging: wrap its produce in banana leaves. Many other supermarkets adopted the practice and the trend has continued since then. Isn’t this simply awesome? (at Helsinki) https://www.instagram.com/p/CELfzuvHro7/?igshid=1ieh3t5tf0h9f

“Most of these masks contain or are made of polypropylene, which does not break down quickly. Marine plastic pollution is a serious problem. It is estimated that every year, over eight million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans. This plastic does not disappear but rather slowly breaks down into micro-plastic, which enters food chains, with devastating effect,” says Teale Phelps Bondaroff, Director of Research at OceansAsia. “Estimates suggest that more than 100,000 marine mammals and turtles and over a million sea birds are killed by marine plastic annually. Marine plastic adsorbs toxins, which results in it poisoning animals that accidentally ingest it.” (at Helsinki) https://www.instagram.com/p/CD-56Bqnw7p/?igshid=1og2ywqaqfhw5
