Rachael described her choice of colours in the work as being “…intuitive…without too much reasoning…” and yet they still adhere to the strict systems she implements. For instance, in Newcastle OS #2, (2011) (being worked on above) she developed a two-colour system; every point on her map that she visited was defined by a circle, the size of which was determined by how long it took her to travel to that point. These, in turn, were composed of an outer and an inner circle (of contrasting colours) for all the locations beginning with the letters A to L blues and greens compose the inner circle and yellows/oranges the outer. For locations beginning with the letters M to Z, this reversed. This excessively complex, almost indecipherable system of signs is only hinted at in her key on the left hand side of the painting.
“Although these charts and diagrams look quite serious and informative… without explanation they are actually unreadable…”

This is Archive for Change, an interactive project by artists and filmmakers Taryn Edmonds, Laura Maragoudaki and Julie Ballands. The project uses documentary clips as well as pamphlets and records to detail the process of regeneration that has taken place in Newcastle’s Inner West End, charting a course through the 20th century and the changing urban space.
