Fun Facts About the Piano Painting Project:

-The piano features 3 wildflowers the CA, WA, and OR state flowers because each set of grandparents live in each state. The Oregon Grape flowered is featured on the back of the piano surrounding the "mural within. Mural," as I like to call it - the scene of Crater Lake inside the Oregon State outline.

-"Pop" painted the California Poppies - pun intended.

- We painted flower Petals on the piano and we also painted the piano pedals so now this piano has both pedals and petals on it!

- This piano was painted by my immediate family members ages 2 to 63

.

- The piano is dedicated to my mom who wrote a short story one week before she suffered from a brain aneurysm, had life saving brain surgery and a stroke. In her short story the family reunites and dances in the field of Wildflowers. This Field of Wildflowers is what inspired the name and design of the piano.

- The piano had a beautiful copper front piece that had vines and flowers on it already that we painted to incorporate into our original design.

- We painted the piano during a record heat wave that will probably be remembered for years to come.

-This was my first public mural but it won't be my last! The new area we are moving to has opportunity for many murals and I've also applied to be in a be a public artist in WA. I'm excited to share my art with the world as I feel it is truly healing and calming to the spirit.

For younger babies we liked the Comotomo Bottle or Medela Bottle (especially if you have a Medela breastpump that the bottles are compatible with BUT we did have a few that got warped out of shape over many uses and washes).

Painting A Mural Is Hard & Healing Work!

In the beginning of this project I had so much energy and expectation. As the days have turned into weeks my enthusiasm and energy is wearing thin. Not only is it taking a long time, we are experiencing an unexpected extreme heat wave which is complicating our time painting and keeping us from painting during the hottest hours of the day.

A few other HARD things that we've encountered in this process:

Transferring my design on the tablet to my design on the piano.

Running out of yellow paint because we used so much in the greens. Then we had to go buy more for our yellow flowers.

Yellow is a primary color and you can't make yellow! Orange with white makes peach not yellow - we all know this but mixing your own paint really solidifies your understanding of colors.

Spilling all your white paint when you are packing up.

Sunburns and dehydration in the heat.

Painting a mural is HEALING work!

A few other HEALING things that we've encountered in this process:

Time with family after a long year apart because of COVID.

My mom who suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) just 2.5 months ago was able to join us in painting the piano. My piano is dedicated to her and it is so amazing that she painted some of the flowers on this piano.

My sister suffered a great loss in her life and painting this piano has brought us all together and give us time to create while having extended time to talk about the big questions in life.

As the tourists, locals and those passing through stop to admire the piano healing conversations happen as I share the story of my mom's recovery and our family involvement in the painting of the piano.

Day 5: Pedals & Petals

Today we had some miscommunication about what I had painted.

What I Said:

"I finished painting the peddles today!"

What they heard:

"I finished painting the petals today."

You see, on this piano there are now pedals AND petals that both need painting.

Pedal: Noun; Each of a set of two or three levers on a piano, particularly (also sustaining pedal ) one that, when depressed by the foot, prevents the dampers from stopping the sound when the keys are released. The second is the soft pedal ; a third, if present, produces either selective sustaining or complete muffling of the tone.

Petal: Noun; Each of the segments of the corolla of a flower, which are modified leaves and are typically colored.

Today I indeed painted the pedals and sprayed them with a nice clear coat. I did this because I anticipate many dirty feet will be pushing these pedals throughout the summer and I didn't want the paint to peel off!

Day 5: Painting Oregon

Today we started the long journey of painting the focal point of the piano - the back of the piano! this shape and outline are of the great Oregon State. the inside of the state will be filled with a cartoon-like painting of Crater lake with two oversized Oregon Grape flowers on either side.

Day 3: Family Paint By Number

Today everyone in the family got to painting. Me, my husband, my daughter, my sister and nephew all joined in to paint the flower petals.

Each section of the piano is a different shade of 💚 green 💚! Green was the color of our wedding, green is the color of nature and both our daughters have green in their names. The real symbolism in the design is the fact that EVERY SHADE OF SKIN COLOR IS BEAUTIFUL, IMPORTANT AND NEEDED!

DAY 2: Leaves & Poppies

Day 2 of painting the piano for the Klamath Falls Piano Project is in the books! Today we painted more base coat green on different sections on the piano then I taped more sections to be painted later by different family members. This is a FAMILY effort. The piano design is dedicated to and inspired by my mom. Myself, my 2 year old daughter, my husband, sister, nephew and mom have all painted on this piano and it is going to be stunning! We also started adding different shades of green leaves and some golden/orange color for our CALIFORNIA poppies!

Fun Fact:

The 3 flowers featured on our, "Field of Wildflowers" piano are the state flowers for the states that my children's 3 sets of grandparents live! The California Poppy, the Oregon Grape Flower and the Washington Rhododendron.

ABOUT the PIANO:

This piano is a beautiful and large upright piano. It was painted white by its previous owners at a local church who ended up donating the piano to the Klamath Falls Piano Project. The low notes are rich and thunderous but the notes do tend to blend together, whereas the high end are clear and full of character. This piano will live under the shade of a few trees by the water for the rest of the summer and I believe it will be a great addition to the park!
