cleaned garlic update! these were curing in the garage and i finally got around to cleaning them. i don't bother to braid, i like to hang them in a net bag.
these are softneck Nootka Rose. for whatever reason the pink color didn't appear on them, i couldn't say why since the cloves i planted looked good enough. it's supposed to be good for storing and it has a nice strong flavor. i might try to find another variety to plant with it next year and compare.

Well.... it's tomato season now. I'm still waiting on the san marzanos mostly so i can make and can some sauce. but the mortgage lifter and pink berkley are going off.
the berkley is surprisingly delicious! tomatoes aren't my most favorite tbh but these are really worthwhile for fresh eating. they're a little acidic, less sweet, dense and slightly crisp, not at all mealy or watery. a good, dark tomato flavor. by comparison the mortgage lifters are meaty compared to other large beefsteak type tomatoes, but mild and a bit flavorless. i might can them but i don't think i'd grow them again.
#alas these are all growing mixed together so i won't save the seeds this year#i'm not at home enough to hand-pollinate either#gardening#tomatoes

feeling spiritually unfulfilled because my garden isn't large enough to grow all the vegetables and grain crops and fruit trees i need to be constantly surrounded by plants to tend and eat and pickle and give away or i'm wasting my life

it surprises me every year but it's still amazing to me how everything goes off in the garden at midsummer. the tomato plants that seemed hardly changed for a month are suddenly three feet high and full of flowers and that green glandular smell. flower bushes have burst forth. the grass won't give me a break from mowing. it was like this when i had corn too; slow painful inching growth until the week it grows twice as high every night. summer sneaks around the corner and hits you with everything it's got.
