I think the reason Mydei’s death hit so hard for Phainon (aside from the fact that’s he’s in love with him) is that Mydei is the one person Phainon wasn’t prepared to say goodbye to.

Phainon has lost a lot in his life, and surely he knew that his fellow Chrysos Heirs could die during the Flame Chase. But Mydei? Mydei couldn’t die. And that must have been such a nice change of pace. When Mydei left, Phainon expected them to meet again some day. Even if they were apart, Mydei was the one person Phainon would never truly lose.

Until he wasn’t.

Mydei, jewellery, and time frames

Have we talked about mydei's jewellery yet? Because I want to

I am armed with two thirds of a classics degree, functioning eyeballs, a massive database of ancient jewellery, and a big fat crush on Mydei, let's do this.

First and foremost, his earrings!

His earring from the 3.1 artwork is insanely historically accurate, and very similar to these two examples from the Bronze Age and the Archaic period, respectively;

The second earring is more stylized, but I can see what they were going for with the design. It is similar to the below examples from the Hellenistic period;

Whether intentionally or not, hoyo have represented two vastly different eras of jewellery in mydei's earrings. Perhaps this symbolises time passing, but that's probably a reach considering the massive time span that would imply (at least a rough ~1500 years, if counting from 2000-300 bce).

What about his necklace?

His necklace is also very historically accurate! We have multiple example of similar necklaces throughout Greek history, like these two;

There is also this example from the 5th century BCE, but it's not as similar as the previous two. I'll include it anywa;

While it seems from the 3.1 art that Mydei might've had another necklace first, he is depicted with his current necklace in the A Trail of Bygone Blood light cone, so I'm just assuming it was simplified for the sake of the artwork.

His necklace most closely resembles the late Bronze Age examples, which are from roughly the same time period as the first set of earrings.

I know, I know. What about the signet ring?

Well, that also has some similarities to real-life examples!

While the concept of a "signet ring" may not have been super common, there are certainly rings of a similar shape and material. Most of these have mythological or every day motives, as opposed to symbols, but there are examples of symbols too!

These rings are from the classical and hellenistic periods, which puts them in roughly the same time frame as the second set of earrings, and the third necklace. Given that Mydei's ring is from Gorgo, it should be much older than his necklace and earrings.

In summary, Mydei is depicted with jewellery from a bunch of different time periods, namely the Bronze Age, Archaic period, Classical period, and the Hellenistic period. While there is a clear chronological difference between his first and second earring, there simply isn't enough support for a connection between his jewllery and the passage of time within Amphoreus, given that the ring, which should be older, bears similarities to rings from a much later period.

So, all in all, there isn't really any connection between Mydei's jewellery and the passage of time, but damn it if he doesn't look cool anyway.
