Started my S5 rewatch and this time around it's really jumping out at me why Cas became a breakout hit of a character. S5 is a valley of despair and you can really feel how alone Sam and Dean are. They have Bobby, and Bobby's having a rough time of it at the start of S5, Dean's losing hope after Sam damaged the trust between them, Sam's miserable because he feels bad for his choices in S4 and for alienating Dean, the brothers are up against impossible odds. And when they need him most, Cas pops in, is the most badass in the joint, watches after the boys, gets down into the fight with them, with all of Heaven hunting him, and Misha has this presence and Cas is uncanny, BAMF, and awkward all at once, Misha and Jensen have electrifying chemistry. And Cas is a flare in the darkness of S5.

What's making me feel even more feral is knowing now after the fact that just a season later, the new showrunning team decided they wanted to remove Cas from the show for good. It's like Cas was too flashy. He got too popular, was too loved, it was too distracting, the character's rise was too fast, and Dean and Cas had their *thing* whatever it was accidentally going on in terms of creative intention at that point, and it made a relationship other than the brothers that was inviting attention and it really is odd after Cas in S5, to make someone a regular and the character is working like gangbusters, and then you have a creative team change and immediately...oh they have to get rid of that. One of those deranged behind the scenes spn things that adds an extra kick to the sauce when you know about it.

spn scripts make me sick bc wdym dean was supposed to say "i love you" in the crypt scene??? wdym cas was supposed to go to his own personal heaven that was full of pictures of dean?? wdym dean spread cas' ashes in a field by a windmill bc he thought cas would have liked it?? wdym dean was supposed to tell cas "i wanted you to stay" in his purgatory prayer?? wdym that while dean was worrying about them dying cas was thinking about how beautiful dean was??? wdym sam was supposed to mention cas while dean was dying???? i am physically unwell.
