Alright, I think I like tumblr now.

A pun post crossed my dash, and I reblogged it with an equally bad pun in return. A couple of my followers find it funny, it's a good day for everyone.

That was on July 7th.

Virality on Reddit was entirely algorithmic. You could garner a couple crossposts, but the success of a post was entirely dependent on whether or not it hit r/all--the main page of Reddit. If your post does that, it's immediately exposed to 10x the number of people and immediately gets upvoted.

On my pun post, I get a couple reblogs. And those reblogs get a couple reblogs--nobody really adds any content to the post, it just gets a couple reblogs here and there.

There's a specific chain of reblogs that I'd like to focus on. The most popular post on this chain has about 25 reblogs on it. Half the posts have three reblogs or fewer. Five posts in this chain have just one reblog total.

But the reblog chain keeps going. And going. It breaches containment many times over. And finally, after a chain THIRTY SIX posts long, at 9:30 AM, July 22nd this morning, it hits a popular account.

99% percent of the people who have seen the post--virtually unchanged from how it left my dash--have seen it because it was curated by 36 different people. That's insane to me.

None of those 36 people know that they're part of this chain. They saw a post, reblogged it, and moved on. If any one of these people had not reblogged, the post would have a fraction of the impact it has.

And yet, after two weeks, the post has effectively hit the main page of tumblr. It was picked up, only because people liked it enough to show it to their followers. There were no algorithms necessary.

You really, truly, cannot get this on any other website.

Beyond the Wall

The lands beyond the wall are mesmerising: the rolling hills and lush forests stretch on until the edge of the horizon, where they fade into the glimmer of a distant river or a lake. Birds soar over it all with the freedom of the wind.

And yet, Ambrosius is scared. His imagination fills the woods with shadows and eyes and teeth, and he hears a dragon's shriek in the eagles' cries.

He takes a fortifying breath and looks at his companion. Bal is scanning the landscape with awe, and grief, and a small spark of hope that must mean he's also thinking of glinting eyes and sharp fangs.

Ambrosius closes his eyes, grits his teeth, and allows the guilt to wash over him.

When he looks up again, the glittering landscape remains: a bright unknown spanning a distance far beyond what the eye can see.

He reaches out for Bal's hand.

"Ready?" he asks.

Bal takes a moment to focus on him, as though he had to drag his spirit back from a distance as great as where the land meets the sky.

"Yeah. I'm ready."

Scary as it might be, the future before them promises adventure, not a threat.

Bal is a deer-centaur in the magical creatures Au, so why not make Percy a snake-centaur (pretty sure they have an actual name but I'm not aware of it-)

I have no idea when I'll finish this actually-

But I wanted to get the idea out of my system :p

Tells the author someone liked the thing they made.

Bumps the total number of comments up WHICH MEANS more people will read the fic WHICH MEANS the author will get even MORE serotonin WHICH MEANS the author will be more inclined to WRITE MORE.

Make you feel good for creating a positive interaction for a stranger on the internet who might be going through a tough time, which you also might be going through.

I cannot stress enough, you don't have to create a gorgeous flowery comment, it's enough to drop an emoji or just say "LOVE".

The number of folx I talk to who get discouraged and stop writing because they think no one cares is not small and it is super disheartening.

And we, as readers, CAN SUPPORT THEM. We, as people, can do a small, good thing, for other people.

So, in conclusion:

Ballister and Ambrosius explore a place where beings like Nimona habit in beyond the kingdom’s walls by lounging near a willow tree in the night sky. Ballister couldn’t help, but be in awe to Ambrosius’ happiness when trying a pastry made in the shifter village. There also appears to be a surprise visitor that the two wouldn’t expect to see.
